Sega officially announces Sonic and the Black Knight

Well, one of the biggest shocks in the last week was the surprise announcement of Sonic and the Black Knight.
What with Sega releasing two Sonic games in the next few months - Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Unleashed - I don’t think anyone expected another Sonic game to spin its way onto our consoles.
Sega has now officially announced the game, giving many juicy details in their press release.
“After the success of Sonic and the Secret Rings we’re delighted to announce a second title in the Storybook Series,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe, “Following Sonic on his way to knighthood will excite players of all ages.”
Since the first announcement a couple of days ago, many Sega Nerds have been guessing at what the game would be about - and I think you might be surprised to find out that some of the guesses were actually right. Here’s a few bits of information we now know:
- The game will be a quasi-sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings - keeping to the ’storybook’ theme.
- The game brings Sonic into the world of Arthurian legend - (Legend of King Arthur).
- From the sounds of it Sonic will become a knight - (Sonic and swordplay? *Yelp*).
- It will be exclusively on the Wii.
- The game is due for release Spring 2009.

SEGA ANNOUNCES SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT
A new addition to the Storybook Series of Sonic Titles
SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (July 21, 2008) -SEGA of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced SonicTM and the Black Knight, an all-new Wii-exclusive adventure. Part of the storybook series of games that began with Sonic and the Secret Rings, this new title brings Sonic into the world of Arthurian legend and offers the worlds most infamous blue hedgehog the chance to become a knight. Using the unique Wii control system, this exciting game will take advantage of both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk to offer an interactive experience that any Sonic fans will love.
Created by Sonic Team in Japan, this innovative game takes Sonic into a medieval world and arms him with a sword to aid in his effort to save the day. Sonic and the Black Knight will provide Sonic fans with an irresistible cast of characters and teach them all what it takes to be a true hero and the ultimate knight. With a series of missions taking place in stunning Arthurian-inspired locations, Sonic and the Black Knight promises to offer a fast-paced adventure that gamers of all ages will enjoy.
“After the success of Sonic and the Secret Rings we’re delighted to announce a second title in the Storybook Series,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe, “Following Sonic on his way to knighthood will excite players of all ages.”
Sonic and the Black Knight, exclusively for the Wii, will be out in Spring 2009.
I just hope that the game doesn’t borrow too much from Sonic and the Secret Rings. While the game had some great ideas, I just hated some of the controls - like how you had to (slowly) walk backwards.
Be sure to stay tuned, we’ll post any new information as it comes in!

I’m honestly not too worried about this. It sounds like a neat idea on paper and hopefully it will come out well as a game. I liked Sonic and the Secret Rings (even with some of the wonky control parts.) and I think it is a good thing to explore a new direction for my favorite hedgehog. Sonic seems to be on the upswing and I intend to support him all the way. Hopefully he can redeem his name it the public’s eyes.

I was really hoping for more fairytale related stories with Sonic so will have to buy this. :D
It will be so cool to see which characters from Sonic get different roles from the Camelot series. I can see Dr Robotnik as Merlin. :P

I’m wondering how close to the whole Arthur tales they will go.
Any bets that the ‘Black Knight’ will be Mordred?

I really enjoyed Sonic and the Secret Rings. I tried to go back to it recently, with all the fastest skills equipped… and i couldn’t control!
there’s definitely some serious zen moments in the game where you just need to get in the zone to play.
Although, it was annoying in some of the “side-scrolling” sections, I felt a lot of the game pace slowed down.
If this new one plays like SatSR, I hope they fix all the walking parts.

Random things I noticed:
1) The presser says that SatBN (acronyms make everything better) uses the Nunchuck, so they’ve probably taken out the tilt-steering in SatSR.
2) Apparently the alternate continuity SatSR takes place in is now officially the “Storybook Series.”
3) It doesn’t mention Shahra. There’s still hope!
4) Sonic Team Japan is developing. Is this good or bad?
5) They mention missions. *sigh*
6) They also mention a “cast of characters.” ZOMG BIG THE CAT AS LANCELOT CONFIRMED???
T_T
7) The release date is spring 2009. Spring 2009 also happens to be when Wii MotionPlus, said to enable 1:1 control for, say, sword fighting, is released. Cross your fingers, Sega Nerds.

The only thing that bothers me is that Ilzuka still has an unannounced project then.

wow… hopefully they do get to incorporate the Wii MotionPlus, but somehow I doubt it since the timing is way too close… it would be really neat to see 1:1 motion in the gameplay.
anyway, the initial shock of this TERRIBLE concept has passed, and now I just hope they can pull off a miracle with this thing.

I think since Nintendo has gotten friendly with SEGA, that SEGA already has at least the early version of the Wii Motion Plus. I think this will be one of the early game that will highlight the Wii Motion Plus, hence why it was on the cover of Nintendo Power.

Some new info on it

Bad News: Don’t expect the use of WiiMotion Plus. But the game seems to be a 2D/3D hybrid like Sonic Unleashed is *In terms of Speed stages*
Good news: While other characters are playable, you have the OPTION To play as them
