Wii-Oddoneout

One complaint that comes from Virtual Console players is that the Wiimote is a tad too thin to play your old classics for long periods of time.  Sure it is a nice idea, and an easy way to play the games.  But now with Sega (and the other companies) releasing some truly top reto titles on the Virtual Console, such as Streets of Rage 2, Shining in the Darkness, TJ & Earl Panic on Funkotron, many gamers are starting to think - ”Isn’t there a better way?”  Well now it seems there is!

Someone over at cre.ations.net, known as ’emptyset‘, has come up with a rather decent idea.  If you are playing Megadrive/Genesis titles on your Wii, why not use the official controller?  Well that’s just what he has done.

I was inspired by his hack, and went out and learned to program and use PIC microcontrollers so that I could play the Sega games I enjoyed so much as a child on the Wii’s virtual console with the controller they were designed for. This project is the fruit of my labors, allowing you to use your old Sega genesis controller with the wireless receiver designed by Mark Feldman.

He has managed to create a wireless controller that works with the Wii and can play all those lovely Virtual Console titles, with the ease and comfort of the Megadrive controller.  The article shows you how to make one, and is full of technical jargon that I know nothing about.  So if you are electronically minded and fancy a go at making it that little bit easier to play Streets of Rage on your Wii then check out the full article here.

Wii Laptop

The good great people at Engadget have turned to the console-to-portable genious Ben Heckendorn to turn their already beautiful Nintendo Wii into something quite gorgeous- a (if you haven’t already guessed) Wii Laptop.

This lovely invention was first brought to my attention HERE in our very own forum (Yeah, we do have a forum!) The laptop features all the connections the standard Wii bears- All the GameCube connections (controllers, memory cards, etc …), connection for Wii sensor bar and an AV port for the Wii’s cable to connect to a TV or monitor.

nescast.jpg

You know when some people have too much time on their hands when they start taking the guts out of one system and putting them into another just for the fun of it. I mean, you don’t see people taking baboon hearts and putting them in people do you?

Well, Fig on the arcadecontrols forums has done just that (No, not cut up baboons) by combining two of the greatest consoles ever - a Dreamcast and NES. We call this creation the NEScast.

He didn’t just stop at putting the Dreamcast’s guts into the NES, either. He has also modded NES controllers to work on the NEScast so he can enjoy NES roms from his Dreamcast that looks like an NES. Understand that one?

My only question is if he wanted to play NES games so badly on his NES, why didn’t he just, ya know, play his NES?
