Review: Samba De Amigo

Despite receiving a generally good reception on the Dreamcast from magazines, websites and the gaming community, Samba De Amigo perhaps didn’t sell quite as well as Sega (and all Sega Nerds) had hoped for.

However, Sega has seen some light and decided to release an updated version of the Dreamcast classic on the Wii.  But, is this new version as equally fun as the original game?  Or has Sega made a cock-up trying to release it on the Wii? 

Sega Europe gives away iPod Nanos in two Samba De Amigo contests

That’s right, Sega Europe has launched not one, not three, but two contests to help celebrate the release of Samba De Amigo.

The first contest is being held on the official European Samba sites (minus Italy, for some reason).  Entrants need to answer a multiple choice question, regarding gaming’s favourite simian percussionist to win a funky, little iPod Nano.

Yes, it’s Friday the 26th of September, and Samba De Amigo has now been released in stores across Europe, which means that the game is now available in the United States as well. I also thought it was out in Japan today too, but looking at Play Asia, they only have the U.S. version listed…. Oh well.

So, what does this mean? It means that you should all go out and buy a copy!

It is your duty as a Sega Nerd to make sure that a fun, unique game gets a fair go. Yeah, it may not he quite the same appeal as the Dreamcast original, with the cool maracas to swing about, but seeing as not enough people bought the original, we are lucky that Sega is giving us a second chance.

So we should go and buy the Wii version, grab some friends, start shaking our asses to some funky beats, get a little sweaty, take a group shower and then all go and play some Samba!!

Sexy Samba trailer

Yep it’s another Samba De Amigo trailer, ready for the imminent release of the game (well it’s out in Europe this Friday).  But this new trailer is a little different to the others we have seen over the past few months.  Yes it still shows the game screen and people waving their arms around, holding Wiimotes, like possessed fiends. 

However the people featured in this trailer are not small children, or old men.  Nor is there a monkey (boo! We want more monkeys!), but there are two skantily-clad ladies, that would even make Princess Leia blush, with their sparkling bikinis and feathery head-dresses.

Hurrah! It’s another Samba trailer

Will the stream of new Samba trailers ever stop?  Well not until after the game releases, I’m sure.  But who cares?  They are fun.

The new trailer entitled “Friends” shows some young kids playing the game, having fun like friends do.  But if you are not into the whole camaraderie thing, then watch for the monkey doing some funky breakdancing at the end :o)

[Update: It seems that Sega/Gearbox were none too happy about someone leaking their Aliens teaser trailer, and have taken it down.  Well quite rightly so really.  It was naughty of that person to record it - but at least we were able to show some of you the trailer before it was removed] 

Apparently guests at the Gearbox party, in Dallas last week, were treated to early plays of Samba De Amigo, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, listening to the lyrical genius of DJ Jazzy Jeff (hey, he was great in the Fresh Prince!), plus they were shown a teaser trailer for Aliens Colonial Marines.

According to Kotaku this trailer is similar (or the same) to one shown on the run up to E3 this year, so there is a chance some of you might have seen it.  However, for those that haven’t… well just look above and it’s there for you.

Unfortunately the video was taken directly at the Gearbox party - so the quality isn’t the best. 

Even though it looks like FMV from the game, it still looks pretty cool to me.  The trailer certainly seems to convey some of the atmosphere from the movies.  Let’s just hope the rest of the game can do the same!

New Samba trailers, Ulala action and maraca information

Sega Europe has released a couple of new Samba trailers online. The first is “Gameplay Trailer #2″ and shows some more in-game footage - including a Space Channel 5 level, with Ulala and Amigo shaking their funky stuff in space (well on a space station… in space).

With the launch of Samba De Amigo getting ever closer, Sega Europe has released a couple of new trailers online.

The first of the two, the Retailer Trailer, is similar to the original trailer they released some time ago - which can also be seen at the start of the Samba Mini Game. 

But it’s not exactly the same trailer, as it is using different angles for one thing, and also shows more in-game footage.  It is, however, the same family and (more importantly) the same monkey as the original trailer. 

Man, I love monkey’s.

Play the Samba De Amigo online mini game now

In celebration of the upcoming Samba De Amigo, on the Wii, Sega Europe has put up this rather funky little mini game for all to play online.

Best of all, they have let us embed the game here on Sega Nerds (well the option is there for everyone, not just us).  The game is just a little taster of the rhythm-based fun to expect from the real console game.

As the embedded game auto-plays, I have put it after the break, to preserve the sanity of visitors to the site.  But I encourage everyone to give it a try, it’s a lot of fun.
