Xenocider’s Kickstarter campaign has been canceled
We’ve been pretty excited about Xenocider – a Space Harrier inspired, on-rails shooter that was planned for the Dreamcast by developer Retro Sumus.
But as excited as we were for the game, its Kickstarter campaign didn’t go exactly as planned, and Retro Sumus has canceled the project today with six days remaining, after only raising about $24,000 of its $92,000 goal.
“We have learned A LOT from this. We have made mistakes, of course, and we know we can do it better and come back stronger than ever,” Retro Sumus wrote in a campaign update. “Perhaps we put too much trust in our product and underestimated the importance of better advertising, of having good contacts, and whatnot.”
While this news is certainly disappointing to those looking forward to the game, all hope isn’t lost as the team still plans to continue work on the game.
“We will keep working on Xenocider, on alternative ways of making it happen, because we love our project and are deeply proud of what we were (and still are) intending to create,” the update read.
“Those of you who were fans or followers of Retro Sumus already know we like keeping you guys informed of what we’re up to. We have no plans of changing that. This is only a good bye for now. We will be back, and we will be better.”
We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on Xenocider’s progress going forward, and we wish Retro Sumus luck in continuing development of the game.

I don’t think the problem is advertising alone.
Might be the price tag for the game.
Which is pretty average when you take a look at Pier Solar, Elysian Shadows or Saber Rider KS campaigns, also considering international shipping was included, and that DC fans supported the game in the form of physical copies very actively. We failed to engage a wider audience and we know that, but honestly, we don’t think the prices were the main problem.
You are correct those games are that price. It is nice that you have included international shipping! I don’t know about Saber Rider but Elysian Shadows and Pier Solar are like loooonnng RPG’s. But what about the most recent Kickstarter Alice Dreams Tournament?
Also SLaVE is half the price along with every other game in the GSP catalogue.
Good luck and let us know however we at Sega Nerds, DCS, and DC Emu help you!
Also, Chris (and the rest of the Seganerds staff), thank you too for spreading the word and all that. I really need the KS hangover to pass now and rethink our strategy in the following weeks, but we really appreciate all the support from fans and the media. Thanks again.
