Golden Axe: Beast Rider gameplay

The folks over at TeamXbox have been able to get their hands on the new Golden Axe game, giving out some first impressions of the game, plus some video footage. Annoyingly the video quality has been somewhat reduced by YouTube, you can watch the better looking videos here.
While the hands-on impressions given are quite short, they do sound pretty positive on the game. Nothing too gushing, but I definitely got a positive vibe about the game from them. Â
One thing I am glad to see in the game is limb severing, it always adds that little extra something to a fighting game, when you can cut someone in half. Also, notice that when Death Adder’s underlings die, they turn to stone - just like in the original arcade version of Golden Axe.
Check after the break for the second video and some of their impressions.
You’ll still be mashing on those buttons, however, just like in the original masterpiece, but it’s not the mind-and-finger-numbing kind of mashing that made the series famous.
Golden Axe: Beast Rider features a much more advanced combat system than your typical hack-n-slash. The basics are built upon the tried-and-true light attack/strong attack system, with multiple button presses pulling off slightly fancier moves.
Not only is Golden Axe: Beast Rider’s combat and gameplay features commensurate with the 360-era software, but Secret Level also stepped it up in both story and presentation in order to keep up with the Jones’.
…It’s all made more interesting with excellent in-game visuals (including a gruesome dismemberment engine) and some spectacular cut scenes. The soundtrack along this twelve-plus hour journey is quite compelling as well—no more MIDI synth tracks. Yay!
Be sure to check TeamXbox for the full set of impressions.

the only counter-attack they show is at the end of the first video, and it ends half-way into it. The combat looks very standard except for that feature, so they should show it when promoting their game!

The gore seems kinda out of place to me, given how cartoony the original is. The game’s still looking good, though.

Yeah, even though I like being able to cut limbs and stuff off - the combat does look a bit so-so. It just doesn’t look quite as refined as the limb severence from Viking.
Not that Viking had the most revolutionary combat ever or anything - but cutting limbs off enemies was immensely satisfying in that game. It doesn’t look quite as cool in GA.

I think this game looks terrible… They should have given Viking Battle of Asgard this long in development and canned this shitty game ages ago.
On the topic of Viking, I hope for more games in the series but vastly improved apon… each area of the game has room for improvment and could be fleshed out.
