Rumour: Jet Set Radio to make a comeback?

We’ve heard this rumour several times in the past few years, but perhaps now it has more credence.
According to Kotaku, Sega has recently re-filed, for the game’s trademark - dated 24th July 2008 - and at the recent Comic-Con this year, the gaming website overheard some interesting rumours.
That’s what we heard from friendlier folks at Comic-Con last week, specifically that the publisher was planning on bringing back one of its more beloved franchises, Jet Grond Radio.Â
We were overly excited to hear a rumor that Sega was planning on reintroducing the series, this time on the Wii.
Yeah I know many people will complain about the possibility of a Wii version - how the Xbox 360 and PS3 can do the franchise’s great visuals more justice. But then some might enjoy the concept of tagging the walls and buildings of Tokyo-to, with over the top remote waving gestures.
However, for those who are worried that Sega might be venturing down the Wii route, the trademark filed makes references to; “downloadable game programs,” “game programs for use with mobile phones,” and “game programs for use with hand-held game machines.”
So it could be wholly possible that the game will appear on multiple systems, perhaps even the iPhone - after all Simon Jeffery did recently comment on how the iPhone was producing Dreamcast quality titles. Perhaps he was hinting at this?
But there is always a possibility that this is a remake, and if that is true, I would not be surprised if Sega release a Wii version. Afterall Sega has released many of it’s old franchises on the beloved Nintendo system - like House of the Dead, Ghost Squad, Sega Bass Fishing, NiGHTS etc…
I guess we will have to sit and wait to see if this is true. Please don’t leave us hanging Sega - a confirmation or even a definite denial would be welcome (better than waiting).

Tagging with the Wii remote would be the lamest motive for putting on the Wii. Though if they bring it back I wouldn’t be surprised is a new one is made for the PS3/360.

First, learn some grammar. Second, learn how to punctuate, and Third, Learn how to chill and not rave like a lunatic.
Personally I would like to see them on all three as long as the dev cost was minimal to port it. I want SEGA to get as much money as they can out of a great IP like this. Otherwise I would like to see it on the X360. Its controller is closest to the Dreamcast’s out of the three and I think they could do some cool things with Xbox Live.

Next Gen Graphics? Screw Next Gen Graphics, Jet Set Radio is cel-shaded and I would much rather have fresh gameplay with motion-graffiti and DC graphics. Motion controls on the Wii for this title is the most logical thing to do, I would be so disappointed at poor marketing choices if they decided to release on PS3/360.
To be honest, I hope the rumors are true and that they are making a completely new Jet Grind Radio. The trademark renewal is certainly reassuring, but there have been too many Sega rumors as of lately that have left our heads hanging. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best because JGR was definitely a top notch Sega title.

I woudn’t be surprised by the appearance of a Wii title, but I’m not too personally keen on the idea of somewhat arbitrarily attaching motion controls to it.
As long as the visual style stays true to the original (and run at a smooth 60fps!), high-definition isn’t too much a concern. (Not that I wouldn’t mind 1080p…)
That was pretty much the only thing that annoyed me a little about JSRF. I still loved the game but as far as the color palette went it was so much blander than the original.

Comic book ninja and all around badass Corey “The Rey” Lewis did some promotional artwork for a proposed Wii JGR game at some point over the past year or so. he talks about it in this blog post:

I remember thinking when the Wii was announced that Jet Set Radio would be a perfect fit, using the motion control for tagging.
Then I saw what the motion control on the Wii was like. And I thought “No.” Just, “No.”
IF, however, it could make use of the new Motion Plus, the remote would be a lot more accurate, and tagging COULD work really well.

@Neal - Interesting! That last link also noted that Kuju is the developer that proposed the pitch for this JGR Wii title, which could possibly mean that the news we heard about Sega and Kuju teaming up a couple of days ago is in fact for Jet Grind Radio.

I don’t care if it is on the wii if AT LEAST it has the same quality as JSRF
SEGA… what are you waiting for to announce a remake of Panzer Dragoons for the wii?? (with Orta graphics of course) you know.. it’s almost like aiming in House of the Dead and Ghost squad, but better :P
