RetroN 5 adds Power Base Converter support, releases Dec. 10 for $99

We were already pretty damn excited for Hyperkin’s latest Frankenstein video game system the RetroN 5, which will play Genesis, NES, Super NES and Gameboy Advance games. But we got even more excited when the company announced it modified the console’s shell to support the Power Base Converter, allowing you to play Master System games.

The RetroN 5 will release on Dec. 10 in North America and Europe for $99 and €89.99, respectively.

I was able to check out a RetroN 5 at this year’s Too Many Games expo and was impressed with the quality system. It’ll most definitely be on my Christmas wish list!

  1. I just so happy to have that converter! Awesome!
Though I’d really just prefer an SD card slot to play homebrew roms as well.
Still I definitely want one at that price point regardless.
Hope that gamepad works on PC somehow too.

  2. Double comment bonus!

So, do we know if this one works with all of the special chip sets like the Super FX chip, the Sega DSP/SVP, or even the oddball one from NES Castlevania III (My FX Twin won’t play it)?

    1. Very good question man, been asking around to seek the answer, but none is coming just yet.

Very excited at the prospect of not having to wire up all those retro consoles.
Maybe I’m being greedy, but I also wish they’d included Atari 2600 and 5200 slot and am confused as to why there is no direct Master System slot.

Once the patent on the N64 runs out next year, I expect they’ll look to include that slot on a future machine, like a Retron 6, so I may wait till then.

Also hoping the system is compatible with the 32X, the Mega-CD.
