German Sonic fans get their “Chess on”

Yeah, I think most of us think “Why can’t Sonic go back to the good old days?”  Well a German company has done just that - but gone back to the really good old days, and re-invented Sonic as a Chess game.

German game maker, Gaya Entertainment, is set to release a new officially licensed Sonic Chess game.  The pieces are made from PVC, between 5cm - 7cm in height. The board is 47cm x 47cm and has been designed with the Green Hill Zone orange and brown checkered pattern - rather than the classic white and black of normal Chess boards.

The Chess pieces have all been (naturally) replaced with a Sonic-related theme, and thankfully they have strayed away from the most annoying characters.  Sonic takes on the role of King, Amy his Queen, Knuckles the Bishop, Tails’ is the Knight/Horsie, leaving Chaos Emeralds as the Castles/Rook.  Plus one of the most iconic symbols of Sonic games comes in too, Rings are used in place of Pawns.

Yep, no Werehog or Shadow in this game, which should please Sonic fans (take note Sega!).  Gaya Entertainment plans to release the Sonic Chess set in Feb/March 2009 for 39.99 Euros.

That’s not the chaos emerald it is the master emerald!

2nd this is horrible and very unplayable, both sides are identical, the checkerboard isn’t the only thing that is suppose to have color diffrence, both sides have to look diffrent from one another.

At this point we could have tonally variated Sonic Heroes on the other side, or Robotnik, Rogue, Shadow etc.

@cube_b3
If you look at the bases of the characters on both sides one side has a lighter yellow/golden color while the other has a darker browner color (reflecting the checkered pattern on the chess board).

I expect them to confuse Packistan.

Job well done.

I would really like to get this honestly.

Though, no Robotnik and the fastest thing alive as the hardest piece to move does not make too much sense.

Also, *add quote making fun of Cube here*.

Do want.
I hope it somehow gets a US release or something.
Doubt that.
But do want.

It’s a neat idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the reasons why have been commented on already: Sonic’s the piece with the least movement capability; both sides are nearly identical in appearance, and so on.

Sweet. I’d rather see a Robotnik ‘team’ sort of deal against Sonic, but hey, both ideas are awesome. That’s going to cost a pretty penny to import to the US. I once imported Tomb Raider: the Cradle of Life (HDDVD) from Germany and it cost over $66.00 AND I had to ship it to England first!

I saw this exact thing in a Detroit-area mall about 5 years ago. I really wanted it then, but haven’t seen any evidence of its existence until now. Weird.
