Business Week ran a article on SEGA. Its more of the media gloom and doom that we as SEGA fans are used to hearing from the big media.

Can Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor save Sega?

Then they go on to say

In the last two years, Sega has climbed from 11th to sixth place among third-party publishers in terms of games sold.

Sounds to me like SEGA is doing pretty good. Why start off with something negative then later on the second page state a positive?

Sega is making some uncharacteristic acquisitions. It is primed to release an adventure game based on The Golden Compass

Sega has always been uncharacteristic. This is why we love SEGA. They make moves that no one sees coming and keeps old ideas fresh. Who knew that SEGA would license Micheal Jackson and make a video game about him? What about Starwars arcade?

Well, most of the line-up we have seen at this year’s E3, besides the new Creative Assembly game. It seems that it will be labeled a ‘world exclusive’ . It seems that the rumor we had last time is coming true. Could this be Rome: Total War 2?

SEGA will also have Virtua Fighter 5 playable, much like this year’s E3. But this time you will be able to try out the online mode. Also a worthy note, Golden Axe doesn’t appear anywhere in the line-up.

The rest of the line up is as follows:

New Golden Compass screens released

Sega has recently let slip a few new The Golden Compass gameplay screens for the PS3 and Wii. Apparently, judging from these images, you’ll be able to snowboard on a tree with an armored polar bear.

Wow, now I can cross that off my list of “things to do before I die.”

One thing you can notice, though, in the images with Lyra climbing the fence, there is a stark difference between the PS3 and Wii, from a graphical standpoint. Of course, this is to be expected, but I still thought it was interesting to see screens of the same game from the same viewpoint on the Wii and PS3.

Check out the images below in their original resolution.

After reading what Simon Jeffrey had to say, it doesn’t seem like Sega has any last-minute surprises up its sleeve for E3 2007, but it seems really excited nonetheless.

With 13 games showcased for a variety of platforms, Sega’s billing this year’s showing as its most diverse multi-platform lineup ever.

“Sega’s mission is to publish fun and entertaining games for people wherever and whenever they want to play,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, Sega of America. “For some titles like The Golden Compass we’ll provide a compelling and similar game experience across all the major systems, and for other games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games or NiGHTS we create specific gameplay unique to the capabilities of a platform like the Wii or DS. And with Universe at War we are leading the pack as the first third-party publisher to announce a game that takes advantage of cross platform play between an Xbox 360 and Windows. We are proud to show the world all of these games and more this week at E3.”

Along with the press release, Sega added in seasonal release dates for most of its upcoming lineup and all the games present at E3. Hit the jump for the full release and more information about the games and release dates.

E3 starts tomorrow. Are you ready?

Sega sure is, and the list of games that’ll be shown off at the event is out now. Nothing unexpected in the lineup, though we haven’t received details on many of these titles so far. And maybe Sega has a surprise announcement…?

The Golden Compass: “Making of” video

YouTube Preview Image

Sega recently released a short video showing the behind-the-scenes development process that has gone into creating the movie tie-in videogame, The Golden Compass.

For those that don’t know, The Golden Compass - as it’s known in the US, it’s called The Northern Lights everywhere else (for some unknown reason they changed it for the US release) - is the first book in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy.

Without giving too much away, the first book in the trilogy is set in an alternate dimension to our own, and the story focuses on a young girl named Lyra. Lyra comes from an alternate Oxford (that’s in England, if you don’t know), and one key feature to her dimension are Daemons. Daemons are animals that reflect a persons character, and every human has one. In a way they are almost like a visible part of the soul. Part of her story is about her quest to find her best friend, who is kidnapped by a group of child catchers, but of course she is thrown into a deep and complex plot… The books are actually very good; I can only hope the movie and the game can do them justice.

Well now, here is the ‘making of’ video, showing you clips from the movie and the game. If you haven’t read the books, you may find some of the video a little confusing, but go with it… Although the voice-over makes the story sound like a damn Disney cartoon at one point - please pay no attention to him.

I have to admit that the in-game shots look pretty good to me. I know some of them are early development clips, but the later ones look quite promising. I just hope the gameplay holds up.

The game is due out this December (2007), on Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS and PC… (So basically everything!)

GoldenCompass

Sega-Europe have released a few more screens for their upcoming movie tie-in game, The Golden Compass.  We have been covering the games progress fairly closely here at Sega Nerds, and one think that strikes me, is how underwhelming the games graphics really are.

I know it’s still early days yet, the game is due for release this winter, to coincide with the movie.  But then again, 7 months can fly by pretty darn quickly, when developing games. The images shown here are for the Playstation 3 version of the game (apparently) and I think we can all agree that, in all fairness, the graphics don’t look that ‘next-generation’, do they?

If you were to show me these images and tell me that they were for the PS2 or Wii versions of the game (which are coming) I would easily believe you.  But the PS3, Xbox 360 or PC?

Sure they aren’t terrible, but I don’t see anything here that impresses me.  I just hope that this means that the developers are concentrating more on the gameplay side of things.

IGN has the first look at Sega/Shiny’s game based on the movie ‘The Golden Compass’. You will play as a little girl named Lyra, a shape-shifting Daemon named Pan and an armored Polar Bear called Lorek as they travel across an alternate universe similar to our own, in their quest to find Lyra’s kidnapped friend.

They will each have a unique gameplay style. For example, Lyra has a special item known as an alethiometer, which helps her find out the truth about people that she interacts with.

The game will be out before the movie and features two levels that are exclusive to the game taken from the books.

Sega help you get to know your Daemons

1:49am 8 May '07

As you should all know by now, Sega have the license to the official game of the upcoming movie The Golden Compass.  The game and film are the first part of the trilogy of books by Philip Pullman, though many of you may know the first book by a different name, Nothern Lights (it’s original UK title).

For anyone that doesn’t know about the books or film or (indeed) game, a big part of the story is the presence of Daemons.  Pronounced ‘demons’, one should not confuse these creatures with the evil devil-like minions of the underworld.  No, in fact they are the physical form of the soul in the world of ‘His Dark Materials’ (the trilogys full name).  Humans and Daemons are bound together, and the Daemons take on the forms of animals depending on their human counter-parts personality.  As a child the Daemon can transform depending on the childs mood or emotions, but as they become adults the Daemons take on a single form to represent their companions.

Well now it is your chance to find out what your Daemon would be.  The official site for the movie now has a very cool little feature on it.  You answer a series of questions on your personality, and your Daemon is generated…. but there is a nifty little extra here.  Once your Daemon is ‘born’ you are then given a code and you can put the Daemon on your website, blog or even MySpace account and allow your friends and family to answer similar questions about you - and your Daemon will change appearance depending on their answers….

As you can see I have a monkey for a Daemon.  What will you have?

Edit: I forgot people can change my Daemon…. now it’s a…..

Isn’t Sega ‘Marvel’-lous?

Marveldeal

Sega has now officially expanded their relationship with Marvel Entertainment, adding comic superheroes; Captain America, the Incredible Hulk and Thor to their exclusive multiyear deals, state news site Reuters.com

Sega already announced a deal with Marvel last year, working on the Iron Man game, due for release May 2008, to coincide with the movie release.

Sega say they already have a developer at work on the new ‘Hulk’ title, which is also due in 2008 (June) and should also release along side the upcoming Universal Pictures film starring Edward Norton as David Banner.

Simon Jeffery, president and COO of Sega of America, said all four games will be developed in North America. The “Iron Man” game, which is being developed internally at Sega, is using next-generation technology.

“It’s a collaborative process,” he said. “We work closely with Marvel Studios, with (’Iron Man’ director) Jon Favreau and with the design and FX teams. It is vital that the game feels like the movie; it is being designed primarily on the next-gen gaming systems.”

Marvel worked with Activision on getting the film actors to also supply the voice acting for the Spiderman and X-Men games on the last generation platforms. I think we should also expect Marvel to do the same with the upcoming Sega titles, to help strengthen the bond between the films and games.

In case you didn’t know, Sega also struck deals with other movie companies and are developing/producing titles for the upcoming Golden Compass game, due out this November along with the New Line Cinema movie. Sega also have two titles based on the Alien movie franchise under development. One we know is an FPS and the other is still a bit ‘hush-hush’ right now. Still not done, Sega had the rights to make the offical games for the ‘Charlottes Web’ movie (released last year), which was based on a popular childrens book.
