TGS update… my hotel room

Well as you should have read by now, I am currently in Japan, getting ready for the Tokyo Game Show.

What you should have also read is that I had my bag stolen… and then returned a few hours later.  But because of that, I was late setting off to the Kotaku TGS party.  It was getting too late, in fact.  So I decided not to go.

My hotel is quite far from the centre of Tokyo, where the party was held, and would have taken a long time to get there, and I would have needed to change trains several times… as I find using public transport hard enough in my own country, I thought doing it in a country, where I can’t understand a single word of the language, would be a very bad idea.

So I ended up spending my first night in Japan, by going to ‘CLUB SEGA’ (basically a Sega-exclusive arcade), though quite a small one I think.  I shall go again tomorrow and upload images and maybe videos for everyone (too many people there at 9:00pm on a Monday, for me to record).

After CLUB SEGA, I decided to while my night away in one of the hotel bars.  The bar on the 24th floor of the hotel in fact.  So I had a pretty nice view of the area, including a big Baseball stadium (I saw a load of kids wearing baseball shirts near Club Sega, so I assume they had a match on tonight… not the kids, I mean actual big players).

But the video you all see (above) is what happens when I decide to record my way back down from the bar into my room giving you a very bad guided tour.. after a few cocktails and some Guinness. Explanation after the jump.

Graham has landed in Tokyo for TGS

sonic.jpgLike Major Nelson, I had some passport issues and was unable to make it to this year’s Tokyo Game Show. However, Graham still made the trip, and I can definitely say, he’s doing okay by himself … so far.

Apparently, on the way to his hotel, his bag with all his clothes were stolen. Having plans to attend the Kotaku all-night-debauchery party and only in possession of the clothes on his back, he was understandably quite upset.

Thankfully, Graham’s choice in clothing leaves much to be desired and the thief brought his bag to the nearest police station, which just so happens to be down the street from his hotel. So, yes, Graham is now reunited with his collection of denim shorts and plaid button-up shirts.

Seriously though, expect to get some great coverage of TGS from Graham over the next several days, while we here at Sega Nerds HQ place bets for how long we think he’ll survive by himself in Japan.

I give him two days before he’s kidnapped by the Yakuza and forced into a life of prostitution and circus performances.

Rez HD

Following last night’s surprise announcement that Dreamcast/PS2 classic Rez would be making its way to the Xbox Live Arcade service, 1Up.com has more info and the first screenshots of the upcoming game straight from Microsoft’s pre-TGS event.

Q Entertainment, the company Rez and Space Channel 5 creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi formed after leaving Sega, will be handling the conversion. Expect high-definition widescreen output and 5.1 surround sound.

“We are excited to announce that Rez will be given a new life, this time in digital form. The game will be presented in hi-definition and will be accessible to those who did not have a chance to experience Rez the first time around,” said Mizuguchi. “Personally, Rez has been and will always be a lifelong concept. I hope to take what I learned from the experience of creating the original game and look forward to taking it to a whole new level in the future.”

Rez HD is scheduled to be published by Sega in Q1 2008, and does not have an announced price yet.

Sega to have slave labor during TGS

070906sonic.jpgOne of the most interesting parts of any Sega Nerds staff writer’s day is attempting to use online translators to try to understand Sega of Japan’s insane language. Today is no different, but I think I may have unearthed a bit of news here.

According to Sega’s official TGS site, it is holding a contest to allow a person to be its “special correspondent” during the event. This person will get the opportunity to visit the Sega booth and attend meetings during the public days and report his findings at Sega’s site.

Here’s some more information via the “powerful” Babblefish translator:

It received with the day Sega booth smell, if, preferentially be able to experience five titles where especially popularity is expected with the Sega booth, furthermore to answer to appraisal item it can receive, in everyone of the “Sega correspondent” it can exchange with the cute present we transfer the “Sega correspondent pass”.

Requirements are kind of vague, but apparently, you need to be 17 and submit your application by Sept. 17. By the way, if there are any Sega Nerds out there who can translate Japanese, e-mail us ASAP, because we have some work for you! :)

Today, Sega of Japan’s Tokyo Game Show website opened for business. At the moment, it’s pretty limited, but you can at least see what the full site will look like when all of the links work.

There are five slots at the top of the page for Sega’s big games of this year’s TGS, three of which are already filled with NiGHTs, Imabikisou and Valkyrie of the Battlefield.

Be sure to stick with Sega Nerds throughout TGS for complete Sega coverage.

Sega’s TGS floor plan revealed

TGS Floor Small

The floor plan for the Tokyo Game Show 2007 has been revealed, as you can see.

The great news is that it seems Sega will have one of the largest stands there, which can only really mean one of two things: either they have a ton of great games to show off, or just some ridiculously large exhibits. Fingers crossed the first will be true.

By the looks of the map, Sega will have the joint second-largest stand there. Judging by the layout, it shares a (roughly) same-sized space as Konami and Square-Enix.

All us Sega Nerds can be proud that Sega will (read: should) have a stronger presence than Tecmo, Namco-Bandai, Capcom, SNK Playmore, Koei and, (quite surprisingly) Microsoft. I say surprisingly for Microsoft because I would have thought that the Tokyo Game Show would have been a great opportunity for Microsoft to try and impress the Japanese community, and get the Xbox 360 sales up in the Asian region.

Keep tuned to Sega Nerds, because when TGS comes around, we (Chris and I) should be there reporting on the great line-up first hand!

TGS 2007 Sega lineup, definitely fake

12:42am 6 Aug '07

TGS 2007 Fake LineupOk, ok now.  At Sega Nerds, we don’t like to boast about things we know, but in this case I am proud that we stuck to our guns.  If you recall a few days ago, we posted up the rumour regarding Segas line up of games, for this years Tokyo Games Show (aka TGS).

Our article clearly stated our immediate doubts about the lineup, which included games such as; Shenmue III, Samba De Amigo for the PSP, a Sonic RPG for the 360 and PS3 (when we should all know that the only reported Sonic RPG is for the DS) and other random ones like Virtua Fighter Kids for the Wii…. the list goes on.

In a nutshell we took the whole thing with a pinch of salt, and warned you that it was no doubt a fake.  However, many other sites, bigger sites - I shall not name, names (as we can all make mistakes) - took the news as being solid.  The fact that they had completely random titles on the list, plus games that Sega have already released; Alien Syndrome, After Burner Black Falcon (that was months ago!),  should really have been a signal, for all to question the list.

No doubt some of you wonderful Nerds had been lying at night, wide-eyed, with fingers and toes crossed, praying that the list would be true, and that Sega had finally decided to release Shenmue III.  Well I’m sorry to say it, but ‘we told you so’.

Rumored Sega TGS 2007 lineup too good to be true

One thing I love about game expos is the ridiculous rumors that go flying around about what will be revealed and games shown. Of course, many rumors are completely false, but it helps build excitement for the upcoming show.

A user at the Korean game site Ruliweb.com has posted what appears to be Sega’s TGS 2007 lineup. The first portion of the list is filled with games that Sega’s already announced, so there are no surprises there, but oh boy, perusing through the latter portion will really get a Sega Nerd’s blood flowing.
