First Impressions: The Conduit - multiplayer

Those of you who follow our Twitter feed should be already be aware that I was invited to the Sega Europe offices last Friday to have a go on the multiplayer modes of High Voltage Software’s highly anticipated FPS, The Conduit.
Without much of an introduction to the game, we were flung head first into the action. I guess the best way to teach kids to swim is to chuck them into water and see how fast they sink/float - and that method certainly seemed to work with all of us there.
Eurogamer grabs a preview of Mario and Sonic Winter Olympics

Or to give it the full (and proper) title, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games - rolls off the tongue nicely doesn’t it?
Anyway, those lucky sods over at Eurogamer not only got an early preview of the upcoming Mario and Sonic title but they were also flown out to Vancouver, where the next Winter Olympics is bing held, to play the damn thing! Last I checked there were Wii’s available to play with in Europe… (yeah I’m jealous).
The good news is that they didn’t get to play all the events in the game - huzzah (ok, I’ll stop being a jealous douche now). Sega treated them to four events on the Wii and two on the DS version of the game.
From the sounds of it the game is showing some real promise and Sega has taken on board some of the niggling issues players had with the original Mario and Sonic outing.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games scans

Here we have the first screenshots for both the DS and Nintendo Wii versions of the games. For Sonic fans (or Mario) looking to see if there have been new characters announced in the game, don’t hold your breath. Sega is not revealing those yet.
What made me angry about the article is the little jabs they take at Sega, sure it is a Nintendo magazine. Like there is a screenshot of Knuckles snowboarding and it says “Sega, please, less crummy Sonic characters this time.” What?! Are they implying that Knuckles is a “crummy” character? Sega fans are also warned to skip the last page, pretty much ‘Mario games are superior to Sonic games, fact!!!’ sort of time line.
Hit the jump for the scans and thank Revenge Of Joe Musashi from the forums for scanning them!
EGM’s behind the screens on Phantasy Star IV
Posted by George. Filed under George, Preview, Retro. Tagged with EGM, Flash Back, Phantasy Star IV.

We are going to take a groovy trip back to 1993, when arcades where still alive in the USA and people wore brightly colored shirts. Back then when Sega was working on Phantasy Star IV for the Sega Genesis, EGM took a trip to Japan to check out the development.
Now that EGM got bought out and everyone fired, the internet seems to have them on their mind. I don’t blame them I used to read EGM growing up, big part of American video gaming. So its nice of camineet from NeoGaf post this up, since I like reading old Sega magazine articles.
This is the part where we ask for a new Phantasy Star RPG, but the team has stated that they wanted this to be the last one and I can respect their wishes. Though I wouldn’t mind seeing the team do a new RPG!

Hands On: Phantasy Star Zero - offline mode
Posted by George. Filed under George, Japan, Nintendo DS, Preview. Tagged with Hands on, Phantasy Star Zero, Preview.

I started playing Japanese version of Phantasy Star Zero the other day and thought I’d post some of my impressions here on Sega Nerds. I can’t really talk about the story, due to not knowing Japanese, so this isn’t really a review, even if it is the retail product.
This hands on is only on the single player game, I’ll do a online impression in a few days, so sit tight for that.
The Conduit video preview

G4TV’s X-Play has been lucky enough to get an exclusive preview of High Voltage Software’s upcoming Wii FPS, The Conduit. The video shows off a lot of gameplay footage, as well as the game’s producer, Josh Morton, explaining elements of the game and the way it is controlled.
The game does seem to be shaping up pretty well, though I’m still not entirely convinced by the visuals. I know the Wii isn’t going to be able to produce Far Cry 2 quality graphics, but the developer has been saying how the new ‘Quantum 3′ engine will be able to produce effects never thought possible on the Wii, but so far I have seen other Wii games do just as well, and some with better graphics.
Still, graphics don’t make a game and the gameplay looks like it could be enjoyable, which is the main thing. Hopefully we will be able to get some hands-on time in the new year with this title.
But if you guys want to play, then don’t forget that Sega will be showing the game off at the New York Comic Con in Feb 2009.

Hands-on preview: House of the Dead: Overkill
Posted by Graham. Filed under Europe, G, News, Nintendo Wii, Preview. Tagged with Hands on, Headstrong Games, House of the Dead, Overkill.

The more observant of you might have noticed my little Twitter message (see right-hand column on site), so hopefully some of you will have seen this coming.
Earlier this week, Sega Nerds was invited by those sexy chaps at Sega Europe to get some hands-on time with the upcoming Wii-exclusive House of the Dead: Overkill.
Unfortunately, as the game is still in development, I wasn’t able to play a full version. Instead my hands-on time was spent with a specially made demo, which contained just the second level from the game - Bayou County General Hospital.
While Overkill is the latest installment in the franchise, the game is actually a prequel to the original Arcade and Saturn title. Because of this earlier setting, developer Headstrong Games has opted to give the title a cheesy 1970’s horror movie vibe, complete with film grain effects, bad acting and some wonderfully over-the-top voice-overs.
Valkyria Chronicles: In-depth, hands-on preview

We were fortunate enough to get our hands on the Japanese version of the soon-to-be-released Valkyria Chronicles a while back, but since it didn’t have English subtitles, you can imagine the difficulty we had trying to understand anything going on.
Fortunately for us, and for you, Sega of Europe recently invited us to come to their offices for an extended gaming session of the English version.
Rather than focus too much on the gameplay aspects, which we have covered previously, and you can find out on any of the Japanese reviews, we are going to delve into some of the finer aspects of the game.
Samba De Amigo (Wii) hands-on impressions

~To help show off the way the game is played Sega asked us to record our footage showing both the screen and people playing - which is something they have said to every other site. Â Â So apologies of the angle is bit weird, we had no one else to hold the camera - so had to prop it up on a cupboard, with my jumper… and some cake~
~And yes, I am the one with the stupid hat on~
SGD08: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood hands on
Posted by George. Filed under George, Nintendo DS, North America, Preview. Tagged with event, Hands on, SGD08, Sonic Chronicles.

If anyone fights over what they think Sonic should be, it’s definitely Sonic fans. I swear, he has some of the most passionate fans on the planet. However, I’m not going to judge Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood as a Sonic game. I mean, I already knew it wasn’t going to be fast!
So does a turn-based RPG work with Sonic characters?
