Sega hoping to open up a new market for the Wii

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz Darren Williams, head of content at Sega A&R, spoke a little of his feelings towards the Wii and how Sega hopes to (effectively) create a new market in the console’s games library.

When asked if he thought the Wii was a good starting point for new gamers and if the gamers would then move on to the true next gen consoles (360 and PS3), Darren had this to say:

“I think on one hand the Wii has become the most expensive board game on Earth - it’s the kind of thing that families will play at Christmas, and probably won’t play again throughout the remainder of the year. So things like Wii Sports, Wii Fit to a certain extent, that’s great.”

Seems that someone has noticed that a lot of gamers don’t play on their Wiis that often - which is something I see mentioned all over the Internet.  I have even found myself hardly touching my Wii of late.  Darren goes on to say on how he thinks Sega will help correct this situation:

“Your point about a gateway, an entry point to gaming - certainly I think the Wii needs to have more titles. We’ve got two at Sega, but we’re backing to attract us to the slightly older thirty-somethings that might hit nostalgia, and they’ll feel they want to play House of the Dead: Overkill, and we’ve also got MadWorld. So we believe that the market is there and needs to be served. It’s risky because new markets don’t exist unless somebody goes to make them, so that’s what we’re backing.”

Which is all a good thing.  Even though the Wii does have some very good games on it, it just doesn’t seem to have enough good ’standard’ titles which you might find on other systems.

Annoyingly I have seen this interview miss-quoted on a couple of sites now, with people saying how Sega thinks the Wii is “an expensive board game” but the company is still willing to make money by putting games out for it.

Perhaps I’m the one who is misinterpreting this, but it sounds to me that Darren is saying that Sega is looking to fix this situation with the likes of MADWORLD and House of the Dead.  By shying away from the party games and mediocre titles, we see for the system, they are hoping to open up the software market for the console and get gamers playing on the system more.

Well you can decide for yourselves, check out the full interview, here.

I haven’t touched mine in a year, I just played samba de amigo once with my friends!

The last time I used my Wii was on the week Samba De Amigo was released. There are hardly any great games for the Wii out, but I’m certainly playing my 360 way more, especially for Fable 2 and a couple of good demos being available. I’m not playing my Wii at least until Animal Crossing City Folk and Sonic Unleashed are released.

Yeah, Animal Crossing and Sega are the only reasons for me to even bother turning my Wii on at this point.

I have a Wii and thanks to being able to play GameCube games on it, mine gets a lot of play.

I think it’s great that Sega wants to create games or basically re-release Wii versions. I would love to get House of the Dead on my Wii… I do however enjoy playing it on my Dreamcast with the light gun.

Just the other day I found a GameCube version of Crazy taxi, so that was a nifty surprise.

I think the last time I played my Wii was when I bought Samba de Amigo. After flipping off the system for the less-than-perfect controls, I haven’t touched it since, and it’s now collecting dust. Of course, it’s not like I played it much before that. Just for House of the Dead and a LITTLE bit of Zelda. Believe me, just a little.

What does A&R stand for?

@Cube_b3

Yeah tbh I don’t know what A&R means.
In the music industry it stands for “Artists and Repertoire” and they are like a bridge between an artist and record label - liasing between the two (plus other things).

-I’m assuming A&R here might be like another studio/area within Sega, like the old AM2 etc… studios. But I’m not sure.

Oh, I’m sorry, Sega, and where’s your console? Oh, right, your consoles all went down the drain for sucking so much ass.

Stop the whiny bitching and do something else than pumping out 3D Sonic shitholes.

Classic case of mistaken the blogsphere and forums as if it was the majority of the gaming market, it’s not, it’s just the loudest. I still play both my Wii and DS but why bother yelling about it and I can’t wait for Monster Hunter 3! as well as Madworld… but also i can’t wait for Bayonetta and i’m having a ball with Valkyria right now on PS3… i’m kinda platform agnostic but also hate to read about the anti-fan boyism…

it’s also ironic that previously M$ and Sony wanted to reach the mass market, now that Nintendo did, they talk about servicing the ‘hardcore’ whatever that means… also funny how the press falls into step with anti-nintendo sentiment, this then permeates into the developers because they feel the press is an eye into the real audience (which is up for debate)…

oh well, i’m sure nintendo is losing no sleep over any of this…

oh and genesis and dreamcast were not crap… what planet is that guy from???

True next gen consoles? They are all next gen consoles, you fucking idiot. Prettier graphics are not the only thing that define a next gen consoles. Chronology has more to do with it than anything. Fuck, you guys are getting stupider all the time.
