Check out this awesome Sega music quiz
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, Retro. Tagged with 32X, Dreamcast, Fan Stuff, Fun Stuff, Game Gear, Genesis, Mega Drive, Quiz, Saturn, Sega Music.

Not sure how many (if any) of you have seen this before, as it’s a couple of months old, but it has only just been brought to our attention. It’s a GamePops quiz all about Sega music.
Basically players are faced with 64 blank tiles. When you click on a tile it plays a 20 second clip of music from a Sega game and you have to type which game you think it is into the box. Simple eh?
Simple, but also fun. It’s a fantastic trip down memory lane for many as the game music sampled is all from Sega-made consoles, from GameGear/Master System up to Dreamcast.
It’s also incredibly frustrating, the amount of clips played that I recognise, but for the life of me can’t remember what game they are from - ooh! And it also reminds me of just how crap video game music is these days - those old Megadrive and even Game Gear tunes are easily the best, I think game companies need to bring back that 16-bit sound.
Anyway if you want to challenge your musical memory and also treat yourself to some good game music, then check out this quiz!
Just a word of warning, not all the games are Sega-made or exclusive to Sega consoles, most are but there’s a few that were popular on Sega consoles even though they might have also appeared on the SNES or Playstation.

Happy (US) birthday Sega Saturn
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, North America, Retro, Video. Tagged with Anniversary, Birthday, Launch Date, Saturn, Tribute.
This kind of slipped us by, but yesterday - May 11th - marked the 14th anniversary of the Sega Saturn’s release in America on 11th May 1995. It would have been great to plan a big celebration… but yeah we forgot about it. Sorry all!
Perhaps we will be better prepared for the 15th anniversary of the Japanese launch this coming November (can’t promise anything though).
Anyway, we had to do something to mark the ocassion and what better than a decent Saturn tribute video that I just found on YouTube? The video shows just some of the great games the Saturn had to offer, but the best bit is the music (I won’t ruin it for you).
Anyway enjoy the video and let us know your fond memories of the Saturn - your favourite games, or perhaps an amusing tale about when you bought the system.
[Special Thanks: RobF - for reminding us!]
[Update] Saturn kiosk for sale on eBay - get in quick
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, Retro. Tagged with Cabinet, ebay, Fan Stuff, Kiosk, Saturn.
You know what? I don’t think I have ever seen a Saturn kiosk before, at least not one quite as cool as this. I can vaguely recall playing on a Saturn in a GAME store long ago, but as far as I remember the kiosk/cabinet was white and quite plain. It seems the US cabinets were much more attractive than our European models.
Anyway, this pretty home for your Saturn is now available on eBay. However, at the time of typing this there is only 9 hours left on the auction. The price is at $200, but the reserve has not yet been met.
The unit dimensions are: 74 x 34 x 24 inches. The approximate weight is over 250 lbs (which will no doubt add a lot to shipping). The cabinet does not come with the TV or the Saturn though - you’ll have to supply those yourself.
Needless to say that this would be a wonderful piece to add to any Sega Nerds collection of console memorabilia. Just better make sure you can afford shipping and have enough space for this beautiful beast.
Full details and additional images on the eBay page.
[Update: You can probably guess that the bidding on this item has now ended. But it looks as though the reserve price had not been met and chances are that the guy might be willing to accept further offers, or he might be putting it back up on eBay soon enough. We shall see.]

Sega patents controller?
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News. Tagged with Controller, Curious, NiGHTS Controller, Patents, Saturn.
This is a bit of a curious post. We have been directed to look at this patent filed by Sega Japan, which shows off plenty of images of a Sega controller.
The curious thing is that the controller looks just like the Saturn’s NiGHTS into Dreams 3D controller, but the patent shows off lots of unique functions and attachments for the controller, such as; infra-red, arcade stick add-ons and even motion control!
Fan releases NiGHTS into Dreams Beta to all
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, Retro. Tagged with an Stuff, Beta, Download, NiGHTS into Dreams, Saturn.

There is a strong chance that some of you have already seen this, downloaded it, played it, bought the t-shirt and are now planning a movie - as the source says it was originally posted a month ago, on November 27th. But it has only just been brought to our attention, and in case some of you have missed it, here we go:
Just over a year ago, one plucky member (and a name many of you might recognise) from the fansite NiD.com, TRAViS, bought the holy grail of NiGHTS products, the original NiGHTS into Dreams Beta disc.
From what I understand the disc cost a small fortune, and was something that practically broke the NiGHTS fan’s bank. But like all strong willed fanatics (God bless them) he still went ahead and bought what he could not quite afford.
New Sonic X-Treme footage released
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, Retro, Video. Tagged with Footage, Leaked, Saturn, Sonic X-Treme, Unreleased.
Some unseen footage from the unreleased Saturn game, Sonic X-Treme, has recently been leaked onto the Internet. The video shows footage from a level called “New Paths,” where the level gimmick appears to be that new pathways unfurl when Sonic steps on certain tiles.
While this level seems to be incredibly small, I quite like the concept behind it. And despite everyone saying it would have most probably played like crap, Sonic X-Treme is still one of those games I wish had been released. It just looks so strange that I gotta play it!
Also, I don’t know if that music was the intended tune for the level, but Sonic Team should take note; it’s catchy, fun and pretty much better than most modern Sonic music.

[Update] Sega Europe asks what your favourite Sega console is
Posted by Graham. Filed under Europe, G, News. Tagged with Dreamcast, Facebook, Fan Stuff, Game Gear, Master System, Mega Drive, Poll, Saturn.

Sega Europe has just added a new poll to their Facebook page, “What’s your favourite SEGA console?”
But before anybody gets excited and starts saying “Omg! Sega is planning on releasing a new machine!” - apparently this poll is just for fun, and curiosity.
Well I guess polls are pretty fun. At the time of writing the Dreamcast is a clear winner, with 50% of the votes, and it seems like there are no votes for the Master System. It’s a tough choice, I pretty much love all of the systems (although Master System is my easily my least favourite).
Anyway, if you want to help show your appreciation for a particular Sega console, then you can check out the poll over at Sega Europe’s Facebook page.
[Update: A very decent little update here, Sega Europe has also posted an article about this poll (mentioning us - yey!) and if you go to the Sega Europe blog post (not Facebook) and leave a comment, stating what your favourite Sega console is, you can win a lovely little Sega goodie bag!]

The fan-made Sega Saturn PC
Posted by George. Filed under George, Japan, PC. Tagged with Fan Stuff, Saturn.

Check out this Sega Saturn PC, what’s cooler than having a Saturn PC? Having a portable Game Gear PC mini PC, but we are going overboard now.
It even has a modified Sega PC mouse. So awesome! I wouldn’t mind updating Sega Nerds on this.

G-Spot: Is making Golden Axe: Beast Rider a bad idea?
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, Microsoft Xbox 360, Multi-platform, News, Nintendo Wii, Retro, Sony PlayStation 2. Tagged with G-Spot, Golden Axe, Master System, MegaDrive, Saturn, XBLA.

There comes a time in every Sega Nerd’s life when you have to question what Sega is doing with their classic franchises. This could be something as basic as “Why haven’t they made a new game of X, Y or Z.” [X, Y and Z of course being Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and Panzer Dragoon Saga ;o) ]
Or it could be the question - “Is releasing a new game of *blank* actually a good idea, or will it ruin the franchise?” Â
It happened with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, some people ended up loving the game and others berate it for not being similar enough to or as good as the original.
In this case, game *Blank* is Golden Axe: Beast Rider.
There has been a bit of rift amongst gamers and Sega Nerds with the upcoming Golden Axe game. It all first came about, when it was announced that the game would only feature Tyris Flare as a playable character, and none of the other main characters which made the series famous.
But I think people should sit down and have a look back at just what the Golden Axe series actually entails.
Sega Role Playing celebrates Shining Force III’s 10th anniversary
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, Retro. Tagged with Saturn, Shining Force III.

A relatively new, (but quite cool) Sega fansite, which focuses on some of the great Sega RPG games (cunningly named) SegaRolePlaying, is in the process of celebrating the 10th anniversary of Shining Force III.
Shining Force III is known by many Sega Nerds as being one of the greatest SRPGs of all time. It is also well known because Sega/Camelot made the game into three parts, but only Scenario 1 ever made it to western shores, meaning that only the lucky Japanese gamers got the full game.
