Ghost Squad Wii

Anyone who has frequented arcades in the last 3 or 4 years should know the name “Ghost Squad,“   it has been one of Sega’s most popular arcade titles, in recent years, with a new version Ghost Squad Evolution being released (in Europe at least) last year.

Ghost Squad is pretty much a typical arcade lightgun game.  You hold a large plastic assault rifle, point at the screen, and squeeze the trigger when gormless enemies popup on screen.  The game sets you as a member of an elite Special Forces unit known as (guess what?) ‘GHOST Squad.’  Basically you are sent into different missions to eliminate terrorist threats and foil hostage situations; you know the typical day job for any crack unit.

Yeah the story behind the game is pretty cliché, and it’s really not much deeper than that paragraph I just used to describe it.  But then again, how many arcade games really have deep involving story lines?  With arcades, it’s all about quick, easy, fun gameplay.

But we aren’t talking about the arcade version of the game, it’s the new Wii version we are speaking about.  Can Sega replicate the hit arcade game for Nintendo’s Wii?

GAME SEGA

For those of you who don’t know (which would be most people outside the UK), GAME is the UK’s leading video games store.

Just like any typical gaming store, they cater for all areas of gaming, including Sega Nerds now, it seems.

On the home page to the GAME website, (at the time of writing this), there is a clear icon down the right hand column, which leads to a Sega specific area - shown in screendump below.

ATEI 2008 Earl’s Court

A couple of days ago, I informed you all, that I (which would ultimately mean Sega Nerds) would be attending the ATEI 2008 show.

The whole show is dedicated to the different sides of gaming, which includes Slot machines, Pinball machines, Quiz machines and even money counting equipment (for casinos, I would presume).  But most importantly, for us, the show also focuses upon Arcade machines.

First things first, before I get onto reviewing the line up of games that Sega had on show, I should point out that this years ATEI felt very different to that of last years.  Well different for Sega, at least.

Angelina Jolie bought her nephew Ghost Squad and got it sent back according to Star Magazine.

[Brad's sister] Julie was shocked when Angie sent her children the commando-style video game Ghost Squad. According to a family insider, Julie and her husband Rob sent it back with a note that read, “We don’t promote violence in our home.”

Oh, thats not even the good part of the article. The best part was when Jolie said shes training Maddox to be the next Shinobi.

Angelina was not pleased. “She was really angry,” the insider reveals. “She thinks it’s normal and part of being a kid. She even bought Maddox a knife-throwing set and is encouraging him to learn to throw knives!”

Nights Wii

Sega has set out several release dates for upcoming games, in Q1 2008.

On the cards is NiGHTS Journey of Dreams, for the Wii (Finally!).  Which is now set for a January 18th release, although several online stores, including GAME, still date it for release on the 25th.  Also set for January 18th is Ghost Squad.

Yet Universe at War: Earth Assualt, has been pushed forward slightly, to a January 25th release, which is actually in place of PSU expansion, Ambition of Illuminus (originally scheduled for 25th), which is now confirmed for a week later.

Released on Febuary 8th, we should see the highly anticipated The Club, plus the DS version of Mario and Sonic Olympics.

Bad news is that Condemned 2: Bloodshot, has been pushed back by two weeks, originally set for a Febuary release, it is now due on March 14th.  Also the game has undergone a slight name change, and the subtitle, “Bloodshot,” has been removed.

PS2 and Wii racer Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity follows on the 22nd, and February 28th sees Bleach hit Wii and DS.

Dated for March 28th, we have Viking Battle for Asgard, and also Sega SuperStars Tennis.

Sega Deals: Ghost Squad for $20

ghost-squad.jpgThere’s only a few short days before Christmas, and what better gift to give a loved one than a Sega game, right? Well, if that’s the case, may we suggest Ghost Squad at Amazon for the low price of $20?

Ghost Squad happens to be one of the only lightgun shooters currently available on the Wii, and it’s actually pretty damn good, too. And for only $20, it really is a no-brainer.

Buy it here!

Wii Ghost Squad sounding pretty good

CVG, just posted up a copy, of the import-review, from NGamer, for Ghost Squad, (Got all that? Good).  And from the sounds of it, the game should be pretty darn sweet.

I have been a pretty big fan of the game for a while, playing it many times, in many Arcades.  I was also lucky enough to get my hands on the Wii version at TGS, though what I played was the TGS demo, and not the full game.  But what I experienced was good.

And from the report featured in NGamer, the full version sounds like it’s going to be an arcade treat, in your home.

Of course, nobody does great arcade conversions any more, because nobody makes great arcade games. Or so we thought until we spent some time with Ghost Squad on Wii and discovered just what an insanely addictive, stupidly satisfying game it really is.

Ghost Squad marked down to 30 dollars

Even if this is only from Gamestop website, looks like its going to be the offical price. Too close to the release date to just be a mistake. Plus before it was 39.99.

I think releasing this game in a budget price is a fabulous idea by SEGA. We have already heard sites saying its only about 30 minutes long and the graphics don’t look very sleek. Would I buy this game for 50 dollars? Not in the winter. Too many good games draining my pockets. But for 30 dollars, most definitely.

TGS07: Ghost Squad hands-on impressions

Ghost Squad

One game I’m really excited about, has got to be Ghost Squad.  I love the arcade version, which I have played a ton of over the last few years.  I’d say it’s one of my favourite light-gun games, definitely one of the best in recent years.  So I was very happy to see the new Wii version of Ghost Squad up and running at this years TGS.

Unlike the last few titles I spoke about, Ghost Squad did not have a large, impressive booth to help show it off.  No sir, clearly Sega knew that the name of the title alone could sell the game… or maybe they just don’t care as much for the game. {The latter is most probably true}

There was a small area in the ‘Sega Zone,’ at TGS, which was home to several games, on multiple consoles, and this is where Ghost Squad was, between Doreamon and Miburi & Teburi- both Wii games.  Sega had just one Wii setup for Ghost Squad, though this is quite sad (for me), the queues were quite small for the game, so Sega know their audience.

TGS 2007: Day one overview

TGS Big sega sign

Well hello there fellow Sega Nerdians.  It is I Graham, and I have just finished for the day at Tokyo Game Show.

It was a worrying time for a while, as we were told at one point we wouldn’t be allowed Press Passes this year (another sucky thing about not being paid for this job!).  However, I managed to use my cunning, guile and my amazing charms to get myself tickets for all 4 days.  So after flashing my collection of thongs at the lady, and blinding her, I managed to nab a pass, and got into the show.

Right now, I’m incredibly tired and hungry - walking around for some 9 hours definitely wears a hole in your socks!  So because of this, I have decided to give you guys a very quick overview of my experiences today.  A quick guide to some of the games I played, and some brief impressions.

But do not worry, over the next couple of days, I shall definitely be bringing you the goods, with plenty of videos, pictures and honest opinions on the upcoming games from Sega, plus some big games from some other companies - and a few smaller ones.

What did I see/do today?
