Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 2 trailer

I can just about understand how some people like the concept of Shiren games, and other “roguelike” titles, but I think for many gamers they are just plain frustrating. Chris kindly reviewed the first Shiren DS for us a while ago, receiving mixed opinions in the comments section.Â
I spent a good couple of  hours playing the first DS game, only to be randomly turned into a rice cake and then beaten to death - while I couldn’t run away. It just plain pissed me off, and henceforth the game has been used to correct a wobbly table… in hell.
Anyway, if you do enjoy roguelike games, then rejoice and watch the above trailer.

Time to see some Shiren 3 footage

Sega has finally unleashed some gameplay footage for Shiren the Wanderer 3: The Sleeping Princess in the Clockwork Palace, and I have to say, it doesn’t look too bad. Of course, what else would a Shiren commercial feature other than showing you all the different ways you can expect to die horrible deaths while losing all the progress you made in the game?
But hey, we’re not bitter or anything.

Sega publishing Shiren 3 in Japan

In case your ass is feeling a little better after the reaming Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer gave you, I bring you some good or bad news (depending on how much you like your ass reamed) - Sega is publishing Chunsoft’s Shiren 3 for the Nintendo Wii in Japan, and it just released a couple new videos on its site.
While these videos don’t show anything in terms of gameplay, it does look to promise some pretty epic moments, which is kinda inspiring … that is until you remember how insane the first game in the series is. If you haven’t had the honor, just read my Shiren the Wanderer review.
There’s no word yet if Sega plans to bring this game to the West yet, and I certainly won’t lose sleep if it doesn’t. However, roguelikes have a pretty loyal following, but they’ll never reach the popularity of other genres due to their ridiculous difficulty.
Review: Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer

Imagine if Satan were to create a video game. If he did, he’d probably join forces with Chunsoft to create Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer.
You see, this game is evil right down to its core. It does everything imaginable to drive you crazy, make you want to turn it off and pull out your hair in a fit of rage. And the chances of you doing that very early into the game are pretty good.
However, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a look at this game’s long and storied past and why this very well might be the most evil game ever to grace our planet.

Sega shipped Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer to retailers a few days ago, but I’m still waiting on my copy of show up in my mailbox. Until then, we’re going to have to look at what the other guys are scoring Sega’s newest Nintendo DS title.
- 1up scores it 83/100: It’s far more demanding than its fellow DS-based roguelikes, lacking, say, the cuddly mascots of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon or the cumulative experience-building of Izuna. But it’s remarkably well crafted, with streamlined gameplay that belies its impressive substance.
- Nintendo Power scores it 65/100: Starting from scratch every time you have bad luck will be frustrating, but if you can get past the setbacks, you’ll enjoy a solid DS adventure.
- IGN scores it 65/100: The random dungeons are oftentimes poorly laid out, and the turn based gameplay can lead to a slow, jerky experience. Still, Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is a game that will certainly give players a run for their money, if only due to the fact that it takes forever to beat.
Not too shabby so far, but with the game so new, there aren’t a ton of reviews available yet to go by. So if there are any Sega Nerds out there who already own the game, why don’t you tell us what you think of the game.
New Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer DS screens released

While most Sega Nerds are busy talking about Sega’s recently released Mario & Sonic or the upcoming NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams, most don’t seem to be giving the DS’Â Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer much thought.
To help change that, Sega released a fresh batch of screens, for the DS version. We managed to get a sneak-peek of the Wii version, at TGS, but not a lot has been heard of the handheld counterpart.
Developed by Chunsoft, this popular Japanese RPG will be hitting the States for the first time ever. According to Sega, the series has sold 1.5 million copies in Japan, so it appears to be pretty successful. The game will feature randomly generated dungeons as well as a “Rescue” feature that uses the DS’ WiFi capabilities in some way.
Sega said it’s trying to get back to the 16-bit style with Shiren the Wanderer, and it’s pretty apparent. I’ve been wanting a good DS title for awhile, and it appears this could be it. Shiren the Wanderer hits stores in February.
See the rest after the jump.
