The latest issue of Game Informer magazine has the very first preview of Aliens: Colonial Marines, The first game of two announced by Sega. This is the first person shooter (FPS) developed by Gearbox Software and should be hitting store shelves Q4 of 2008.

We don’t have the scans yet but we will get them up as soon as we can, until then I will give you a quick rundown of what we know so far!

Aliens : Colonial Marines is a First Person Shooter with mechanics that stress working together as a unit. Four Colonial Marines investigate the Sulaco. Unlike many FPS titles, there is not one central hero character, the role is shared among the whole squad. The game reinforces that notion by assigning the player to control a set marine for a particular mission; you will experience every one’s perspective.

“A few years ago, we made a list of a lot of projects that we would really like to work on. At the top of my list was Aliens”
Brian Martel, creative director

“We’re finally at the point where the game in a similar blockbuster style as the movie was - and be a legitimate treatment, not a watered-down version.” Brian Cozzens, art director

Aliens: Colonial Marines

The cover of Game Informer’s March issue promises a “world exclusive” first look at Sega and Gearbox’s first-person shooter based on the popular Aliens license. The game is apparently titled Aliens: Colonial Marines.

The info blurb for the magazine issue also states that the game will be coming to PC and unspecified consoles in 2009, and will feature squad-based gameplay. Let’s hope it’s better than the franchise’s other recent outings.

Two developers working with Sega make ‘top 10 upcoming’ list

Obsidian Petroglyph Top 10

Tech website primotechnology.com just put out a list of the 10 developers that they feel have the most upcoming promise.

The list contains some fairly well-known developers, plus some pretty much unheard-of teams. The list is based on the developer’s previous titles plus the upcoming titles that they are working on.

Why should this news concern us? Well, two of the developers listed are working with Sega on their games. In fact the #3 and #1 positions are where we find these two developers.

Who are the two developers? Well, it’s RTS specialists Petroglyph at #3. Petroglyph is currently working on  Universe at War: Earth Assault for the PC and Xbox 360.

Why It Made The List: Good, long-lasting real-time strategies are few and far between these days. So going into the market can be a bit daunting without the proper talent. Thankfully, Petroglyph Games has managed to wrangle in a few members from game series’ such as Command and Conquer and Dune. After creating their first game, Star Wars: Empire at War, licensed under LucasArts, they’ve teamed up with game publisher Sega to create a series all their own. Universe at War: Earth Assault is looking to set the stage for cross platform battles through Xbox Live and Games for Windows. It’ll be interesting to see how Petroglyph handle and balance the obvious advantage PC users have with micromanagement in the game, which should in turn set the stage for other cross platform gaming.

Wow, I’m really starting to like this Simon Jeffrey character. In an interview with Gamespot, the Sega of America COO talked about everything from how development is going with Golden Axe, why Sega seems to have shifted focus away from its Japanese development teams and he even talked about the changes in this year’s E3.

While you can read the full interview at Gamespot, here’s a breakdown of what Jeffrey revealed:

Gearbox chief sheds light on Aliens FPS

060307ali.jpgOf all Sega’s announced titles, we probably know the least about the upcoming Aliens games. The FPS is being developed by Gearbox, while Obsidian is at the helm of the RPG. However, Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford shed a bit of light on the FPS during UbiDays in Paris recently.

According to Pitchford, Gearbox is working closely with Obsidian, which is developing an Aliens RPG for Sega, but his game is going in a different direction than that of Obsidian.

Additionally, he said players will take the role of a colonial Marine, who, no doubt, will blast aways hundreds of nasty aliens on his way of saving the world. Hmmm, sounds a bit like another popular FPS that will be released later this year, eh?

Lastly, he said to look for the game to release in 2009 on next-gen consoles.
