Kotaku asks Simon Jeffery the generic E3 questions - receives usual answers

Gaming events are great fun aren’t they?

You get to see some videos/screenshots of new games,  hear developers talk about upcoming projects and get to read some interesting interviews… and watch as the world goes crazy, speculating at some mad new inventions and hearing wild rumours.

It’s always the same, and this year was no different - with the typical rumours of Shenmue III, springing up a couple of months ago.  It’s something as gamers we just have to put up with.

But in all honesty I wouldn’t change it for the world!  It gets frustrating, sure, and I’m confident developers hate getting asked the same questions.  But really, it wouldn’t be the same without the rumours or typical questions being asked “Will they? Won’t they?”

It leaves us all guessing just what will happen at the next *insert major exhibition here* right up until the show is over and we all go “Oh… was that it?” - feeling slightly depressed and let down by our favourite companies, even though the chances of the rumours were so slight, we were mugs to believe any of them.

Anyway, in a recent interview with Simon Jeffery, the guys at Kotaku decided to ask Simon some of the same old questions - about Shenmue III, Dreamcast 2, returning to the hardware business and whether Seaman 2 would be making it’s way out of Japan at all?

The short answer (of course) to all these questions is “No.”

Just to point out, the guys at Kotaku aren’t total morons - and the questions were asked with a hint of jest, and it made for quite an interesting interview, I thought.

So watch and enjoy as the Sega of America President makes light of the same old crappy questions he no doubt hears on a weekly basis.

Simion Jeffery is a badass…

Find it to be sorta lame that they asked someone that has NOTHING to do with Shenmue about Shenmue.

G, find AM2 representative in Japan. Learn how to say ‘Is Shenmue III ever going to be made?’ in Japan. Get the answer on tape, bring it back!

I’ll admit, I like Simon Jeffery. He’s about as no-nonsense as they come in the business world. No beating around the bush, although I do wish he’d give us just a slight amount of hope for Shenmue 3… *sniffle*

And Graham…check your Cryptic Allusion PMs!!! The seganerds email no longer works.

!! He says Sega’s the #1 third party developer on the Wii! I guess it is true that Mario & Sonic sold tremendous amounts, but I sure am glad to hear that Sega can still make the top of something these days.

You big tease. Simon Jeffery you big tease.

Just as a note, has the article/comments been messing up for the rest of you? Sometimes I click to read the rest of an article and there’s nothing there. Same deal with the comments.

Seeing Simon Jeffery in these interviews really has impressed me. He seems to have his head on straight, and management was always, always Sega’s weak spot.

At the same time, this particular exchange was truly painful. It shouldn’t be; I certainly don’t expect a Dreamcast 2 or Shenmue 3. But apparently I prefer the ambiguity of “No plans right now” and “We have nothing to announce” to the very direct answers here. :(

I’m am however still holding on to the hope for a new Skies of Arcadia. I think that’s not completely outside the realm of possibility.

@Gamerschoice - That happened to me the other day too. When I clicked on comments, they weren’t there and half the article was missing. But it only happened the once, and I just thought that my Internet was going screwy (which happens all the time now).
…I’ll try and contact the tech chaps.

Simon Jeffery is a pretty cool bloke. I had no idea until recently watching these videos he was a Brit as well. Down to earth kinda guy.

I can see where he’s coming from with the ‘no’s to all those questions (despite that all of us here must have bought Dreamcasts - I actually got two XD - nobody else did :(, making a Dreamcast 2 kinda pointless), but Sega could at least tap into their old IPs and revisit once in a while, couldn’t they?

I hear everyone say “Oh but Sega is crap”. No they’re not, really. Just Sonic Team, and those wretched Sonic games of theirs :P. The rest of Sega? Mostly badass. I want English of the Dead.

Sucks to be a product manager at Sega these days.
No matter what titles you want to promote, reporters and fanboys will end up pestering you with requests for their favorite long lost franchises.
