Ryu Ga Gotoku movie screening in New York

Takashi Miike’s Ryu Ga Gotoku [Yakuza in the West] movie was released in Japan last year and is now making its way to the United States! This movie will premier for the first time in the United States, thanks to the New York Asian Film Festival. It will be shown on June 23th at the IFC theater and will have a repeat screening again on July 3rd.
For us that don’t live in New York, that means we sadly wait. Though this does confirm that the movie has been translated in English and will posssibly get published on DVD sooner or later. This movie will follow the plot from the first game .

Great! I’ll be sure to buy the DVD… but only because I love Yakuza, not because I like this movie.
I watched a relatively poor fansub of it. Clearly the guy translating never played the game because everyone’s names were completely wrong, which made things confusing. But even without that, the plot was baffling and really gave just about no clue as to what in the world was going on. And I played the game and already knew the story! Still couldn’t understand where they were going in the slightest.
Don’t understand where this went wrong because the prequel videos were wonderful… It does have cool actions scenes if that’s what you’re looking for. ;)

I liked the movie, Majima is great in it, it has a lot of funny moments, only the scenes of the 2 young thieves where wrong but they had to add the two Japanese idols in some way to promote the movie I suppose… I bought the Japanese DVD (lucky region 2 xP) and I hope this movie comes to Europe.

That’s so weird! I just started playing Yakuza tonight (I only recently bought a PS2 and I’ve been busy with getting my degree…cut me some slack). I didn’t realize there was so much…language in it.
I’ll bet this movie receives the same treatment DOA did. I mean that people will say it sucked without actually understanding the movie itself. Hopefully it will be pretty good though.

I hope this is good too. Im yet to play Yakuza. (Only got my PS2 yesterday!) But hoping to pick it up today.
@Gamerschoice - Dead or Alive? Well that was hardly a great movie either. It was watchable though.
-Best Game-Movie I have ever seen so far, imo, is the first Mortal Kombat movie.
I think that managed to pull off the game idea, and make a half decent movie plot out of it (plus the fights were actually good)

It was good but then it slowly just ended up into a pile of waste material towards the end, just couldn’t piece the plot together in the final scene. Regardless, some good action scenes in there.

Mmm…Unfortunately on the offical site they wrote “110 minutes, 35mm, in Japanese with English subtitles”

As a fan I enjoyed the movie, but I also think a person who hasn’t played the game can enjoy it… if he is a Miike fan lol

The movie is awful and laughable. It has a poor structure, the plot barely points to Nishiki and has some really ridiculous scenes (baseball guy anyone?). It’s an insult to the game.

@Graham, I meant that I enjoyed the movie for what it was without comparing it to anything. Sure, it wasn’t a great movie, but there were some things I liked about it. For example, the dude who played Zach was perfect for the role. Mortal Kombat was pretty good from what I remember too. I guess game movies have a special place in my heart. I even made sure that I imported Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life on HD DVD from Germany (over $60!), Resident Evil trilogy from Germany (again, HD DVD), and I won Doom also on HD DVD. What can I say? I’m just that kind of guy who can dig a game movie so long as it’s not from Uwe Boll.
