Sega and Hasbro set the dance floor alight with their robot moves

by Graham on June 19th, 2008

AMPBot

It’s been a big week of announcements for Sega Toys, this is now the fourth Sega Toys related article in just a few days! And if you thought that my future wife, EMA, was hot then you should check out the moves on this little number.

Recently revealed at the Tokyo Toy Show, the AMPBot (or Automated. Music. Personality Bot) is a new dancing robot.  The two-wheeled wonder can be hooked up to a MP3 player or iPod (holding place on it’s back), and then play the music, while it dances around.

Admittedly the whole concept is not a new one. Sega Toys has made several similar music devices, but none quite as advanced as this one.

Standing at 73cm (2.4 Feet) tall, the robot can bob/nod it’s head and dance to the beat of the music, with flashing LED lights on it’s head.

It has stereo speakers, to hear your pumping tunes, and hands shaped like turntables - which are used for volume control, sound effect and DJ-style scratching.

Not only that, but like EMA, the AMPBot can sense humans too, it seems. Speaking at the Tokyo Toy Show, Osamu Takeuchi of Sega Toys, said;

“(The AMPBot) has a real presence in the home by allowing interaction with the owner. The owner can also enjoy being chased around the house by the robot,

The AMPBot is set to be released first in both Japan and the US, this November. While the rest of the world will have to wait a bit longer - with a worldwide launch planned within the next 18 months.

The bad news though? A Sega spokesperson has said the price in Japan would be around 80,000 yen - about $745! You gotta love your music… and robots a whole lot for that price.

Hopefully we will have more on this when it is shipped.
