Sega nominated for Develop Awards

by George on June 8th, 2008

2296_develop_award_photo.jpgDevelop Awards are handed out to the best UK based developers and publishers. Sega had a bunch of UK talent this year, so being nominated for awards was expected. Sega Nerds fan favorite developer, Sumo Digital is nominated for two awards! Both are for Sega Superstar Tennis, “Best use of License” and “Audio Accomplishment.” Audio accomplishment has some stiff competiton with Grand Theft Audio 4, Heavenly Sword, and Singstar (what?!).

Creative Assembly get nominated for “Best New IP” for the game Viking: Battle for Asgard. Sega themselves are nominated for the publishing “Hero Award.” The competition happens to be Nintendo, Lucasarts, Codemasters, Gamecock and 1C & 505 Games. Also for all ten of you that picked up Crush, the developer Zoë Mode has been nominated for “Business Developer.”

The winners should be announced tonight, make sure to check back and find out the winners.

[Update: Bit of a mix up there. The awards ceremony will be held on 30th July, in Brighton (UK), and the winners will be announced on the night. Best not to hold your breath for Sega to win… because you’ll be holding it for a month and any medical expert will tell you that’s impossible. So, July 30th/31st we should have the results for you]

SEGA should become nominated for all awards!
, they’ve really done well since the beginning of this gen, I hope to see them as world #1 biggest game company again…perhaps with Shenmue 3, Shinobi Next Gen and Street Of Rage 4+Jet Set Radio 2 they can achieve this goal…perhaps another Sonic & Mario game(A fighting game)
and another Super Stars (again a fighting one)
    can really help.

    Regards, Alimn

Mario & Sonic fighting game that’s also known as Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Sega Superstars fighting game that’s also known as Fighter’s Megamix.

What we really need is another Mario&Sonic or Sega Superstars game that is a minigame based game so that SEGA can rake in some more cash that way.

It’s about time Sega gets some positive recognition. Sometimes I wish I could be in the UK game scene because Sega is looked upon more highly over there. But, I dig my area of the US, so I think I’ll stay here for a while.

Are SONY the sponsors of this contest again and just gonna give themselves all the big rewards?

Wait, how does using licensed tracks for a karaoke game class as a “Audio Accomplishment”? If anything Superstar Tennis and GTAIV rely a lot on previously produced music, so the nominations make very little sense. Still, go Sega!

If anything Sega Superstar Tennis is the only one which even deserves that music award.

Yeah the music in the game is from old games - but they have been remastered, and the songs were original for the respective games they were originally on.

GTAIV and Singstar both use published songs by published artists.
Unless they include GTAIVs DJ ramblings and adverts as Audio accomplishment?

Quick thing to note, SEGA won the publisher hero award last year and no one manages to retain two years in a row, so if SEGA manages that it’ll be a first, but I doubt it.
