DUX

A brand new Dreamcast title is coming our way, and if like me, you can’t read the font too well on the image above, the game’s name is DUX (I had to double check).

The game is being developed by a new team, HUCAST, which is made up of former members from NG: Dev Team, creators of Last Hope. Like a fair few Dreamcast games, since Sega went 3rd party, this is going to be a scrolling shooter.

Yeah, I know, you guys are probably sick of hearing about shooting games for the Dreamcast by now. But I’m just happy to hear about new software still being made on a professional level for the system. Plus the title is actually looking very good!

More details (including video) after the break.

The above video is an early showing of the 2nd stage, and I think the game is looking pretty damn sexy. Unfortunately the transition to YouTube has meant a reduction in video quality - you can download this (and other) videos from the official site, with much better quality.

Right now there isn’t much in the way of screen shots, apart from early development screens and videos. However the official site does contain concept art and information for enemies and bosses.

(Note: Information taken directly from official site - so please excuse any grammar errors, it’s not us!)

Title: DUX
System: Dreamcast
Release: July 2008
Developer: HUCAST.net & KonTechs Ltd.
Publishing: Self-publishing

DUX will also runs region free on every DC build before 2001 which are the very most of DCs ever build. The game will come in a DVD case instead of a Jewelcase.

As shown DUX will completely consist out of CGI to use the advantages of Dreamcasts 2D capabilities. So the game features high-resolution to allow some super smooth graphics in 60fps. Also notices, the game is still in development but the screens present the games overal look pretty well. The final results will look much better.

As the screens also hopefully show, this is going to be memorizing shooting. So it will be necessarily to memorize some parts of the game here and there, but there’s still a focus on action. When you never have heard about memorizing in shooters then you probably never heard of R-Type. Yet DUX won’t be just a clone of mentioned classic, but rather a modern and standalone game inspiried by the games within the same subgenre. By saying modern I mean this memorizer will take the advantages of recent shooting games to combine it with an undying gaming concept. Accessibility, highly-visible bullets and a lot of those simultanesly on screen, are one of the advantages - just to name a few of them.

Three of the 6 bosses:

DUX Bosses

Stage 1 Boss

Krebs is the first stage boss to encounter. This boss has some sort of nippers opening and closing during the fight, so take care of that. Naturally, the boss will spit some bullets at you including a strong beam and some snake-like moving yellow shots. The beam is coming ot of the boss enemies hitzone and should be avoided as it will penetrate your shield. The yellow shot instead, which is also shown in the stage 1 teaser video, is to be absorbed with the pod. You can also point those yellow shots into a certain direction to make them easier for dodging.

Stage 2 Boss

Blumas is a huge mechanic flower. It will tossing dozens of bullet at you at a time to be doged. Those flower shaped bullets can be really dangerous, especially when they have enough time to explode to spit out even more bullets.

Stage 5 Boss

Radiax is an mutated creature living in a radio active contaminated den. Those little tentacle will shoot some shot some bullet at you, so eliminate them. When fighting against this boss enemy you will also take care of a long snake, which trying to get in touch with you.

In the final, all these boss enemies will have more attacks than described here.

So far, I’m not sure if there is any real back story to the game, or if it’s just a case of you flying through levels, killing enemies randomly, (which is the impression I get with a lot of shooters these days).

But I think the game is shaping up rather well, and hope it makes the July release date ok.

For full information and updates on the game, plus how to pre-order the game, visit the official DUX site now.

I’d also like to briefly introduce the development team of DUX….

We will be better of reading all that on their blog.

“Like pretty much all Dreamcast titles since 2002, this is going to be a scrolling shooter.”

This statement is 100% incorrect.

Till 2004 Dreamcast top sellers were SNK’s King Of Fighter.

The first independet Dreamcast game released in 2003 was Feet Of Fury a critical success but a commerical failure. The game made history but hasn’t even sold 5000 pieces to date.

What about the puzzle games released by Goat Store Maqupai (2004), Inhabitants (2005), Cool Herders (2006).

Then we have less then 4 dating Sims from Japan a year.

Then we have less then 2 shooters a year from Japan.

The only reason why everyone thinks shooters are the only games released for Dreamcast is because they sell, there is a strong cult following for shooters who buy them the second they hit stores, when a shooter is released for Dreamcast it makes it on to Japan top 20.

They are like Sammy’s Pachinko’s to some they seem shit, yet they money.

So basically shooters are probably the most popular product on Dreamcast since 2004, however they are not the only genre of games available.

Ok Cube - I did realise that it’s not just shooting games - but I was generalising for everyone.
I’ll change the phrasing. (Doh too many errors on one article!)

I have noticed that you haven’t filed this under Dreamcast, infact I have no idea where you have filed this?
