Summer of Sonic - this cake is not a lie

Summer of Sonic CakeFor those that don’t know, the “Summer of Sonic” (aka SoS) event will be starting (and ending) tomorrow - Saturday 9th August, in London - and one of the special treats for visitors will be cake.  And what a cake it is!

Seriously, I am very impressed by how this treat has turned out.  The cake has been modelled after the classic Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehoggame, complete with; waterfall, bridge, jumping piranha, checkpoint (star) post and Sonic’s shoes, (no Sonic though, perhaps he forgot to tie his laces before running off at speed).

Take into account this cake was not made by a professional, and she (Joanne Wheatley), did it in her spare time.  I think you can all agree that it’s very cool.  Here is what she had to say on the subject of “that F*****g cake!”:

“I can’t say I’m overly experienced with doing such a big project… with cake. After spending the best part of the week working on it, though I am proud of it, this will always be know as “that F*****g cake!” I hope everyone who has some, enjoys it.”

Of course with some 400-odd people, who signed up on the website, attending the show tomorrow - there will not be enough cake for everyone.  But hopefully some of you will be able to get some, and for those that do not, there is said to be some smaller cupcakes to enjoy.  So there will be treats!

In other SoS news, the Guiness Book of World Records will be attending the show, in a bid to see if any records are broken throughout the day.  There is the chance of this being the biggest Sonic fan gathering ever, and also there will be some gaming records to break:

In particular, the Games Zone will have a special table dedicated to run-throughs of Emerald Hill Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive.  Working with Twin Galaxies, the online high-score leaderboards, the Guinness World Records will be present in tallying gamer’s fastest times in both Act 1 and Act 2 of the iconic first Zone. Be sure to practice, and do your best on the day!

For anyone who is out of the country, or who just cannot be bothered to attend, but are interested to see what happens throughout the day then good news.  The people behind SoS have been toying around with setting up some Worldwide live broadcasting for the event, and you should be able to see what is happening throughout the day, live online.

It should promise to be a pretty entertaining day all round, from looking at the schedule - with plenty to see, play and prizes on offer.  I am hoping to attend myself (but cannot commit) - so fingers crossed, we will have some coverage, ourselves here at Sega Nerds.

For more information on the event, be sure to check out the official Summer of Sonic website.

Nerd gatherings are always queer, no exceptions. It can be Star Trek, Comics, Counter Strike, Anime, Furries, anything. It is always stupid.

Sonic would combine like several of these together.

@ Kogen - Gee, not like you’re on a blog site with the word “Nerd” in it. And that does not make you an exception to what you just said. Would you go out and meet people who care about the same thing, or be in the dark and not enjoy a public event. The only thing I agree with is that furries shouldn’t be given slack.

I’ve never did hear of this kind of convention, sounds interesting. The cake looks nice, it’s not a lie!

Well like I said, I think gatherings like this are queer and nerdy. A fatass playing Mario and Sonic is no different than a fatass dressed as Darth Vador.

The “nerd” part of the site’s name is a joke.

I’m actually watching the event on a live-stream right now. It’s proving to be quite a fun event. About time a Sonic Convention happened anyway.

Nice one.

p.s. not a fatass Sonic in sight, by the way :)

Just because you visit a nerd site, doesn’t make you a nerd. Your among the cool people who exploit life less nerds…

Seriously the staff does all the nerdy homework we read it lol

I pretty much agree with Kogen. I personally find such gatherings too awkward to attend. This is still a pretty damn cool event though. Svend out did himself with it. He almost had loads more, too…
