Fan releases NiGHTS into Dreams Beta to all

There is a strong chance that some of you have already seen this, downloaded it, played it, bought the t-shirt and are now planning a movie - as the source says it was originally posted a month ago, on November 27th.  But it has only just been brought to our attention, and in case some of you have missed it, here we go:

Just over a year ago, one plucky member (and a name many of you might recognise) from the fansite NiD.com, TRAViS, bought the holy grail of NiGHTS products, the original NiGHTS into Dreams Beta disc.

From what I understand the disc cost a small fortune, and was something that practically broke the NiGHTS fan’s bank.  But like all strong willed fanatics (God bless them) he still went ahead and bought what he could not quite afford.

Yuji Naka talks about leaving Sega and making Prope

In a interview with Gamasutra, Yuji Naka talks about why he left Sega and how he got around to making his new studio called Prope. Apparently he had a high position in Sega where he didn’t really get involve with making games, just overseeing. This is possibly the first time I heard someone complain about wanting to be demoted.

“Really, if you’re a game creator, no matter how high a position you have in the industry, you need to keep creating.”

He also says he wants to make “Let’s” type games into a series, if they sell well enough. But what about a platforming game?

What is Sega’s Mitsuyoshi up to?

Takenobu Mitsuyoshi has been writing arcade music for a while, having worked on music for classics like Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter, and contributed to the soundtrack in Shenmue. Apparently, he has been doing vocals for a Sega sound team known as “H.,” and has been in both “EXTRA Hyper Game Music Events” held in Tokyo.

Now GameSetWatch has a interview (yes, it’s in English) with Takenobu Mitsuyoshi about what it’s like performing live and making music for Sega. You can find the interview here.

Let’s Tap debuts with weak sales in Japan

3:23pm 24 Dec '08

Let’s Tap debuted selling only 5,400 copies . It is obvious that Sega is selling the game in the totally wrong market, there are no penguins in Japan!

The chart started on December 15th and ended on December 21st. Let’s Tap came out on the 18th, so if my math is correct (brings up a calculator) that is four days of sales counted. So is that bad?

Two other Wii games released by Sega on the 18th also include Sonic Unleashed and Bleach: Versus Crusade. The Bleach game did a modest 15,000 copies, while the blue blur sat a bit above Let’s tap with 5,800 copies. Solution? Add Bleach characters to both games, instant sales boost.

OutRun Online Arcade to come as early as January?

7:21am 24 Dec '08

When Sega announced OutRun Online Arcade, for XBLA and PSN recently, the only details of the release date given were “early 2009.”  In terms of gaming that could pretty much mean anywhere as late April/May 2009, which would be annoying - though I guess not as bad as having to wait a whole year.

But good news, it seems that Sega is planning to release the game as early as January 2009!  According to Siliconera, the above image shows a promotional poster from last week’s Asia Game Show, and while it is a little blurry here, Siliconera say that the poster states a Janauary release (I think it’s the bit next to the Sega logo).

I have no reason to doubt Siliconera myself, and if this is true then great news - we only have to wait about 4/5 more weeks (at the most) until the game is released!

More Sega classics on the way to XBLA and PSN?

6:34pm 23 Dec '08

According to IGN, several Mega Drive titles have popped up on the ESRB website.  Namely, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II and Gunstar Heroes are said to be listed on the site.

As of yet, no release date or pricing has been confirmed.  But if these games are going to be released on both XBLA and PSN then I have just one question; What the hell is Sega playing at?!

All four of the titles have been available on the Wii’s Virtual Console for a while now, and three of the four titles are going to be available on the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection - which is being released for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well.

The pricing for Mega Drive titles on XBLA is normally around the £5 mark, but the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection will no doubt be around the £30-£40 price range, but will contain 40 Mega Drive titles (plus extras).  Surely anyone with half a brain can work out that buying the collection is a much better deal.

I just don’t get why Sega seems intent on releasing games several times, for the same platforms.  Surely it would be much more advisable to release other Mega Drive titles not featured on the upcoming collections pack?

Still good news I guess if you really just want to play Sonic 3 on its own, and don’t want any of the other top games featured in the collection, like the Shining Force titles, Streets of Rage or Vectorman etc…

Sonic and the Black Knight box art

5:35am 23 Dec '08

Posted by George. Filed under George, Nintendo Wii, North America. Tagged with , .

Sega of America has just posted up the American box art for the upcoming Sonic and the Black Knight. I have to say, it’s way better than the Sonic Unleashed box art.

First thing you will obviously notice is the bottom right hand corner, Sega will now proudly label these games ‘Sonic Storybook Series’. Just in cause you didn’t know, its on the cover, don’t mistake it with the “other” Sonic games!
