Rumour: Sega sign a deal with ATI to use DirectX 10.1 in upcoming game?

DirectX

I’m filing this down as a rumour, because I really can’t find much information about this anywhere, but I thought it might interest some of the more technical minded bodies here.

On the Rage3D boards (unofficial ATI community boards) one member, Dave Baumann, (who I believe works for ATI), posted this little slip of information:

“Something that hasn’t been noted yet is that EA and SEGA are signed on with us for DX10.1 titles, we’ve also signed a fairly major deal with Blizzard.”

What does this mean?   Well in all honesty I wouldn’t like to say for certain, as I’m not so clued up on the whole DirectX or graphics cards talk, these days.

One thing it will mean is that Sega is looking to the future, with the (slightly) more advanced abilities this version of DirectX offers developers.  Which is nice.

More wild theories and speculations on this topic, by yours truly, after the break.

I do recall reading somewhere that DirectX 10.1 is currently only compatible with ATI graphics cards, as NVidia has opted not to sign on for it - and is sticking with DirectX 10 for the time being.

Which raises the question, if this is all true, then what system could Sega be making the game(s) for?  Obviously PC springs to mind, but if ATI cards are the only ones compatible with DirectX 10.1 - then perhaps the Xbox 360 could also be on the table?  While the PS3 utilizes a GPU by NVidia.

I dunno, theses are just theories flying around - I’m not even sure if the Xbox 360’s GPU can support DirectX updates.  If anyone does know the full scoop - I’m more than willing to be educated.

Graham, you shouldn’t speculate on things you haven’t the slightest clue about. DirectX is an API for Microsoft platforms, and DirectX 10.1 is only available on Vista SP1. This news has nothing to do with any consoles.

The only DirectX 10 game released by Sega so far is Universe at War (PC version only, obviously).

Alright here’s the link that suggested it was TOTAL WAR but apparently an update has been issued confirming it isn’t TOTAL WAR using Direct x but a yet to be named Sega PC game.

Well Nathan my darling, I did openly say that I didn’t know much about DirectX. Which is why I said they were “wild theories and speculations” and I was happy to be “educated” on the matter. (Though prefer if not in such a hostile manner).

The whole point of the post is that it’s rumoured that Sega might be utilising DirectX 10.1 in some future games.
So it has nothing to do with UAW.

Well it isn’t a rumour really considering the guy from Creative Assembly confirmed a DirectX game is being by sega. I wonder if it could be THE RITUALIST?

The problem with the idea of the Xbox360, is that while it does use a custom designed ATi card, its only DX9.0c compatible if memory serves. Not even a firmware update could bring it up to properly support all features of 10 without a framerate or compatability issue. Consoles are left in the dust on thsi one.

Vista seems to be the platform of choice, but knowing nVidia, theyll opt in for something new, because nVidia always likes kicking ATi in the Teeth for something. Theyve got something up their sleeve.

Also, with Blizzard apart of the deal, i can only imagine its pertinant for the new DiabloIII announcement, theyve been pussyfooting around the subject by providing easter eggs and crap like Runes oh so familiar to the Diablo universe within SC2 promotional shots.
Or it could be WoW2 on the way, or hopefully, an optional graphics overhaul to WoW (thatd be sweet)

The Xbox 360 doesn’t even have AA on half the titles.

If this was a PC game, I can’t imagine why Sega would go to ATI, considering Direct X is Microsoft’s thing. If it was just Sega, then I’d say it’s for a new Arcade board, but considering EA is also in on it, it makes no sense, EA is out for money, and there’s not much money in the Arcades for a U.S. developer. Is it possible the deals are for different things entirely? I can’t imagine what EA wants with ATI, Direct X belongs to Microsoft

I think its just that Sega and EA will have PC games sponsored by ATI.

You know theres AMD ads in Outrun 2, AMD now owns ATI. So i’m sure their going to have something similar to what Nivdia does with the “How its meant to be played” shit.
