SEGA is open to helping third parties develop 3D remakes of releases from SEGA’s classic consoles

For SEGA fans, the month of April saw the release of the SEGA 3D classics collection, a cornucopia of SEGA classics that pop out of your Nintendo 3DS. In a recent interview with Gamastura, SEGA said that they were open to the idea of helping other companies release 3D classics that came out on any of SEGA’s classic consoles.

Okunari says that Sega is open to helping other companies who’ve had successful releases on Sega’s classic consoles to do 3D remakes of their games.

“During the Wii Virtual Console days, we worked with other developers and were able to port games that were on Megadrive and other Sega systems,” says Okunari. “Those were all made on our side. However, negotiations with some publishers, like Capcom and Bandai-Namco, didn’t go through. We did consider negotiating again when the 3DS came along, but business-wise, nothing really came together.”

It’s unfortunate that SEGA and companies like Capcom and Bandai-Namco were not able to reach a consensus to re-release some of those classic titles from SEGA’s glory days. It is good to see that SEGA is still open to the idea of it, so a possibility of it happening is not completely off the table.

What classic titles that appeared on SEGA consoles would you like to see remade in 3D? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. I still want Outrun 2019 , eh, I think I’m the only one that really loved that game.
Super Fantasy Zone would be a good addition too, since they did everything else in the series minus the maze game.

Third party wise, dunno if its possible but Panorama Cotton is kinda begging for a 3D classics adaption.
Burning Force would be great, though I’d rather have a port of the arcade version.
Though I think I’d like the 32x Zaxxon game get the 3D treatment, I guess thats first party though hmm.

A lot of third party games are unlikely to have a chance though, especially some that could benefit from the 3D treatment sadly but it would certainly be great if a few could manage it.

      1. Oh how I’d love to see Outrun 2019 restored with a CD audio soundtrack, cut things brought back in, glitches fixed and proper saving. Alas it may not be popular enough for that to be done.
No one really plays the whole game through before they judge it perhaps but it was the Outrun game that out preformed all other Outruns on the very console they barely managed to get a proper port to.
Sure wish I could hear the music remixed, it was sadly limited due to hardware limitations.

        1. It truly is my favourite outrun game

2nd place would be outrun 2006 coast to coast

The music was amazing. It was one of the first video games i played alongside other mega drive classics such as Streets of rage and robocop vs the terminator!

          1. Yes Outrun 2019 is a favorite of mine too.
I still whistle some of the songs and the overall game is fun once you get around how the jet engine works.
Outrun 2006 could use a re-release without the licensed models perhaps.
Perhaps replace them with Sega game inspired cars.

          2. Same, though if using Unreal 4 I’d almost rather make it myself. :3
Night Striker would be good remade in that engine too. xD

          3. Why dont you do it then? id support it 100% and i doubt sega would bitch over a small game like outrun 2019?

          4. Well a car with a jet engine is generic enough really and there are a lot of Outrun clones that do just fine say on the android market.
I’d love to try something in the Outrun 2019 style, always wanted to, but personally I still need to learn Unreal 4 engine among other things.
Though this does inspire me to try modeling the Outrun 2019 car again.
I need a lot of practice. xD
There’s some indie games out there that try to capture a similar style but its usually more of an object avoiding focus than racing.

          5. Just thinking about it gives me the shivers!

You could use Unity! it isnt as good as UE4 but its a good engine neverthless and great for indie type projects like what this could be

          6. Heh ya, the thought runs in my head a lot personally.
Unity is pretty good though Unreal4 looks interesting too.
There’s one called SuperPowers for indie devs which is completely free and might be better practice, plus it could be used for more 32-bit style games perhaps.
Would be fun to make a prototype or just anything outrun styled like that.
Perhaps there is an open source outrun like game engine out there already, worth a dig.
