Alpha Protocol to include James Bond-style love interests, for that real spy experience
Three of the biggest (and best loved) spy themes that people compare Alpha Protocol to are Jack Bauer, Jason Bourne and James Bond. That is because, essentially players are given the option to play the game out like these three spys.
Jack Bauer is the hard ass, in your face type spy. Jason Bourne having brilliant skills and being to kick pretty much everyone’s ass. Lastly James Bond, the smooth talking, playboy, gadget user.
Well it seems like Alpha Protocol will be just that little bit more like a James Bond movie than some of us anticipated. Talking with MTV’s Multiplayer Blog, senior producer Ryan Rucinski spoke about how Michael Thornton will be able to pursue the ladies and how it can affect the outcome of the game.
“It all depends on how you treat them,” Rucinski said. If you have a strong relationship with female characters, they may help with missions. However, he told me that some of them are “batsh*t insane” and can get you into trouble. “One may ask you to assassinate a high-level person,” he added. “Maybe that’s not something you want to do, but she’s really hot. But there are obvious repercussions.”
And in case some of you are wondering, apparently the game does indeed contain sex-scenes, but nothing too graphics, something more along the lines of Mass Effect… just without the sexy, blue aliens.
Rucinski told me it was possible to have sex with all the females, and that the sex scenes were similar to how “Mass Effect” treated its intimate moments. But he was quick to assure me that, “It’s a mature game, it’s not [adults only].”
However, for those of you who do not like the idea of computer generated beings ‘going at it,’ and are worried that the game will turn into a crappy action game with pointless kissing (much like the EA James Bond games) then don’t panic.
Players are free to choose which girls they sleep with, or if they sleep with any at all. There are achievements for players ignoring ladies, and also being a total slut and hooking up with all of them.
And although the women are integral to the story, there’s no need to interact with them beyond missions. Rucinski revealed that the game will have Achievements for being a ladies’ man as well as for being a lone bachelor
Well I’m definitely interested to see just how my luck will turn out with Obsidian’s girls. Can’t be much worse than in real life, can it?

6 opinions for Alpha Protocol to include James Bond-style love interests, for that real spy experience

It just seems lame. Sorry, nobody disputes that I’m an avid Sega fan, but this line of discussion just doesn’t make a good game.
If you’re going to shamelessly rip of James Bond, why not make a sequel to Confidential Mission? That game had solid sales figures and arcade popularity to back it up.

Confidential Mission was a rip from Virtua Cop, but it was a really good rip too.
It’s nice to be detailed about the mechanics of the game, but where’s the juicy stuff?
I don’t have a 360, but yay achievements!

Yes, CF was a copy-cat of Virtua Cop, it was designed by AM3 as AM2 was busy working on Shenmue and Shenmue II.
I think the main reason that we didn’t see a sequal was due to AM3’s merger with Rosso (AM5), and AM2 failing to bring Virtua Cop 3 to consoles… despite all internal and external appearances that they would (since it was using Chichiro Xbox-derived system, it’s still not clear why OutRun 2 was ported, and Virtua Cop 3 wasn’t).
Oh, the lost revenue and game sales…

@Christopher Price.
I’m not sure I entirely follow you.
Alpha Protocol isn’t really ripping off James Bond that much - the game just has the added gameplay elements which involve Michael interacting with female protaganists.
But they don’t even need to be done - apparantly you can completely ignore them if you want.
It’s more just a fun side thought - that could make the game interesting for some.
Personally I welcome the idea. I like games where they have branching paths for missions or story - and the way you act throughout the game will alter the overall experience.
And that is something that fits very well into the whole ’spy scene’.
-I also don’t quite get he point of bringing in Confidential Mission… as that was perhaps more detached from a James Bond film/game than Alpha Protocol is by far.
-The only similarity to James I can see is that you are an agent, wearing a tuxedo.
Got the look down, but the characters and gameplay/story progression wasn’t a homage to Bond or anything - it was just a tongue-in-cheek play on the whole spy genre.
NOTE: I’m not trying to have a go. But I find it odd that you say that AP is a “shamelessly rip of James Bond” - and bring Confidential Mission into the equation.
They are two very different games, from different genres, and different styles - they are just both about agents.
(Am I missing something??)

The game isn’t out yet… so I’m not going to speculate much on who’s ripping off who in unreleased games. There’s no point to doing that.
The makers of Confidential Mission readily admitted to the game being a James Bond-style version of Virtua Cop. That’s not really disputed by the people that make the game.
And, if Sega is going to be backing a game with “James Bond-style”, I would suggest going back to a series that is proven to make money for the company. This is something they haven’t seemed to have gotten right, and keep spawning new titles, sans any sequels.
Sega needs to attach itself to popular series and make sequels to them, or they’re going to be bought out by a company that knows how to do that right. Hopefully Sonic Team is learning this with the rebrand from Sonic Unleashed to Sonic World Adventure.

But how much did Confidential Mission really make Sega - say compared to their other light gun ventures?
Confidential Mission really wasn’t that great a game at all. I’m glad they never made a sequel, it was an ok game - but compared to games like Time Crisis or any Sega lightgun game it wasn’t that great.
I’d bet each individual title in the series’ of Ghost Squad, Virtua Cop and House of the Dead made Sega more than Confidential Mission.
Anyway, Lightgun games don’t exactly seem to be that popular amongst console owners these days.
The only console that they seem to be suitable for is the Wii right now.
Sega could bring out another Confidential Mission for the arcades, and it could do ok. But I doubt it would sell that well on consoles.
Especially not compared to an action RPG like Obsidian are making - which are clearly a more popular choice among gamers these days.
It makes much more sense for Sega to publish a game that is likely to appeal to the market, than a sequel to a semi-popular franchise which most gamers won’t know or care about.
