New portable Dreamcast the DreamTrooper

A guy called Hailrazer, over at the Benheck forums, has constructed a pretty cool handheld Dreamcast. There are a few fan-made portable Dreamcasts knocking around these days, but it is always a joy to see new ones coming around.
Halrazer’s Dreamcast, called the DreamTrooper, as the casing resembles a Storm Trooper’s helmet from Star Wars, is certainly one of the better made portable Dreamcasts.
The device was cobbled together using the shell of something called a “Lazer Doodle” (no idea what that is, I guess it’s an American toy), the LCD screen off a PS1 portable, a Quantum Fighter pad for the controls and some expensive rechargeable batteries.
The DreamTrooper is not 100% complete just yet, but it is in full working order and appears to have built-in memory. On the Benheck forums, before he made the device, he mentions the idea of an in-built VMU, but the video doesn’t specify if he has, or where it is. But when he loads Sonic Adventure 2, it looks like he has a few saved files there already.

Interesting mod, but we all know it’s not hard to find legit Dreamcast games, boo piracy . .

Doesn’t look very practical… tons clunkier than the Nomad!

Unless you refab the motherboard and make it smaller, by default anything like this can’t be much smaller than the dreamcast itself. The dreamcast was a pretty compact system. The saturn, on the other hand…
And indeed, boo piracy.

I think one of the biggest issues - regarding size is that you need the GD Rom drive and space for a disc to spin as well.
But still - it seems to fit in your hands quite well, and is comfortable enough to hold.

It’s not hard at all to find Dreamcast games! You just have to look online and in a few of the better game stores. I recently aquired about 40 games both online and in a store.
I think he shouldn’t be pirating the DC games. I mean, if he has the original and really plans on playing this on a trip or something, then sure, play a boot. Otherwise, he shouldn’t be advertising that he’s using a bootleg. Also, last I checked, it was only the Mil-CD DCs that play boots.

The system has been dead for quite a few years. When you buy Dreamcast games , neither Sega nor the original Developer is making a penny.
Buying a Dreamcast game only gives money to the Ebay Seller.
How in the world is playing a copied game hurting anyone on this system.
Really guys think things out before posting

Plus, CD-R’s are tough on the GD-ROM drive.

There is a kernel of truth in this, but there are plenty of retro games sellers and independent game shops on ebay. Buying from them keeps them in business. Not only that, but it wears out the GD-ROM (as SOUP mentioned) and not all copies are 1:1 of the originals.

It’s merely a rumor that playing cd-roms will burn out the laser.
The Dreamcast was meant to play cd’s and cd-r’s out of the box for music cd reasons.
It’s never been proven that playing cd-r’s will burn out a Gd-rom laser any faster than playing a Dreamcast original.

Having played plane crazy and half life, it sounds like the dreamcast is working quite a bit harder than with regular gd-roms. That’s my only point of reference. In other news, I really should try BoR.
But the other two points still stand.

I’m with Blackhawk on this one. Piracy is stealing if you’re stealing money from the developer, but there’s no way you can give Sega any money for Dreamcast games… unless you send them a donation.
If Sega wants money for these games, they could re-release them themselves or on other systems, and I can bet you that most Dreamcast fans would be more than willing to re-buy games they already own for the current consoles. I would. And did (Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Crazy Taxi on GameCube).
This is a far cry from buying an R4 and downloading hundreds of brand-new DS games.
On a side note, I’ve also bought Sonic 1 (in various iterations) about 5 times now (original Mega Drive version, Sonic Jam, Sonic Mega Collection, Sega Genesis Collection, XBLA). If I also happen to have a copy on my hard drive, I think I’m entitled.
