SEGA teases ‘SEGA Forever’ in the most awesomely retro way possible

We reported a while ago that SEGA looked to be releasing a new service called ‘SEGA Forever’. Nothing was confirmed, but all signs were hinting that it could be a new retro gaming service for mobile devices.

Well it looks like those signs could be right on the money, as SEGA has sent out some brilliant little teasers in the form of cassettes containing music from classic SEGA games, such as Space Harrier, Outrun, Phantasy Star II, Shining Force II, Vectorman and several other Mega Drive/Genesis titles.

It also came with a note saying: “Cassette tapes changed music forever. We’re about to do the same with retro gaming n mobile. From SEGA, with love.”

In case you’re wondering if the cassette is real or fake, we made the fun little video above. It really does contain the songs – which is awesome.

As I say, it looks like SEGA Forever will be a service delivering retro SEGA games to mobile phones. Which games will be on it? Well from the songs on the cassette, I reckon those games could be a safe bet!

Stay tuned – we’re hoping SEGA will reveal more at E3 this week! In the meantime, I’m really happy that I still have a stereo with built in cassette deck! …

I could recognize that hand anywhere…. and its the first time I’ve seen it too. Maybe…. hmm, from that angle anyway.

You better keep that thing in a sealed safe tempature box, they don’t trust just anyone with their mix tapes you know.
Actually surprised you still have a cassette player that still works.
Glad you gave it a play just for the sake of it.
        Don’t forget to rewind lol.

Ironically enough I got annoyed when they took the classic Crazy Taxi off the Play Store and by sheer luck I spotted it again this last week (same old classic gameplay, looks like they’ve added ads in but that is about it and doesn’t bother me in the slightest). Been playing the heck out of that. And gazilliionaire isn’t too bad either for yet another idle clicker.

Give me more sega classics on mobile and done right. Bonus points if you can make them controller friendly on Android TV boxes. I’ll gladly throw money your way Sega.

Doing it on mobile seems like a really odd choice… Very few people have gamepads compatible with an Android device, and most of the games listed require too fine of control to be done with a touch pad (have you tried the Android version of Sonic CD? Technically a Sega CD and not Genesis/Mega Drive game, but the point is the same- you can download it for free on Amazon if you want to try and see why this won’t work very well).

Regardless, PC should be a shoe-in, and hopefully they’ll be thinking about the 3DS too.

Ha, I used to make so many mixtapes of Sega Genesis music I swear.
No one understood the greatness that was Vectorman soundtrack…. neither do I looking back but dang it that crap had to be in the car!
If only I knew about Contra Hardcorps back then.
Streets of Rage, Sonic 3, Outrun 2019, Pac Mania… it was good, all had to be on tape among others.
Just to annoy my family with dreaded “video game music” good times….. then I got a CD walkman and listened to the Sonic CD and Sonic 3D blast tracks a lot.

I do hope Sega Forever will actually “change retro gameing on mobile forever” and not you know, do something lazy but I guess any improvement is good right about now.

Please don’t make it a subscription streaming service, Sega. Please make it a store app to buy actual games.

Thats so cool. I’d totally flip out if SEGA would release a limited edition mega drive console at some point!

So…Will they use a Retroarch solution for emulation?
