Mario & Sonic still kicking ass in UK, Hulk not so much

The juggernaut that is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games continues to roll on in last week’s UK software charts ending on June 21, as the Wii title captured the sixth spot. On the other end of the spectrum, Sega and Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk disappointingly fell to the 36th spot in its second week of release.

Other Sega titles to place in the top 40 are:

21. Iron Man
25. Sega Superstars Tennis
29. Football Manager 2008
37. Sonic and the Secret Rings

It’s pretty amazing that Mario & Sonic is still selling so well in the United Kingdom, better even than any other Nintendo-developed game other than Wii Play. With the way the game is selling, it could very well go down as Sega’s best-selling game of all time. Now wouldn’t that be somethin’?

The UK seems to love a bit of Sega gaming

It seems that Sega has had quite a successful week in the UK All Formats Charts with not one, not four, but three games in the top 10.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is still doing incredibly well, staying up at number 2 - beaten out by Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (much to my personal disgust - I hate the GT games).

Also despite some mixed reviews and opinions among fans/reviewers, Viking: Battle for Asgard is sitting a very respectable 7.

And just released, in Europe, is Condemned 2 - which jumps into the charts at a very cool fifth place.

But it doesn’t all end there Sega Nerds. While making the top 10 is the accolade companies like to aspire to, Sega has another 4 titles making it into the top 40.

Mario & Sonic once again regains top spot in UK

Wii owners in the UK just can’t seem to get enough of the powerful duo that is Mario & Sonic as the game has regained the top spot in the UK’s all-format chart, provided by Chart Track. To date, this is the seventh week for Mario & Sonic at number one.

Additionally, the DS version grabbed the fourth spot, outselling the likes of Army of Two, Bully and Cooking Mama 2.

We’ve said it before, but it’s hard not to continued to be surprised at the game’s success. The scary thing is the game doesn’t appear that it’s slowing down that much as the Wii version’s sales only declined by 22 percent. Here’s to another week at number one!

Yakuza 3 tops Japanese sales charts

One half of Sega Nerds’ forum charts duo, Aki-at, sends us word that Yakuza 3 has just had a very, very successful opening week in Japan. In its opening day, it sold 113,000 copies and ended its first week on retail shelves selling 178,000 copies and placing it atop of this week’s sales charts, according to Famitsu.

Looking back at how the previous two games in the series fared in their opening weeks, puts Yakuza 3 smack dab in the middle. It sold right around 50,000 copies more than Yakuza but is still well under the 281,000 Yakuza 2 reached in its first week debut. However, that’s not a knock on Yakuza 3, though. You have to keep in mind the install base for the PlayStation 2 at the time was considerably larger than what the PlayStation 3 is currently at.

We just hope that with the overwhelming amount of positive press from Western media and the great reception from gamers, Sega will be forced to bring it our way, even with all the possible nonessential cursing.

According to Shinobi, Yakuza 3 (Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!) has sold 113,000 units on its first day of release in Japan. This already exceeds Virtua Fighter 5’s lifetime total. The game has already made a name for itself on the PlayStation 3 top 10 first day sales charts:

  1. Dynasty Warriors 6 170,000 units
  2. Devil May Cry 4 140,000 units
  3. Gundam Musou 117,000 units
  4. Yakuza 3 113,000 units
  5. Winning Eleven 2008 107,000 units
  6. Hot Shots Golf 5 103,000 units
  7. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue 50,000 units
  8. Bladestorm: The Hundred 40,000 units
  9. Disgaea 3 40,000 units
  10. Assassin’s Creed 20,000 units

Let’s hope that Valkyrie of the Battlefield performs well too. Now those of us in the western world wait for Yakuza 2, then hopefully this one.

Mario and Sonic close to predicted sales

YouTube Preview Image

Last year Sega predicted that sales of their controversial (at the time) Mario & Sonic at the Olympics title for the Nintendo DS and Wii would hit the 4 million sales mark.  When it was first suggested, many of you laughed and some even threw insults, but it looks as though the doubters could be proven wrong.

Yes, according to VG Chartz, it looks as though the sales figure of Mario & Sonic, combined on the DS and Wii, is well on its way to hitting the 4 million mark!

What is possibly most impressive is that the Wii version has been on sale since last November (’07) and in just 4 short months has managed to clock up well over 3 million sales.  The DS version was released in January of this year in Japan and the US, but was only released in Europe earlier this month, and has managed to reach sales of over 680,000 units worldwide.

So with a total sales figure in the region of 3.95 million, Mario & Sonic looks set to break Sega’s prediction, especially with this summers upcoming Olympic Games, in Beijing, which is sure to boost sales even further.

Yes the original Sonic the Hedgehogfor our beloved Sega Genesis (aka Megadrive for the UK folks) has made it to the top 10 best selling Xbox Live Arcade Games of 2007. Here is hoping that it has outsold the infamous 3-D bearing the same name.

  1. TMNT 1989 Arcade
  2. Worms
  3. Castlevania: SOTN
  4. UNO
  5. Bomberman LIVE
  6. 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures
  7. Sonic The Hedgehog
  8. Pinball FX
  9. Geometry Wars Evolved
  10. Texas Hold ‘em

I would like to assume that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 took the number 11 spot.

Mario & Sonic outsells Super Mario Galaxy in UK

3:50pm 4 Dec '07

It looks as if the unholy union of Sega and Nintendo is more successful than even we expected, as we learned that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games had the largest sales week of any Wii title ever in the United Kingdom. Yes, that includes Nintendo’s recently released Super Mario Galaxy.

There are no firm sales numbers as of yet, but we’re quite confident it soundly outsold Alien Syndrome, one of Sega’s latest efforts on the Wii. Although there’s no way of telling if it can sustain its momentum or if Mario & Sonic is selling on name alone right now, we have to admit that we’re still surprised to see how well its being received.

Football Manager takes down FIFA, to reach top spot

FM 08 VS FIFA 08

Sega and Sports Interactive have done it once again, they have broken into the number 1 position, on the multi-platform charts, with Football Manager 2008.

According to Spong, Sports Interactive now hold 7 of the Top 10 spots, for biggest launch weeks ever for a PC game, with the other three being claimed by World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, The Sims 2 and Half Life 2.  I knew that Football Manager ‘07 was one of the fastest selling, but I didn’t realise that Sports Interactive had some 5 others under its belt already.

This great news, marks a whole year since Sega have managed to reach the number 1 position, in the multi-platform charts - last hitting pole-position with Football Manager ‘07.  It also meant that Sega beat down the might of EA, knocking FIFA 2008 out of the no.1 spot.

Other noteable games FM’08 held back, include; The Orange Box (Half Life 2), Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Halo 3 and PGR4.

In the words of Borat “Great Success!”
