Pier Solar to appear on XBLA in the future?

We have reported bits and pieces on this game for a while now, but in case you don’t know; Pier Solar is a brand new Mega Drive RPG title being developed and published by Water Melon Development, a small team of dedicated people, it seems.

The game originally started out as a small community homebrew project, initially dubbed “Tavern RPG,” which later evolved into Pier Solar, and the game production became a more serious project as the Water Melon team was formed.

Anyway, enough of the history lesson, in a recent interview with CVG, Water Melon spoke about how they would like to see the game also appear on current consoles, and are in particular looking at the Xbox 360 as a possible place to see the game in the future.

OutRun Online Arcade to come as early as January?

7:21am 24 Dec '08

When Sega announced OutRun Online Arcade, for XBLA and PSN recently, the only details of the release date given were “early 2009.”  In terms of gaming that could pretty much mean anywhere as late April/May 2009, which would be annoying - though I guess not as bad as having to wait a whole year.

But good news, it seems that Sega is planning to release the game as early as January 2009!  According to Siliconera, the above image shows a promotional poster from last week’s Asia Game Show, and while it is a little blurry here, Siliconera say that the poster states a Janauary release (I think it’s the bit next to the Sega logo).

I have no reason to doubt Siliconera myself, and if this is true then great news - we only have to wait about 4/5 more weeks (at the most) until the game is released!

More Sega classics on the way to XBLA and PSN?

According to IGN, several Mega Drive titles have popped up on the ESRB website.  Namely, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II and Gunstar Heroes are said to be listed on the site.

As of yet, no release date or pricing has been confirmed.  But if these games are going to be released on both XBLA and PSN then I have just one question; What the hell is Sega playing at?!

All four of the titles have been available on the Wii’s Virtual Console for a while now, and three of the four titles are going to be available on the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection - which is being released for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well.

The pricing for Mega Drive titles on XBLA is normally around the £5 mark, but the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection will no doubt be around the £30-£40 price range, but will contain 40 Mega Drive titles (plus extras).  Surely anyone with half a brain can work out that buying the collection is a much better deal.

I just don’t get why Sega seems intent on releasing games several times, for the same platforms.  Surely it would be much more advisable to release other Mega Drive titles not featured on the upcoming collections pack?

Still good news I guess if you really just want to play Sonic 3 on its own, and don’t want any of the other top games featured in the collection, like the Shining Force titles, Streets of Rage or Vectorman etc…

Sega shares a few more OutRun Online Arcade screenshots

Sega has just released a few more screenshots for OutRun Online Arcade, for XBLA and PSN, a game I think a lot of Sega Nerds are dying to play.

There is a chance that you have seen some of these screenshots on other sites already.  That’s because these are the screens that Sega gave to certain sites exclusively, for a limited period of time (Sega Nerds included).  But now the exclusive period is over and we can all enjoy looking at these extra images (after the break).

REZ reduced for XBLA ‘Black Friday’

For all you US living people, today is ‘Black Friday’ - the day after Thanksgiving.  Well you should all know that, I’m letting the rest of the world know the score.

Black Friday is normally the day where people rush to the shops for some crazy sales, and this year the sales have reached the online stores, XBLA and PSN.

The bad news is that these sales are only available for US Xbox/PS3 owners and not everything is reduced, plus there is not a great deal of Sega content in the sales.

But the good news is that one of XBLA best games, REZ has been reduced from 800 points to 500 points.  Definitely worth it for such a cracking title.  Also Sega-related is the new Sonic Unleashed theme, down from 250 points to 180 points.

You might be wondering about any Sega stuff on PSN, but (after scratching my head for a while) I don’t think Sega has actually released anything on PSN - at least not anything that you pay for.  And I certainly didn’t see anything in the PSN sales list by Sega.

If you want to check out what else is on the XBLA Black Friday list, check out Major Nelson’s blog.

G-Spot: Is making Golden Axe: Beast Rider a bad idea?

GA GSpot

There comes a time in every Sega Nerd’s life when you have to question what Sega is doing with their classic franchises.  This could be something as basic as “Why haven’t they made a new game of X, Y or Z.”  [X, Y and Z of course being Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and Panzer Dragoon Saga ;o) ]

Or it could be the question - “Is releasing a new game of *blank* actually a good idea, or will it ruin the franchise?”

It happened with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, some people ended up loving the game and others berate it for not being similar enough to or as good as the original.

In this case, game *Blank* is Golden Axe: Beast Rider.

There has been a bit of rift amongst gamers and Sega Nerds with the upcoming Golden Axe game.  It all first came about, when it was announced that the game would only feature Tyris Flare as a playable character, and none of the other main characters which made the series famous.

But I think people should sit down and have a look back at just what the Golden Axe series actually entails.

Rumour: Hidden Saturn game coming to XBLA?

Death TankAccording to website Gamerbytes, an old Saturn ‘classic’ might be making it’s way to XBLA, Death Tank, after the game was recently added to the USK, German Rating Board.

I say ‘classic’ because I have never heard anyone talk about Death Tank before now, but in the short few minutes of knowing the name (and promptly searching for more information), everyone seems to be raving about it.

Sega playing hide ‘N seek with old source codes

For those of you are wondering why Sega seem to only be putting Megadrive games on XBLA and VC (with a few Master System games on VC too), and perhaps want to see some classic old Sega System 16/24 arcade games, then Simon Jeffery has the answer… they are hiding.

In another (and supposedly last) E3 interview video with Simon Jeffery, the boys at Kotaku asked that very question.  The reason for there not being more (or really any) old System 16 or System 24 games on the download services is basically down to the fact that Sega cannot find the source codes for the games.

Happy Tree Friends finally available after many false alarms

Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm

After being delayed numerous times, Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm is finally available for purchase and download on both Xbox Live Arcade and PC. The game promises cartoony violence that stays true to the spirit of the online and TV show franchise. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing is up to you.

You can learn more about the game at Sega’s own page for it, and you can purchase the PC version from some shady online retailer or from Steam. Unfortunately, there is no demo, on the PC, for semi-interested parties to sample the game before deciding on a purchase, and that sets off some warning signs in my mind. Proceed with caution.

Happy Tree Friends releasing soon, you gonna buy it?

Happy Tree Friends is releasing this Wednesday, and there hasn’t seemed to be much excitement over this downloadable title at Sega Nerds HQ, so we thought we’d ask our loyal readers what they thought of Stainless Games’ new product.
