MSN ignites the console wars, once again
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, Multi-platform, News, Retro. Tagged with Poll.

MSN wants to know what the greatest gaming consoles of all time are, and is getting anyone whos cares to vote. But can we, the Sega Nerds of the world, tip the balance of war in favour of our favourite game company? I’d like to think so.
Right now the only Sega console in the Top 10 rankings is the Megadrive, in at an impressive 4th place (just like Great Britain in the Olympics - Whoo!), with a score of 69%.
I think it would be pretty great for everyone to get on and vote for the Sega consoles over the others. It would be interesting to see if the Sega fans of the world can actually make a dent in the final rankings.Â
But these “MSN Battles” are not a straight forward poll, where one might click on their favourite console of all time and then see where it gets in the final ranks.Â
No, voters are asked to chose which console they think is best in a series of one on one ‘battles’. The consoles final postions are rated (in percentages) on how many battles they win.
Quite frankly I think this is a pretty convoluted way to go about things, as the process never seems to end - I was voting for a good 20 minutes. Worst of all is that I did seem to get a few of the same battles more than once, and also some of the choices for consoles are pretty weird.
For example they have both the ZX Spectrum 48k and the ZX Spectrum 128k in the list. Now, technically the 128k is the superior system, it has a built in tape deck and was slightly more powerful than the 48k. But, growing up I owned the 48k and one of my friends had the 128k system - and they played exactly the same games! My friend and I would always share games, and I don’t think there was a single game of his that I couldn’t play (and vice versa).

Perhaps there were some games which couldn’t be played on the 48k, (I’m not 100% certain), but between us we had probably 500 odd games (yes many were shite), and they all worked fine on my 48k. To me, it feels like comparing the Nintendo DS to the DS Lite. The DS Lite is a bit better, but ultimately they are the same system.Â
So they should have just had “ZX Spectrum” down (maybe showing a picture of both models) or just the 128k - because I think it would be weird to choose the 48k over the 128k, in the long run. While I said they played the same games, the 128k was more reliable, easier to use and just a superior model.
Anyway, while it might be a bit of a long process, I think we have enough passionate Sega fans here, and I assume you all have friends, who can help to try and bump up the percentages for each of the Sega consoles. I want to see the Dreamcast and Saturn break into the top 10!
It can’t be that hard, can it…?
By the way, in case you are wondering the answer to the first image… I went for the Dreamcast ;o)

i’ll pass. Don’t care what the masses play, and fail to see the point in head to head battles with consoles.

F*** that S***, I’m voting for Genesis. SNES only great games were third parties like Killer Instinct and Street Fighter II series.

The Genny went toe to toe with SNES. and SNES NEEDED Capcom,Konami and Squuaresoft, to stay a float, but long story short,
Genny had best 2d sidescrollers that pushed 16 bit sidescrolling to its peak.
Shinobi3
Anything by Treasure
Monster World 4
ThunderForce 3 and 4
Sonic series
MUSHA
Ranza X
Rocket knight
etc etc
SNES had most of the best RPG’s
FF series mainly
and more RPG’s not as many 2d sidescrollers to go toe to toe with the Genny.
sorry bout the typos, im on my way out!!><

part2
Why the Genny was better then the DC
Liabrary power!
platformers galor! better RPG’s Phantasy star series was best at part 4 on Megadrive and that even outdid Skies of Arcadia. Shining Force 2 looked like some shit out of a Don bluth/disney studio vs DC one looked like Legos and a bad N64 game(and yes dc SF was a good game)
Furthermore….
Megadrive had better side shmups and treasure at there best! Alien soldier 300$import vs washed down Radiant Silvergun we know as a 50$ “IKARUGA”
Sonic games on the Megadrive were FLAWLESS!
Dc version were good but that whole city bullshit and bad collision detection at times, pluse making u play with losser pals, bogged down the series..
What the DC did right and BETTER then any one else! ARCADE GAMES.
The dc was Capcoms bitch and made sweet sweet play love for us, with such graces as, Power stone, street fighter series, Vampire savior,Marvel vs Capcom,Charge n blast(underrated game, yes!)Outrigger,Samba de amigo,Space channel 5, REZ etc etc.
VERDICT
The Sega Dreamcast lacked the platformer and rpg, which are a STAPLE of a full on system.
The dc was no really for casual gamer but the hardcore.
The Megadrive was 4 both.
MOST!!! people who owned a Megadrive 1st will agree with me..we all felt that huge lack.

I don’t give two shit about RPG. Your argument is now invalid kind sir :3
As you said, DC brought a lot of new experiences. These days MD is an hardcore platform that excels at what it does best: exciting gameplay and addictiveness. But DC is a breath of fresh air both to the hardcore and casual player. When I pick up Virtua Tennis, I’m hardcore. My mother picks it up and it’s just casual for example. The MD, you pick up Streets of Rage and you have two mental gears: Hardcore and Madness.
So I think it is a matter of personal preference mainly. But besides I love the DC (even more than the MD) MD was, as a platform, better in it’s time. Many games, fun arcade multiplayer, 16-BIT of HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS! Those were the days..

I’m going to vote for the Genesis, simply because I want it to go higher then the PS2, at this point the DC is a lost cause.

That’s just cruel. Choosing between the Dreamcast and Mega Drive is like choosing between oxygen and food.

What?!?! How am I supposed to choose between the Saturn and the Genesis? I love them both!
I voted for the Genesis to give it the edge over the SNES. I don’t know how I can live with myself.
What? Gamecube vs. N64? Dreamcast vs. Genesis?
On the plus side, Dreamcast sits at 50%, and Master System at 49% (both as of this writing). I don’t remember where Saturn sits. Again, on the plus side, the Genesis is at 70% - that’s 2nd place!

Wow that’s great news!
When I posted this the Dreamcast had about 48% - so it’s (slowly) working! :o)

SNES 71
Mega 70
Play2 69
It’s fucking working. God, I feel like back in 1995 when Sega and Nintendo fanboys in my neighborhood battled out, old-school.

the genesis can destroy the dreamcast
anyday the dreamcast lwas full of lame pc and psone ports and i feel the system lacked
a true identity because soul calibur ,marvel
vs capcom, powerstone, shenmue, virtua tennis 2k2, dead or alive 2 were the few standout games . i feel robbed by dreamcast because i had to buy a ps2 for
virtua fighter 4 and a xbox for panzer dragoon orta for many other games like
shenmue 2
dredragoon

Shenmue 2 was on the Dreamcast too. And you’re missing A LOT of good games from what you said.. Samba de Amigo, Crzy Taxi, Sonic Adventures, Ferrari Challenge, Chu Chu Rocket, tHotD2, MSR, JSR, etc..

Like I said, for thos of us who were spoiled with games, and not a “GAME” the Dc lacked BIG time! back then sega had games that were up to par with the best in almost any genre. For the heavey action side scorller genra, we had games that in todays market, that are up to par with Devil may cry, Ninja gaiden, “the bigboy games” the Dc had nothing of the sort. One of the reasons MOST OF US GAMERS bought a PS2 was for this sole reason. So even aside the RPG there was still A LOT more substance.Yeah, sure Megadrive games are really dated but I still play it for ton of sidescrollers and shmups that the dc lacked. The Dc is an arcade machine, it lacked full on made games. shit I am not even going into the imports the Megadrive had. Im pretty sure the megadrive liabarry is more in demand then the DC’s list. A comparasent of what games are wanted and what they sell for on ebay, I am sure outweigh and outfuck the DC’s list by a landslide, and that sir is what we all call a FACT!
just look at dredragoon up here lol
OH SHIT I 4GOT THE GENNY COULD ALSP PLAY MASTER SYSTEM GAMES.
@Dredragoon…preach on brotha, preach on…

Once again, MSN broke something. I played the Console Battle rating 25 times… Dreamcast didn’t show up once. Lame and skewed… which makes it even more lame.

Yeah I do agree with you Christopher.
MSN hasn’t done it very well at all - I had some of the same ‘battles’ appear multiple times.
But it’s kind of fun to see how high we can get the Sega consoles on this. ;)

Wey Hey! I just looked at the results just now - and the Megadrive is in top place!
Both the Snes and MD have 70% - but Megadrive is now in pole position!

1) Sega Mega Drive-71%
2) SNES-70%
Sega Mega Drive FTW! Now all we need is a new post from Graham to celebrate in a grand fashion, complete with lolcats. Now, if someone could kindly explain to this yank how the bbc micro is considered a gaming system? It looks like an old brother electric typewriter.

@BitMaster
I see how you can say the Genesis had more great games, but that was in a MUCH larger span of time than the Dreamcast. As far as the PS2, I doubt “MOST OF US GAMERS” did buy a PS2 immediately after the Dreamcast. I didn’t and I definitely am a core gamer. The Dreamcast did have many games that compared to the PS2 at the time, you can’t say it didn’t have good RPGs (Skies of Arcadia, PSO), FPS/Lightgun (QIIIA, HOD2), or Action (BANG!, Blue Stinger). The Dreamcast did more in 2 years than almost any other console. Hell, I just BARELY got a PS2 and other than most of the SEGA games, I can’t find anything “Really Good”!
Anyway, I think you are discounting the Dreamcast too much even in comparison to the Genesis.
Oh: and those “Big boy games” that you mentioned are pretty mediocre if you ask me…

@Volvagia
Well the library speaks for itself, and yes who knows WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED, that NEVER DID! it lacks, is the bottom line and guess what a lot of us wanted games like Gunvalkerie(on xbox), Shinobi ,,Panzer dragoon, Devil may cry, Shadow of the colossus(which the dc cant run due to lack of poly power compered to ps2) Dont even try and act like the DC library has fighting chance against a full on real selection of games. I love Sega dearly, as much as I love Treasure, but even I aint ignorant thinking the DC had a vast diverse selection of games. Ratio wise it lacks! and always will lack! for every good game Dc had the ps2 has at least 7 titles that are good or better…even virtuafighter 4
if you don’t like at least 4 of these titles, you are a disgusting fanboy who gives us all real hardcore sega gamers a bad name.
Metal gear solid 2&3
virtua fighter 4
ACE combat
Front mission 4 and 5
shadow of the colsus
Okami
Devil may cry
Dragonquest 8
Persona3
MOST CAPCOMS FIGHTING GAMES THT MADE THE DC WORTH OWNING!
sega super stars tennis
Sword of the berzzerk(the really good one)
Shining force exa(yes, this was actually very solid titles, just dont think of it as shining force)
Megaman collection
sega genesis collection
PSU
odins sphere
discgea
raiden 3
mushi hime
la pucle
castlevania
ico
zone of the enders
god hand
dragon ball z series
gundum
fist of the north star fighting game
any cave shooter
i can go on!
im sure most of us “core gamers that own a ps2 own some of these games. so dont give me
“Hell, I just BARELY got a PS2 and other than most of the SEGA games, I can’t find anything “Really Goodâ€
DONT EVEN POKE AT SONY LIBRARY! that’s just stupid! and one of the most ignorant remarks I ever heard from one Sega fan to another.
and no , blue stinger is a pice of shit! its not even a AA title. face it the DC is and will always lack, compared to most of the old and current systems. My master system has better platformers then my DC
and just 4 a final stab, the DC lacked the most in the rpg dept! compered to the ps2 and genesis.

If you are going to flame and defend your position, it wouldn’t hurt to spell check.
I don’t think it’s being ignorant to challenge the PS2’s library. I think it’s ignorant to not realize that less than 10 percent of the library is games that weren’t conceived in a corporate conglomerates board meeting.
Yes, the PS2 has a bigger library! BIG FRIGGIN DEAL!!! I’m talking the percentage of QUALITY GAMES to the percentage of crap. The Dreamcast still has it beat in a similar time frame.
MY point is that just because a game doesn’t have your favorite Capcom or Konami mascot in it doesn’t make it a crappy game.
But then opinions differ. I obviously like a bunch of games you don’t, and after seeing your list… definitely vice versa.
