Shining Force: The Legacy of the Great Intention was released on the SEGA Genesis in 1993 and is one of SEGA’s most beloved RPG franchises.
Its turn-based strategy gameplay and anime-inspired battle cinematics carved out an identity for the franchise that was all its own.
We played through Shining Force last month in our Game of the Month Club and enjoyed sharing our experiences with the SEGA Nerds community.

This review is a very accurate assessment of the game. Good Job
We’re glad you enjoyed it.
I thought Ecco was the game of the month?
Yeah, Ecco is, but we reviewed Shining Force because it was our Game of the Month for April. We’ll do the same for Ecco once we’re at the end of May.
Also, that’d be me as the narrator of this review.
Well that warrants another viewing!
So question:
When did you first play Shinning Force. If the plot isn’t strong I feel I am too old to get into this franchise.
Comment:
I am surprised that you made analogies towards more commercial RPG franchises (all that I haven’t played) and didn’t compare the game to Phantasy Star.
I first played Shining Force a few years ago now. I think the first time I played through the game was back in High School when I was supposed to be studying.
There isn’t a lot of Phantasy Star in here. The gameplay is more akin to something like Fire Emblem which is a competing strategy RPG.
