Phantasy Star Zero debut trailer

GameTrailers has the first trailer for Sega’s latest entry in the Phantasy Star series of multiplayer RPGs: Phantasy Star Zero for the Nintendo DS. We first heard about this game last month from Famitsu, and now we can finally see it in action.
The art style looks similar to the previous Phantasy Star Online, Universe and Portable games, except all the playable characters look a lot younger. Almost like children. In fact, the characters in the game itself also look similarly young, and Phantasy Star Zero resultantly looks like a cross between Phantasy Star Universe and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you. (It’s bad.)
The game looks like it doesn’t stray far from the established mechanics of slash/shoot/run, with support for four players, probably locally and online. We’ll have to wait and see if this turns out as gimped as I imagine a game like this on the DS would be, or if Sega can somehow pull a full-fledged Phantasy Star multiplayer game out of their hat.

I like how the opening to the tune in the video is exactly the same as the opening to PSO’s intro music.
It’s got online play with strangers, apparently.
Did I mention this is my most anticipated game of all time? (Well, since the original PSO in fact.)
Because it is.
(In summary: Even if it’s shit, I’ll quite happily still play it for years.)

Agreed. I’m really looking forward to this one.
I don’t give a shit if it looks kiddie or not. It’s still PSO.

Sega is doing what Nintendo loves to do: make the same game 10,000 times with better graphics, added levels, and new characters.
This is NOT the Sega that I knew growing up.
Now it’s time to play some Zaxxon!

I’d hardly say this has better graphics than the other PSO games…
I actually want more PSO though, especially after the sour taste PSU left in my mouth.

Wait a minute. This is a DS game? It looks like it has better graphics than a DS game.

Yeah, I’m really impressed with the graphics for a DS game.

I’m not entirely sold on the art direction and the game’s focus on even younger, pre-teen characters (although that’s the target demo for this game, I guess), but I’m intrigued by Gonzo studio doing animation for it.
As far as the gameplay goes, returning to fixed race/class combinations is a step backwards, but it might be more appropriate for the DS. It looks like they’ll be using PSU’s special moves system, but using a character-bound PP bar instead of having ones for individual weapons.

Ever notice how PSO is infinitely better than PSU? A step back is a step forward.

I disagree entirely. While PSU did take some steps backwards it introduced many steps forward as well. (In fact, I’d argue many of those backwards steps as really further forward steps that weren’t taken.) Regressing entirely to that old gameplay (which they are clearly NOT doing with PS0 by incorporating PSU’s more compatible ideas into the equation) would be tantamount to throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Its a DS game, of course its not on par with PSU. What is important is that it looks to be a fun game, and one that will push the DS, at least graphically.
