It seems the creator of the cult Dreamcast classic (and a game I am yet to play), Seaman and (for the PS2) Seaman 2, Yoot Saito is creating a quasi-spinoff of the series on the iPhone, entitled Gabo.

Not many details have come out yet, but the game appears to be using a similar character to that of Seaman 2, a caveman/monkey person and instead of talking to the ’seaman,’ players use the iPhone’s touch screen to interact with it.

I’m not sure if this game is actually being published or developed by any Sega team though.  The news originallly came from Yoot’s own personal blog, in the form of some truly awful broken English translation.

It seems the game will be released in Japan first, but Yoot confirms that there are plans for a worldwide release.  Hurrah!

One last thing to do: “Gabo, Gabo! GABO!”  (Simpsons fans should appreciate that).

One step backward, Yoot Saito? There is no mention of voice-recognition so that the player can verbally communicate with the creature. I would rather have the original Seaman be ported to the iPhone, actually. The original was great fun.

There was a Seaman 2 now? I guess it’s time to visit eBay.

And Graham, you should play it. It’s the craziest virtual pet you’ll ever own. You can actually have a conversation with him!

I like the touch screen ideas for sure, now if they could get touch screen and voice recognition in one game that would be fantastic.

Seaman 2 would have got more attention if it was on the Wii and had some nicer graphics, the graphics on seaman 2 were truely horrid.

I’ll travel back in time!
I’ll hand out shiny dimes!

I didn’t know there was a Seaman 2 either.

So apparently Seaman 2 is a Japanese PS2 release (or at least the only copies on Ebay were in Japan). It also comes with a special PS2 controller with a microphone built-in. I think, having a US PS3 I’d be hosed to try to play this game for a number of reasons.

i remember watching trailers for seaman 2 before its release last year… and being very dissapointed that it wasn’t going to be released in north america or the uk. you sega nerds gotta get with the times! (just kidding) i also remember reading rumors about a seaman for the DS, that would have been cool… even better for the Wii.

im glad yoot hasn’t abandoned the seaman idea yet.
