Wow Ethan, what the hell’s happened to you? You look like you’ve just fought through mounds of psychotic homeless people who are hellbent on kicking your ass or something. It appears the past few years have been pretty damn hard, especially compared to what you looked like back in 2005.

As Sega announced Condemned 2: Bloodshot at its Sega Gamer’s Day a couple days ago, we completely missed the new character art of Ethan, and all we can say is “Damn dude, do you like need a nap or something?”

In his first outing, Ethan seemed to be a pretty normal guy until he started being haunted by a deranged serial killer while realizing he had some pretty strange abilities.

Apparently, the events that transpired have “left him a broken man – a desperate burnout drifting aimlessly through society in an inexplicable decline,” according to Sega’s press release. Yeah … ya think?

In the game, Ethan must find his missing partner while “fighting inner demons throughout his one-man investigation into a sinister conspiracy, [he] will need to use anything and everything in the environment to survive as he unravels the mysteries shrouding the city in darkness.”

Well, sign me up for two. I can’t friggin’ wait.

Sega Rally Impressions

IGN has a great preview of the latest Sega Rally build shown at the Sega Gamers Day event. Although they didn’t get a hands-on, they did get to see how detailed the game is and how it’s coming along. The version they saw was demoed on the PS3 and from what they have said the game looked very pretty indeed.

Sega fans may have been worried that the new Sega Racing Studio at Sega Europe weren’t up to the job of making a Sega Rally game, but so far it seems they are doing the series justice. This is one game I can’t wait to get my grubby mitts on.

Here’s a quote:

When the demo build was fired up (on a PS3), it was easy to see where the attention to detail had been placed. The first stage we were shown was a lush tropical setting with mountains and waterfalls in the distance. A shanty town marked the starting line, where a blue rally car sat. We were told that the design team has put in a specific paint shader to show off various hues and color gradients in the vehicle, as well as reflect the environment in the glossy exterior of the car. However, the finer details didn’t stop there, as the attention to detail extended down to individual tire treads, and finer motion of brakes and brake calipers. Since the car was in pristine condition at the start, it had to get a little muddy. After taking it down the track from the harder packed earth into muddier terrain and water, we picked up on the caked on grime that layered the sides and front of the machine.

Trigger-happy gamers rejoice! In addition to Sega’s numerous other announcements today, they also revealed Ghost Squad for the Nintendo Wii. The game will be a port of the 2004 arcade hit, and include additional modes exclusive to the home version. The arcade original was developed by AM2, well-known for their other famous arcade shooter series, Virtua Cop. AM2 is also developing the Wii version.

Ghost Squad will feature four gameplay modes, including a full port of the original arcade game. Multiplayer features will also be included, supporting up to four players! The game boasts three different missions with branching paths and multiple objectives, such as rescuing hostages, apprehending suspects (read: shoot the hell out of them), and deactivating bombs. There are 25 different weapons to find and use, not to mention special tools like night vision, thermo vision, and flashlights.

Sega was quick to point out that this is one of the first true light gun games to be brought to the Wii, and promised that the Wii remote is all gamers will need to begin blasting terrorists to hell.

The super popular, super awesome king of RTS games, the Total War series, saw its latest game in the series ‘Medieval 2: Total War’ released near the end of last year. Total War is a history-based RTS where you take control of various countries and empires from history.

In Medieval 2, as the name suggests, you battle across old Europe as knights, go on crusades and eventually discover gunpowder and conquer the Americas. The battles are on a massive scale you haven’t seen anywhere else, with literally thousands of units on screen at once all under your control. In the expansion ‘Kingdoms’ there are a host of new features such as controlling the Aztecs and Native Americans and four grand campaigns.

Universe at War Xbox360

Today, Sega announced that Universe at War, the PC real-time strategy game, is also headed to the Xbox 360, just like the recent Command and Conquer game. RTS games generally don’t fare as well as on consoles compared to PC, as the mouse and keyboard make the thing so much faster and easier.

I’m very excited about this game though, as it’s shaping up to be a cracking RTS. I will most definitely be getting this for the PC and not the Xbox 360 as the PC really does lend itself to these games much more than a controller. But it won’t hurt to release the game on the Xbox 360, and will open the game up to a larger fanbase.

IGN has the first look at Sega/Shiny’s game based on the movie ‘The Golden Compass’. You will play as a little girl named Lyra, a shape-shifting Daemon named Pan and an armored Polar Bear called Lorek as they travel across an alternate universe similar to our own, in their quest to find Lyra’s kidnapped friend.

They will each have a unique gameplay style. For example, Lyra has a special item known as an alethiometer, which helps her find out the truth about people that she interacts with.

The game will be out before the movie and features two levels that are exclusive to the game taken from the books.

Sega finds new friends - Happy Tree Friends

If there was any doubt that Sega would ever support Xbox Live Arcade after yesterday, well, those doubts can now be calmed as the publisher/developer has announced the ultra cute/violent Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm for XBLA and PC.

Once again, Sega isn’t actually developing the title, instead, Stainless Studios is handling the job, and it should be released this fall.

According to Sega’s press release, the game “enables players to control one of three characters; Flippy, the emotionally tattered war-torn bear; Lumpy, the dim-witted blue moose; and Handy, an amputee beaver carpenter always eager to lend a helping limb.”

Players will have highly explosive and lethal resources at their disposal like gasoline, nitroglycerin and concrete “to augment the dynamic 3D environments.” Whatever that means. In total, players will travel through 10 levels including mine shafts, a museum and candy factories.

“We are excited to be partnering with Mondo Media to bring the irreverent comedy of the Happy Tree Friends to gamers worldwide,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, Sega of America, Inc. “The dark humor and twisted characters of Happy Tree Friends will act as a great foundation for creating a fun and entertaining universe for gamers and fans of the show alike.”

Happy Tree Friends is a wildly popular Internet phenomenon that debuted as a television series on G4 TV in the U.S. and on MTV in key markets overseas. Selling over one million DVD copies worldwide, Happy Tree Friends continues to thrill audiences online and maintains its position as a top 10 most downloaded podcast on iTunes.

Kill more homeless in Condemned 2: Bloodshot

There hasn’t been an Xbox 360 game yet that has surpassed Condemned in overall “kick-assyness” in my mind, so you can imagine my excitement when I woke up this morning to find that Sega has finally announced its sequel - Condemned 2: Bloodshot for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for Q1 2008.

Thankfully, you’ll reprise your role as Ethan Thomas who again must venture through dangerous ghetto environments beating crazy homeless people to death with a wooden stick. Additionally, Ethan will get new offensive and defensive moves and an entirely new set of forensic tools.

And if that wasn’t good enough, the game will sport online multiplayer, as well.

I was kind of scared before this announcement because I heard the next game would based on the upcoming Condemned movie, which supposedly has something to do with aliens invading Earth and the main character finds out he’s actually an alien and must choose sides.

Monolith Productions, keep up the great work. If the sequel is anything like the original, it will be one helluva game.

If you’re aching for a new, original RPG from Sega, then you’re gonna get it … kind of. Sega announced today it’s partnering with Gas Powered Games to co-develop an original PC RPG.

SEGA also acquired development powerhouse The Creative Assembly (Total War series) in 2005, and Secret Level (Golden Axe) and Sports Interactive (Soccer Manager series) in 2006.

“We are excited to be part of Sega’s western development strategy,” said Chris Taylor, Creative Director and CEO of Gas Powered Games. “Our focus at Gas Powered Games is to create exciting and visually stunning new worlds coupled with revolutionary game play experiences and we see Sega as the perfect partner in achieving that goal for our next original RPG.”
