Rare Sega consoles: CDX on eBay

by Graham on June 12th, 2008

Sega CDX

Here’s something for you’re console collection, the Sega CDX.

For those that don’t know, the CDX was a combination of the Megadrive and MegaCD, and also known as the Multi-Mega outside of the US.

Of course, due to some ridiculous over pricing of $399.99, the lack of (new) games, the fact the separate MegaCD had been available for a year or two - for a cheaper price - and the upcoming Saturn, the release of the CDX in 1993 meant that the system did not sell, and so has become quite the collectors item.

The system is currently up on eBay, with the highest bid (at the time of writing) of $190. The lot comes with 5 games; Sonic CD, Lunar Silver Star, The Terminator, Ecco the Dolphin, Sega Classics 5-in-1. Plus an official carry case, original 6-button controller, cables, manual and box.

So anyone who really wants an all-in-one MegaCD and Megadrive, might want to check this out. Though it will probably be cheaper buying the two platforms separately.

CDX + Lunar AND Sonic CD? Good lord.

Wasn’t the original cost after all the sales and such (right before it was pulled from the market) still somewhere north of $200? This is a major steal at this price… even at $300 it’d still be a deal (for the condition that it’s in).

Now, if only I had $300 to burn…

I own one of these, was lucky enough to find one at a car boot sale for about seven pounds. Sadly the CD motor won’t spin my discs anymore but it’s still the smallest console I own and a real beauty.

I had one of these a while back, but now it’s gone. I’d love to buy this little bundle for my SEGA collection, but I am broke, sadly. Zuh. Wait for me, CDX. Wait for me!

G, you know better than this…

In 1993 there were tonnes of new games being released. 1992/1993 were the prime years of the console. It was supported by the industry until 1998, the 10 year life span good consoles usually have. No one gave a shite about the Saturn release.

I would certainly like to have one now. These would be great for those built-in games packages.

Man I wish I had the money but sadly the only extra I have is being used to get some sonic merchandise.

@Kogen - yeah you are probably right.
I don’t think I was thinking straight… but I got it into my head that around that time the Megadrive was drying up and bugger all Mega CD were being made.
But I know that’s false - because I got my Megadrive in 1993 myself - and I got tons of new games….

Im going to have to edit that - cheers.

This is awesome. And at the time, $399 was a little high, but not too bad considering you were getting a game console and a portable CD player in one. I still want a CDX, but I have school to pay for.
