EGM’s Jennifer Tsao joins Sega
Posted by George. Filed under News.
Jennifer has just left EGM and 1up to join Sega. She posted an entry at her 1up blog about the move, saying she wanted to be involved in making games for the whole family. I guess it’s a natural move, especially since she has a family. She will be Associate Creative Director for Family/Casual games over at Sega.
Here is a quote that will make most of you guys mad:
“Yes, the era of the hardcore gamer is coming to an end, and while I’ve loved my years at EGM, I’ve also been waiting eagerly for this time to come.”
I don’t personally think that hardcore gaming is dying or will die. I do think that the market will be expanded with a solid chunk of mainstream family games. If Call of Duty 4 has the ability to sell over 10 million units, there is room for hardcore titles.

Where in Sega is she headed?
She’s a journalist?
How will she code games?

Hopefully her position sticks with what she desires.
I too share the same dream of working with SEGA.

@ Cube_b3 my bad, I should edit that in!
Here is a quote from her blog:
” I’m leaving game journalism and heading over to the production side, where I’ll be working at Sega as Associate Creative Director for Family/Casual games”

Casual games make money that allows Sega to make Yakuza 3. Also Let’s Tap looks pretty cool.
But the fact is the casual market is ONLY growing on the Wii (and to a very small extent on the Xbox with the new price point). No casual gamer would ever pay 400 for a PS3 or an Xbox for the old price. I’m actually discouraged by the grotesque amount of hardcore shooters we’re getting this generation. Creativity has not been this generation’s strong point. -_-

so does that mean she can call up EGM and 1UP and tell them to give Sega high scores?

Chu Chu Rocket - that’s the only casual game Sega needs to be thinking about. We need a new game to be released on the Wii, PSN and XBLA!!!

Wow, after all the bashing of Sega that EGM does, I’m surprised she didn’t think the position was ‘below’ her. Oh well, at least she got off the sinking ship before it was too late. I don’t know if anyone else here reads/read EGM, but it’s turning into IGN. Full of hackneyed journalism that will rip on anything that’s unpopular, then worship Nintendo and Capcom with disregard to the quality of any given game that comes across their path.

Well, good for her! The Sega staff needs as many rabid Phantasy Star fans as it can get.

Casual games? Hardcore games? Both stupid terms. Games are games. Call of Duty 4 isn’t a hardcore game if someone plays it casually, and it isn’t a hardcore game simply because it’s a first person shooter. If I play GTA IV every few days for an hour or two, it is now a casual game since I play it casually.
On top of that, so-called “hardcore gamers”, apart from needing to give themselves such a title to make themselves feel better about their lack of social life or real life accomplishments, are not as important to the industry as they like to think they are.
Games are games, and gamers are gamers. The so-called “casual” and “hardcore” are lame and down right stupid. Shooting, killing, and violence does not make a game “hardcore”. The fact that the game companies themselves are using these stupid terms is aggravating.

It would seem just about everyone has got up and left from EGM.
