The Summer of Sonic 2008

Well this years Summer of Sonic event is now over.  It is the second SoS event, but the first to be held in a real life location (the first was web-only) and the very first gathering of Sonic fans, organised by the Sonic community.

I know some of you had doubts about how ‘Nerdy’ it would be, and that large gatherings of geeks should be prohibited by law.  But I have to say, I had a really good time - even though I was clearly out of my depth.

Seriously, among my (real life) friends I’m considered a bit of a gaming geek (or Sega Nerd, if you will) but compared to some people at this event, I was like some sort of high school jock - sans the great sporting abilities and huge muscles.

Anyway, even though it was pretty Nerdy, it was immensley fun, and really enjoyable to see such a large amount of people gathering under one roof, all with the same passion Sega’s number one mascot.  All very nice people.

A massive shout out to all the organisers of the event, including Svend “Dreadknux” Joscelyne, Kevin “ArchAngel” Eva, and all the guys at The Sonic Stadium, Sonic Wrecks, and to Sega Europe for organising some great prizes and the chance for so many people to play Sonic Chronicles before it’s release date.

If you are interested in hearing and seeing more about the event, then we should have the photos and videos taken at the event - including some live performances by Lee Brotherton aka Bentley Jones (Sonic Adventure, Sonic ‘06), TJ Davis (Sonic R, MSR) and one Mr. Richard Jacques (he’s been involved with so many Sega games I won’t list them all - just know he is great!).

The full article should be up early next week, so stay tuned for some truly great live performances (from above artists) and cracking moments of crazed Sonic fans living the dream.

Yeah Im kind of hoping I can get it all edited and up by Tuesday.
I ended up videoing over 7GB on my camcorder!!
-Problem is a lot of it isn’t very good (due to my inability to hold cameras still for more than 3 seconds - and also to soo many people walking aimlessly in front of me when I was trying to record)

-But yeah, once I can edit together the highlights and seperate the Live performances, then it should be good.

…Also (just so you know) there should be another video treat for some of you on Monday (again if editing goes to plan) - but not to do with SoS ;)

I have excellent footage of the live performance (was right at the front), but I’m in the same boat - got to edit a hours worth of footage (and find the space to store the video!) and then get Richard Jacque’s approval before I can make it public.

Hey man!
Was fantastic to chat to you up in the crow’s nest, albeit a brief chat; was great to finally talk to someone from the Nerds in person!
I think everyone of us involved in the organisational side of things were taken back by the scale of the event - it was really a spectacular day even if it was super-geeky. But who cares eh? The vibe of the event was fantastic though, and regardless of age, gender, creed, and level of fanatisism - everyone united to make it a flawless event.
Props to Svend & Kev - the big cheeses, Josh and his security team, all our guests, and all of the guys who put in quite substantial amounts of money to finance the event. Oh…and SEGA of course!
