Simon Jeffery: “There is a lot of crap coming out for the Wii”

Simon JefferyEverybodys favourite President (Sega President), is out there speaking his mind (as always), and I applaud him for it.

In a recent interview with VentureBeat, Simon Jeffery is asked about future Sega mes appearing on the Wii, and this is what he said:

“The Wii is a very cost effective platform to experiment with. There is a lot of crap coming out for the Wii in general. But if it’s not a good game, it doesn’t sell.”

Now, I have said this loads of times, I am a pretty big fan of the Wii.  A lot bigger than many people on this site - but even I cannot deny that there is a lot of rubbish on the console, and what Wii gamers need are more ‘decent’ games.

Games that are not rushed - but quality games which look and play good.  We know the system is capable of producing high quality games - just take a look at Mario Galaxy, or even an early game like Super Monkey Ball.   We need developers to try their best, and Simon seems to agree:

“That flood of crap will die down as publishers become more coherent. The Wii is a great opportunity for hitting hardcore gamers. No one is doing that. With “Mad World” from Platinum Games, we are trying to show that millions of Wii games want to move on to mature games. They don’t have to have an Xbox 360 to do that.”

Of course this news comes just a couple of days after the Daily Mail reported on how Sega is disgracing the “family-friendly” Wii with MADWORLD.

I think all developers and gamers need to perhaps take a leaf out of Simon’s book - and point out that they want more games like MADWORLD, (Oh and Resident Evil, Dead Rising, Alone in the Dark, Tomb Raider, House of the Dead…) you know, games for older gamers, and not cheap kid-only games.

By developers/gamers making their voices clear then perhaps the meddling people from pressure groups and crap UK tabloids (like the Mail), who don’t actually play games, will shut up.

Yeah, he’s speaking the truth about Wii having too many pointless games coming out on it…but this twit just the other day announced that Yu Suzuki no longer worked for Sega (which of course turned out to be wrong information).

A couple of months ago he pretty much insulted the Sonic fanbase too.

I dunno, this guy talks a bit too much and he always ends up saying the wrong thing. He’s not doing himself any favors, really. I think he needs to stop appearing in interviews for a while before he goes and says something really stupid. >.>

Oh no DiGi - I absolutely love Simon Jeffery.
I used to never really give a damn, but he speaks his mind so well that in recent months, I have grown to love the man.

But yeah - the slip about Yu Suzuki was pretty foolish.

In the same interview he said Secret Level will never be a good studio. The best part is he bought the crap studio in order to save time and effort of actually building a good one, what an ass.

He also said he doesn’t want Sega to be known as the Sonic company anymore, because they’ve brought Sonic quality to ROCK BOTTOM!

Yu Suzuki hasn’t done shit, i would have thought he didnt’ work at Sega anymore as well.

SOJ, this should have been your wake up call to give him a nice budget for a game (or not to cancel it)

Sonic games do suck, lol. He was just stating a fact.

Ok, so the Sonic games ain’t been doing too well lately but it’s one thing making an observation and it’s another thing insulting the very people who buy your games, isn’t it?

I don’t think he should comment on things that he knows nothing about. That’s his problem. If he didn’t know what was happening with Yu Suzuki then he should have just said “i don’t know what Yu Suzuki is up to. Sorry, i can’t answer the question”. Instead he answered with whatever random shyte he had in his head and caused a bit of a stir because of it. If you don’t know what you’re talking about then don’t open your mouth, Mr. Jeffery. Simple as. :/

I do like his ‘no bullshit’ approach in interviews but he can’t deliver any strong points if he keeps messing up the facts. It makes him look stupid.

fuck you people. WHY do you always complain about everything?
He’s pure SEGA. If we love Sega, we must support him. So he thought that Suzuki didn’t work for Sega anymore, what’s wrong with that? He went on to inform himself and corrected what he had said. Great man. He’s not like that Sony crap.

“If we love Sega, we must support him”

LOL, you mean we must love the guys who sold Sega’s soul only to reach a poor sixth place in the top publishers?

No way!

No i disagree, the wii is not alone in the crap-ful market, its pretty much the norm for our industry for several years - every console has a craptastic line-up. Simon spouts useless rhetoric most of the time, and when he’s not doing that he’s making up shit he has no idea about. He doesn’t seem SEGA enough to me.

@Digi_Valentine: BTW MOST sonic games sell well (1 mill plus), even the craptacular next gen one… not sure why people think sonic is in dire straights…

Let’s not forget to thank our favourite president for Out Sourcing classic Sega franchises to crappy third parties and buy shitty studios like Secret Level, he is definetly the next Tom Kalinske!

god. you people are picky.

Yeah, I bet every single game EVER that had SEGA on it’s cover was made by Sega.
Yeah, Sega should continue to sell only 10.000 copies of good games like it did in 1990.
And Sega should whore-up all of it’s franchises to the max every year only with slight graphical fixes so it could reach the top3 (cofEAcof).

It was because Sega not changing at all that the Saturn flopped! “oh, we have 50% of the market share so let’s put up a console with 9 processors so it will sell like cupcakes!” Massive fail. Sega eventually learned with the Dreamcast but it was too late. And now instead of making games for a single platform, Sega makes for SEVEN.

I guess Sega employees wont mind working 24/7 without eating so that you play a game for 4h a day while you should be studying/working/in the kitchen.

Stop complaining! It is all this Web 2.0 thing.. I wonder if you complained about Golden Axe II and III, which SUCKED!! Mind that cabrones.

@60Hz - oh, i know Sonic games sell. I just meant the general reviews of the games are bad. Sorry, i should have been more clear with what i meant just there. My bad. ^^;

Hey, it took 21 months since its release date for Sonic 2K6 to reach 1.16 million units, summing up both systems?
Man, it sure was one hell of a failure.

I’m not particularly thrilled with this Jeffery dude, but as long as he retracts his wrongs (unlike people like, say, Jack Tretton), it’s cool with me.
