The other day we showed you a couple of images from the now cancelled Aliens RPG.  However, apparently a lot more concept art was released on the Obsidian forums about a month ago, just no one reported on it/ realised it.

But here it all is now, including a rather freaky looking ‘Red Queen’ (above):

Concept artwork for the Aliens RPG has just leaked out on the net.  As you could expect from such weird looking concepts for the Aliens, the fans have already started to complain.

Obsidian Entertainment no longer working on Aliens RPG

Awhile back we ran a rumor that the Aliens RPG was dead, it seems that the rumors are true. An admin over at the Obsidian forum has confirmed our worse nightmares, the title is no longer in development.

“it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development.”

I guess we shouldn’t be too sad, since there is going to be plenty of Alien games coming out next year, though I wish all of them weren’t shooters. I was very excited in playing a horror Space RPG set in the Aliens universe. At least we still have Alpha Protocol, which is set to release in October of this year.

Sega have also made a comment, confirming that the game is no longer in production.

“”At this point, SEGA has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG,”

Well, developer and publisher have confirmed the rumors, so now we can move on. Even though I might be disappointed by the news, I’m glad they actually came out and confirmed it was canceled, unlike other Sega games that just disappear.

Empire: Total War soundtrack coming out June 30th

9:24am 26 Jun '09

If you where one of the million gamers that can’t get enough Empire: Total War, well you might be in luck. Sumthing Else Music Works has announced that they will be releasing the Empire: Total War soundtrack, in both physical and digital copies. The retail version will be sold through sumthing.com, while the digital version will be up at sumthingdigital.com and iTunes.

Richard Beddow, the composer and producer for the soundtrack put in a ton of work and thought into how to get the music just right.

“Undertaking the challenge of the music production for Empire: Total War was no simple task,” said composer Richard Beddow. “The game needed music to convey its size and breadth, covering the various countries at war, delicately accompanying campaign gameplay and underpinning the various cinematics and events in the game.”

The games music was performed by The Slovak National Symphony Orchestra at the Slovak Radio Concert Hall in Bratislava. Got to say, I love that Creative Assembly games get soundtrack releases in the west. Can we now ask for a Valkyria Chronicles soundtrack (outside of Japan)?

The PC version of SEGA Rally is being sold for just 89 pence! If you just want to buy the game on it’s own, you will need to throw in a couple of extra £’s for postage.  However, if you buy a couple of other things, and bring your overall price to over £5, then shipping is free!

In fact if you are really into your Sega Rally games and own a Dreamcast (as well as PC), you should be able to buy the three main console/PC titles; Sega Rally (1995), Sega Rally 2 and SEGA Rally for just £5.47!  Bloody bargain.

Sega: Three Aliens titles still planned, plus DS Colonial Marines

5:05pm 15 Jun '09

Even though it has been strongly rumoured that both Aliens: Colonial Marines and Aliens RPG have been canned, our favourite company has confirmed that there will be a trio (with AvP included) of Aliens titles coming out.  Speaking to Joystiq Sega said:

Aliens vs. Predator will be the first to ship out of our triplet of Aliens titles; hence it was shown at this year’s E3. We’ll have more news to share about the other two games in the near future so stay tuned.”

The rumours of Aliens RPG being canned have been around for a while now and there has been some evidence to support the title’s scappage - with little to no game details since the first announcement and also the C.V. from an ex-Obsidian (the developer) employee.  But from the sounds of it we will still a fair amount of Aliens love from Sega.

Plus good news for you Alien-loving DS owners.  We recently stumbled upon the footage of an unreleased Aliens title for the DS.  The footage claimed to be from Aliens: Colonial Marines, but it had us all puzzled because Sega hadn’t ever announced the title.  So we (and other sites) naturally assumed that the title had been cancelled early in production.

But it seems that is not the case; the footage we saw is legitimate and the game hasn’t been cancelled, it’s still in development.  Speaking to Kotaku, Gearbox Software President Randy Pitchford said that the DS title is in development, but is not being directly handled by Gearbox instead it is being developed by WayForward Technologies.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Aliens RPG comes out, considering Obsidian has seen layoffs this year, is working on Alpha Protocol and recently announced that they are working on another title too.

Alpha Protocol sees some E3 awards

10:18am 15 Jun '09

As well as Bayonetta receiving some E3 award love, Alpha Protocol has gained some accolades from the gaming press.  Both GamingExcellence and MTV have awarded Alpha Protocol with two awards.

GamingExcellence awarded Alpha Protocol with the “Best Role Playing Game” beating; Borderlands, Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect 2:

Alpha Protocol eschews many of the elements that have traditionally been part of RPG’s. Casting aside turn based combat and combat percentages this is almost more of a third person shooter with role-playing elements added on. However the deep character and equipment customization options, as well as the dynamically branching conversation systems, set this game above almost all other games shown at E3 this year. With plentiful characters that you can befriend or fight at your leisure the game seems set to provide a unique experience with every play through. If you’re looking for a solid game that seamlessly blends intense action and deep role-playing into one bundle then this is a game that you will want to keep your eyes on.
