PETA praises Sega for removal of Samba commercial
Posted by Chris. Filed under News. Tagged with Samba De Amigo.
Our friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals dropped us a line today to let us know Sega has just entered their good graces. It seems PETA took issue with the fact Sega used live chimpanzees in the above Samba De Amigo commercial, and Sega quickly removed the commercial from its website, and we assume will cease any tv spots if they’re even airing anymore.
“Faster than you can mangle a Metallica song on Guitar Hero, Sega pulled the video from its site and promised to keep all great apes out of its ads,” a PETA rep wrote on the organization’s blog.
According to PETA, chimpanzee actors are often taken from their mothers at a young age and are sometimes subjected to electric shock, beatings or food deprivation from their trainers. When they’re deemed too old for the limelight, the chimps are then sent to zoos or donated to science.
In appreciation for Sega’s cooperation, PETA has said it will send the company a thank you card and vegan chocolates shaped like monkeys.

So Petas not against real live human actors? Were of Ape descendant arent we?
PETA needs to get their heads out of their asses, sure we all want to treat animals with respect and ethically, but there is NOTHING wrong with these commercials.
Look at Trunk Monkey. No one seemed to care the monkey was committing ruthless murder and came off as cute.
But a monkey shaking some Maraccas? He looks like hes having way more fun than the people who are playing it.

The game has already been out for some time now, so ceasing the commercials now probably wouldn’t hurt much. It’s a win-win for Sega.

i dont honestly see how it could be a win-win for sega. Making the commercials in the first place cost alot of money, and the purpose for commercials is to promote the game to those who dont eat sleep and breath the internet in order to make more sales to also hopefully pay back the commercial development cost
having the commercial cut means they wont be reaching their audience.
revenue lost because some ridiculous organization finds that using a Monkey in a commercial to shake Maraccas and being fun and joy to a family (which i remind is what pets are intended for in the first place, oh wait PETA hates pets) is Animal Abuse.
if that’s abuse, id love to see SEGA’s got in store for those they pamper.

I’m sure if animals could talk to humans they would tell PETA they are straight douche-bags, sure some apes get beat up and taken away from their mothers, but what if that ape wasent? people (well PETA in this case), take stuff like this wayyyyy too seriously, the chimpanzee looked like he was having some fun, shaking maracas sounds a lot more fun than sitting in a zoo having people gawk at you all day. soon they will be telling us drinking milk isent “humane”

Dude: I’m sure there are some who have said that, for a long time. VEGAN chocolate, anyone?

Peta’s attack should be directed at the trainers that abuse the apes, rather than the companies that hire them. would be

Kyle: PETA’s questionable practices aside, the pre-release/release hype train for the game has already passed. I suppose there’s the holiday season sales to be concerned about, but I think now that we’re a month and a half out, the game’s sales are pretty much just coasting. I don’t think cutting the commericials now will have a terribly significant impact.

If no one hired them, they wouldn’t have business. Its sad that they do this. I don’t agree with abuse of monkeys, but at least hey have it better than farm animals.

PETA is nothing but a group of extremist animal rights nuts. Some of their endeavors are honourable, but most are just stupid. Like the one where they asked Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream to use human breastmilk instead of cow milk to make their ice cream because cow milk is meant for baby cows. Somehow these PETA nuts can communicate with cows and know for a fact that getting milked is humiliating.
PETA can go to hell. Sega should take the vegan chocolates and eat them with medium rare veal steaks.

Thanks for the shout-out! The cruelty that goes on among animals in entertainment hasn’t been talked about enough, and many are still unaware of the abuses that take place for “happy” commercials like these. Find out more here: http://www.nomoremonkeybusiness.com/abusiveTraining.asp

PETA needs to shut up. They’re WAY overzealous in their efforts. In my state, they put up a billboard claiming that cow’s milk causes autism in children. There’s no evidence of that and they know it.
Screw PETA. They will never get my support.

Yes PETA everyone gets off on beating the crap out of animals…
Do not be fooled. PETA obviously hates pretty much EVERY kind of relationship between man and animal and would prefer that man has nothing to do with animals whatsoever. I guess thats why they KILL most of the animals they take in. Oh yes, I am sure they feel that’s much better.
These are the people that make commericals comparing animal testing to slavery in the US and the meat industry to the HOLOCAUST. Obviously a SEGA commerical disturbs them more than any of the horros that have taken place in human history.
Chris, please don’t promote their message. I know they make good chocolate but SEGA games are way better.

Lol - I cannot hear mention of PETA without thinking of that South Park episode “Vote or Die” - where Stan is exhiled from SP, and has to go live with a PETA group.
Lol the members of PETA have all married animals… pretty sick but funny.
Possibly one thing I hate in the world is animal cruelty. But PETA goes about it the wrong way. They are a form of “political correctness gone mad” but for the animal kingdom.
Emmett has the right idea here. They should focus their attention and resources on the trainers that treat them cruelly.
Not all animals are treated cruelly by their trainers these days - but PETA acts like all animals used on tv/adverts have a hard life. Fact is most of them are born in captivity and would not survive in the wild and a lot are well treated.
