Sega Nerds no longer able to make Sonic levels in LBP

~No more fun levels like this, I’m afraid~
You might remember several weeks back we posted up this rather nifty video (above) showing off a user-made version of Sonic the Hedgehog’s Green Hill Zone, with Little Big Planet. While perhaps not as speedy as the original hedgehog outing, what we saw was pretty good.
No doubt many PS3 owning Sega Nerds would be excited at the prospect of uploading their own Sega-themed outings to the Little Big Planet servers, but it seems that will no longer be possible. Sony is now removing any user-creations that could potentially infringe on copyrights.
Can’t blame Sony for wanting to avoid any legal issues with their titles, but it does ruin some of the enjoyment that people are having with the game. It is annoying for Sega fans trying to make fun verions of games that they love, personally I would have loved to try and make a Panzer Dragoon themed level.
In fact, I think the most interesting and exciting levels I have seen from LBP are all based off of other famous gaming franchises like Sonic, Mario and even a brilliant remake of Gradius I saw. Another annoying thing is that we were thinking of holding a LBP Sega-level creation contest for the future, which clearly won’t happen now.
Let’s hope that Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight are actually good games, otherwise it looks like we won’t be playing a good Sonic title for a long time.

Well.. that sucks…
like you said, cant blame Sony, but that does feel like
“CREATE ANYTHING! Really we got the tools, make ANYTHING! No restrictions!.
… except for:”

Everyone else does this, go look at Blizzard’s games like Warcraft 3.
Sony just sucks.

I bet we could get away with doing the contest if we locked the level with a code, so only Sega Nerds could get in.
I was still thinking of doing a Panzer Dragoon Level.

You got to be shitting me??? that’s one of the things that makes little big planet so great, is the freedom of control and chance to be so good with the tools, you can mimic other games out there. I think this is just restarted and stupid..awesome Sony good for you!

I’d imagine the main things that’d get the levels kicked off would be the titles and any artwork from said copyrighted games using the Playstation Eye. I’d imagine you could still do a Sega game themed level without actually referring to it directly. There is no copyright on grassy levels with checkered patterns on the walls and loops.

It’s silly to worry about this, since this is basically fan-art. It’s not like LBP level is going to take business away from one of these companies.

@ Gagaman:
I was typing my post at the same time as you. I think you said it much better than I did. I’ve played a lot of levels that were based on other video games.

I know a way around this.

Can’t you send it using Gmail. I mean, PS3’s go on the internet, right? So it should be easy peasy.
So long, suckers.

e-mail is not really a good way. but a site hosting levels would be great. can we save the levels to a usb drive and share it with friends over the internet?

Anything you create on a Sony console belongs to them now anyway. User created content should stay property of the user.

@Gagaman - Well I would have expected that too. The levels which use the same names and also use images taken directly from other games (using the camera).
-But apparently a lot of levels which are based off games (not using specific names or images) have been removed.
What really puzzles me is that Sony has also taken down levels based on God of War.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Sony own the rights to the God of War franchise?
Who would sue them over a franchise they own?

This seems like a rumor to me. After reading this post, I went through Sonic Green Hill Zone 1-3 and played a ton of other levels based on video games

@Emmett - well there’s a ton of PS3 websites and forums which beg to differ, as to it being a rumour.
And Sony has given an official response about deleting user-created content. They are doing it.
Perhaps some have been missed out, or it has been over-exaggerated as to just what Sony is deleting.
I’m not sure, but from the sounds of it a lot of LBP owners found their levels were no longer available to play.

After I posted that I read both of your source articles. The PS3 Fanboy one, Sony said they would stop deleting posts without warning, and would look into a way to tell people how to change their level to make it okay.

Are you telling me none of you idiots saw this coming when you started making the levels? Please.

Eday: No one here actually made a Sega Based Level. Maybe you should read the comments before you start calling everyone idiots. Idiot.
