yuzopic.jpgYou might know Yuzo Koshiro for his musical works on popular Sega series’ like Shenmue, Streets of Rage, and Shinobi. Lately he hasn’t been working with Sega much, but its always good to know more about our favorite composers.

Koshiro says his most memorible moment in composing was when he did the Shenmue OST, I think that game has been memorible to all of us.When asked if he wanted a Streets of Rage revival, he responded with hopes for one. A new Streets of Rage with Koshiro on sountrack duty is a step in the right direction.

Sega Game Spoilers: Streets of Rage

Size doesn’t matter, (at least that’s what my hookers keep telling me), and so after the long, wonderful videos from last week’s SGS, this week I think it’s best to bring it on, short and sweet.

This week we take a look at the original Streets of Rage on the Megadrive/Genesis.  Admittedly, being a 16-bit title, it does not have any fancy cutscenes, nor a particularly deep storyline.  So what is there to see?

Well one thing is that this game offered two ending credits.  It was also one of the first games I played which gave you an option, which could affect the final outcome of the game, (I’m sure there were many before - but it was a first for me).

The future for Streets of Rage?

No this is not a new version of Streets of Rage 2, from Sega, but rather some cleverly written code by some random guy on Youtube called bigjohn8411.  Here is all he had to say on the matter, from the video info.

a new way to play the classic, streets of rage 2. a very fun script i wrote. “

I’m not sure if this video is totally legit (for all we know there could be a another person hiding behind camera with the real controller), but let’s take it for face value, and say it is real.  It is pretty cool work for some random person.

What would be good would be to see if Sega could make something like this a reality for a new Streets of Rage game.  It would definitely be a good work out for the player’s arms, and looks pretty good fun.

Streets of Rage 2 now on XBLA

Streets of Rage 2 XBLA

That’s right, Streets of Rage 2 is now available for the Sega Vintage Collection on Xbox Live Arcade. By the looks of our forums, quite a few of you already know about this, but for those that don’t check XBLA for new releases as often, I’m telling you.

Like all Vintage Collection titles (so far), the game comes with some enhancements such as “smooth graphics” (which I actually think look terrible, but I guess some people prefer them), and achievements. Plus, this version of Streets of Rage 2 features online for two players, in co-op and battle modes.

Speaking of achievements, the game features 12 ways to unlock those much sought-after points. Some of these are incredibly easy, like “pick up a knife” or “pick up a pipe.” But then you get some which seem pretty challenging, like “Hard Win - Beat the game without using a special attack” and “Perfect Win - Beat the game with using a continue.” Just before writing this, I gave the game a quick spin, and I am halfway through level 3 without losing a single life, so I guess I’m almost on my way for the “Perfect Win.”

I should also give a special thanks to one of our site/forums members, Diogo, who interrupted my intense playing of BioShock to inform me that Streets of Rage 2 was now on XBLA. At which point I messaged him back, saved my game and quickly went to the Xbox Live Marketplace. Yes, it seems that even beautiful, modern masterpieces such as BioShock cannot hold me back from some classic Sega gaming!

Streets of Rage 2 will set you back 400 Microsoft Points, and is available in all regions.
