Altered Beast is August’s Game of the Month

It turns out SEGA Genesis shooter, M.U.S.H.A., is pretty badass. You might have discovered its brilliance if you joined us last month in playing it when it was the featured game in the SEGA Nerds Game of the Month Club.

This month, we’re continuing our Genesis love fest … that’s because we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of SEGA’s 16-bit, blast processing behemoth! We’re going back all the way to the launch of the Genesis to play us some f**king Altered Beast!

Why Altered Beast?

Well, for one, it’s super badass. Get this, you’re a long dead Centurion named Jared (OK, that’s not really your name) who is resurrected by Zeus one day to rescue his daughter from this asshole named Neff. He imbues you with powers to transform into all sorts of awesome animal creatures, like the woodland bear, the medieval dragon and a God damn werewolf.

Aside from the awesomeness of the game itself, Altered Beast is a very historically significant title in SEGA’s arcade and console library that helped shape its identity for years to come. For one, its mature theme helped set it apart from the kiddie-friendly offerings of Nintendo. And, its arcade roots paved the way for SEGA to continue porting its coin-op titles to its home consoles for years to come. Lastly, Altered Beast helped anchor the Genesis in the years before Sonic the Hedgehog sped onto the scene, even becoming a pack-in title later in its life.

How it works!

Oh, you’re a new member to the Game of the Month Club, you say? Well, here’s how it works:

It’s a month-long discussion, so we encourage you to participate in the forum thread as often as possible as you experience the game. As usual, we have several articles specific to our Game of the Month. The Requiem has just published his one on one interview with Zeus, who played an important, albeit lazy role in Altered Beast. I also have a review of the game that will soon be published, and we’ll have a roundtable discussion on the SEGA Nerdcast, where we’ll read some of the best forum posts on air.

How you can play!

C’mon, surely you have a complete, in-box copy of Altered Beast sitting proudly on your gaming shelf as we speak, right? OK, fine, let’s pretend you don’t. Well, you’re in luck because the game is very common, available digitally almost on every platform and super cheap!

Here are your alternatives:

– Steam for $2.99
– Amazon for $2.99
– Xbox Marketplace for $4.99
– PlayStation Store for $4.99
3DS eShop for $5.99

Also, remember to visit the the Altered Beast official forum thread! See ya in the forums.
