Sega Deals: Alien Syndrome PSP $10 at EBgames.com

If you’ve recently played Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer and have been yanking your hair out in frustration, you might think about trying a much easier, albeit equally bad game instead. EBGames is currently selling Alien Syndrome for the PSP for only $10.

I actually had the displeasure in reviewing the title, and I can honestly say it’s not very good. However, for only $10, it might interest a few Sega Nerds out there who just don’t have a lot to play right now.

Review: Alien Syndrome (PSP)

First off, let me apologize for this ridiculously late review. It seems the U.S. Air Force doesn’t quite share in the importance of Sega Nerds that we do as they sent me to South Korea for the last several weeks. I can’t reveal what I did there since it’s super secret Air Force stuff, but I’ll make sure to shed a little light during next week’s Nerdcast.

Now with that out of the way, let’s finally get on with this damn review.

As you may or may not know, Alien Syndrome is a remake of the classic ’80s coin-op. Released on the PSP in July, Alien Syndrome is yet another classic title that Sega’s handed the reigns to a small-time developer; this time it’s Totally Games’ turn. Poised with such a mighty task, do the little guys come through?

Unlock harder difficulty modes in Alien Syndrome

While we’re still waiting on our Alien Syndrome review copies at Sega Nerds HQ, I’m sure everyone else is having the time of their lives with Sega’s alien shoot ‘em up.

But if you’ve already played and beaten the game and are looking for something else to do, I have some good news for you - by beating the game on a difficulty level, it will unlock the next harder level.

I know these are kinda lame considering most games come with these options from the get go, but hey, it’s better than nothing, right? Or is it?

PSP or WII? We’ll never tell… :3

Alien Syndrome is out today for the Wii and PSP. If you remember we had a little bit of conflict in the past when a certain someone compared the two versions of the game and held the PSP version to have superior graphics. Well, now’s your chance to put your money where your mouth is, Wii fanboys. Or PSP fanboys! We’re not the discriminating type here at Sega Nerds. In any case, this top-down run-and-gun ought to provide a little fun for you and three of your buddies.

Next round of Sega titles dated for Europe

German videogame site Gamefront has confirmed the release date for the rest of this year’s announced Sega titles:

Although North American gamers already have a good idea when Alien Syndrome and Crazy Taxi will release, these release dates give us a good indication when the rest of the games will be released here, as well.

I still can’t wait to see more on Mario & Sonic, and no Graham, this game has no chance in hell in outselling Halo 3. I’m sorry, but it ain’t happening.

Alien Syndrome site

One of the least talked-about Sega titles coming to your stores this year has to be Alien Syndrome, coming to the PSP and Wii this July.

But that doesn’t hinder those chaps at Sega, who have been working hard on setting up the official website for the game. The site, naturally, shows us what to expect from the game, offering gameplay footage, images, details and news.

Quite frankly, I am quite impressed by the site. Sega has tried to make it like a comic book, and done pretty darn well, in my opinion. It looks good and it has certainly captivated my interest in the game.

Honestly, since it was announced earlier this year, I have not been bothered by the game. I never found the original too appealing, and this sort of game looks a tad dated for my liking. But now my feelings may have changed. I think, if the price is right, the game could be a bit of a sleeper hit. Offering some (pretty much) mindless alien killing with full 4 player co-op mode - by ‘full’ I mean you can play through the entire single player campaign with up to 4 players. The only thing missing would be online support. God knows the Wii could do with a half-decent online multiplayer game, and I think this would have been perfect for the job, but by the looks of it the multiplayer will be local only - at least the site doesn’t specify any online mode.

I would suggest checking out the site even if you have little enthusiasm in the game. Watching the videos has made me consider buying the game, just for the pure mindless killing pleasure.

Sega Deals: Alien Syndrome (Wii) $29 at Buy.com

Posted by Chris. Filed under Chris, News, Nintendo Wii. Tagged with , .

070707ali.jpgWhether it ships with less than stellar graphics or not, $30 for Alien Syndrome on the Wii is a deal few Sega Nerds can afford to pass up. Right now, Buy.com is offering Sega’s remake for only $29 shipped with a July 31 release date.

There’s a good chance this is a price mistake as Gamestop has it listed for the normal new release price of $50. Heck, Buy.com has the PSP version still priced at $39 with an Aug. 1 release date.

And to get Alien Syndrome for $19, be sure to use Google Checkout offer with details listed on the page. You can purchase the game here.

Alien Syndrome’s PSP box art revealed

Although Alien Syndrome’s in-game graphics may not be overly impressive, its box art certainly is as it features protagonist Aileen Harding about to unleash all sorts of hell on some alien scum.

While Totally Games has made it a point to stay “true” to the classic, the developers have also strived to flesh it out, as well. They’ve kept the same action-packed gameplay but have also added in RPG elements like choosable character classes and Aileen’s stats will increase as she gains experience.

No RPG can be without some sort of companion that tags along, and Alien Syndrome has that, as well. She’ll have a robot bravely fighting by her side that can also improve your weapons and armor. It’s good to actually have a companion worth a damn for a change.

Alien Syndrome will hit the PSP and Wii in July.

Alien Syndrome producer starts blogging

6:33pm 4 May '07

It seems like blogs are taking over the entire interwebs. Nearly everyone I know has one., and now Alien Syndrome Associate Producer, Andy Alamano, has started his own blog at 1up.com.

In his first post, Alamano, who also produced the excellent Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, says Alien Syndrome is currently in the beta stage, and Totally Games is now putting the finishing touches on it.

Alamano, or AndyTron as he goes by on 1up, wrote that while the development team wanted to stay true to the classic title, but they wanted to throw in some RPG elements, too. Alien Syndrome will break new genre grounds. It’s not an RPG or a shooter, it’s both - an shooter RPG. Pretty nifty, eh?

He said the best way to look at Alien Syndrome is a combination of Smash TV and Diablo. Hell, if Totally Games can capture the amazing gameplay from both titles into one game, I’m sold like a $3 whore on a Friday night.

Lastly, he wrote that after Alien Syndrome, he’ll be moving on to a few comic-book games, most likely Iron Man or the recently-announced Marvel trio.

You can read Alamano’s blog here.
