Sega of America Game Archive

This is a few days old now, (we dropped the ball and missed it) but we have had so many people sending us links (although decided to give credit to the first two people to tip us), and it is a pretty cool story, so I have decided to post it up anyway, for anyone who has not seen it yet.

In case you didn’t know, Sega of America recently moved it’s offices in San Francisco to… well another part of San Francisco. After the move, the chaps over at the SoA Blogs went on a mini adventure, exploring their new surroundings, when they came across a discovery that would make any Sega Nerd hard.

A room full of Sega titles, some old, some new and a whole load of peripherals. Shelves full of games, games stacked floor to ceiling and even more games and accessories tucked away in drawers. Plus some cool collectibles, like this Dreamcast Neon Sign (which still works apparently)!

Clumsyorchid from the SoA Blog explained what they found:

The shelves are packed with games from all the great consoles of SEGA past, as well as games from competitor consoles. Each shelf is a bit deceptive in the photos, as they are all double packed with games behind games. While walking through the room, everyone had a game they found on the shelf that had a fond memory. There are too many games for me to pull up one that really made me smile among the whole group, I found myself more interested in the peripherals that I never had a chance to play with.

Most of the games aren’t even shelved and appear stacked from floor to ceiling. Most of the larger peripherals are also along the walls.

The guys documented their findings on their Flickr page, with lots of great photographs.

You might ask what Sega is thinking of doing with this room. Well it seems that all of the room’s contents are going to stay within Sega HQ, but there is talk of letting people rent some of the titles!

Not sure if renting is for Sega employees only (I imagine it would be), but it would be cool if they open shop to everybody. I’d like to see Sega start up their own “Blockbuster” style chain ;o)

The fact that they have games released rescently such as Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution is quite odd.

@Cube_B3 - apparently they also have games from other companies, on other systems. SO it’s not just Sega made games in the room. (now that’s weird!)

It’s funny reading the flickr comments. One guy said “I actually remember playing Virtua On in the acacde” like it’s so long ago that it’s a miracle that he remembers it.

The whole renting thing was really meant for internal only. I don’t think it’s terribly realistic to think about handing these out and getting them back, heh. We’re all looking forward to getting our hands on the games.

The Room started as a sega archive, but has grown to include other non-sega games/systems etc. It’s pretty much a great collection, no matter how you slice it.

Is that a Dreamcast made of SOLID GOLD?

This is indeed the Holy Grail of Sega Nerds.

I can’t help but wonder, Sega still has GD-ROM burners, why don’t they copy some games and sell them on a Official Dreamcast Store or something? And Saturn games on the Official Saturn Store?
Now wouldn’t that be awesome. It needn’t to be a mass production thing.. Like, you’d buy a game online and they only copied that game for you. If they sold these copies at reasonable prices (graded by quality/rarity) I think they would make a pretty lot of money. Just imagine it. A retro Sega game store that allows you to buy EVERY SINGLE game you want?
These games wouldn’t have the original covers nor printed manuals so it wouldn’t interfere with the values of the original games.

@Clumsyorchid. Yeah I thought that would be the case.
If they do rent the games out to you - then I reckon you would probably become pretty popular among your friends.
Everyone back to Clumsy’s house! ;o)

Crackdude - I like your thinking. If I were Simon Jeffery, I would definitely look into something like that.
Like just selling a disc. No need to print cases or manuals or anything. It would be great.
(Obviously never happen…)

Remember when Sega said that they couldn’t put their arcade stuff on the Virtual Console because they couldn’t find it?

Nights, with the nights controller.
That takes me back to a birthday many years ago. Still play it now. What a game.
