IGN re-writes Sonic history

Shadow being great

We can all make mistakes, and as a result we try not to berate fellow journalists, or game sites here too much on Sega Nerds, unless we feel they really need to have a good kick up the arse, or maybe a little educating. And in this case perhaps both need to be applied.

While one, keen-eyed, Sega Nerd was browsing IGN, looking at the old Sonic Adventure 2 review, he clicked on the character biography link for Shadow the Hedgehog (let’s call that a moment of madness on his part).

Amongst the small blurb about who Shadow is, and what role he plays within the game, IGN has some ‘Quotes’ from the character and small pieces of ‘Trivia.’

“Trivia: Shadow the Hedgehog was supposedly supposed to be Sega’s original mascot, however, they scrapped him in favor of Sonic, it was not until the release of Sonic Adventure that they reached back into their files to pull out Shadow as Sonic’s nemesis for Sonic Adventure 2″

What?! Shadow the Hedgehog was supposed to be Sega’s original mascot?

We aren’t sure quite where they got that piece of information, (one member suggests out of their ass) but I’m pretty sure anyone at this site could tell you that it is quite false.

While I’m sure many IGN readers, and even Sega fans won’t ever care enough to look at Shadows biography page, there is still a large number of crazed Shadow fans out there, and the last thing we need is them spouting off how “Shadow was meant to be Sega’s number one. Sonic sucks!

Hopefully someone at IGN is reading this and will change it, and maybe double-check their ‘facts’ before posting them up. Click here, if you really want to read IGN’s versioon of Shadows biography.

This is why I don’t trust IGN anymore and use them purely as a video and screenshot dump.

Nnnnnah, I wrote a Sonic the Hedgehog retrospective for 1UP some few years ago, which involved me talking to Sega’s higher-ups about the creation of the character. It’s true some other animals were considered (bunny, squirrel), but there was no mention of an emo hedgehog.

Also remember, a pitdog, a fat man (Who later became Robotnik/Eggman, no wonder he hates Sonic so much) and Mighty (From Knuckles Choatix) was also in consideration.

Fucking LOL!!

Amazing. That was purely amazing. Well done IGN. You did your homework *gold star in your notebook*

Of course a quality website like IGN also knows other SEGA facts that we don’t. Did you know that “Alex the Kid” is in Sega Superstars Tennis?

Hahaha, absolute idiots. Though I’m pretty sure that is just some guy who posted it on to see what would happen, or to fool people or something. Either way, the actual fans will know it’s not true at all.

They obviously want to please the retarded fans Shadow has, just like Sega.

I have nothing against Shadow (I actually like him, though I just pretend his awesome death in SA2 stayed an awesome DEATH), but this is complete bull. Well done, IGN. Give me another reason to hate your guts.

“Ristar was meant to be Sega’s number one. Shadow sucks!”

^I mean, seriously…who cares?
…How they can say if Ristar
or Shadow or what ever…
could make an appearence before Sonic, that character could or could not become SEGA’s #1 instead of Sonic.

So, it is not important if Shadow
was ready to be the main character
of Sonic Team’s first Sonic Title
or not.

Anyway, I love Shadow too
but Sonic is the bigger one for me.

Regards, Alimn

I didn’t realize anyone liked Shadow until some dork at the local LAN place started raving about him and I laughed and was like “you’re kidding right?” Turns out he wasn’t. I died a little inside.

The majority of Shadow’s fans are kids whose first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2 for Gamecube…

That type also finds the original Sonic games boring. Not all of them, of course, but I have come in contact with quite a number. Guess it’s too little drama for the new recruits of the current generation. Who can blame them? It seems every high rated game these days comes with its own would-be badass toating a gun and using cliche oneliners.

Personally, I find it all shallow and boring.

Looks like the idiot who wrote that has been playing Sonic 1 MegaMix for a long time XP, good thing he didn’t mention Mighty because he was supposed to be Sega’s mascot.
Well waddya expect from IGN readers X/.

Well, he’s not going to stop being hated, anytime soon. What, with him (along with Omega and Shade) being playable in Sonic Chronicles. Maybe they’ll get over it, one day.

I stopped reading IGN a while ago. They have no idea what they’re talking about. I also recently dropped EGM because they don’t know what they’re doing either.
They said that Shadow didn’t have a chance to be in a game until SA2?? What about Sonic 2? They could have dropped Tails! Or maybe S3&K? It could have been S3&S! This is so dumb. IGN sucks out loud. I can’t believe their readership hasn’t gone down more.

Wow. Flaming a good reviewing site because of one mistake. That’s just… fanboyish.

1UP > IGN > GameSpot (Please don’t tell me you like GameSpot.)

CaptainUlt

Posted June 8th, 2008 at 6:17 pm.

I find that my opinions are usually more in line with IGN than any other reviewer. Gamespot is not a review site as far as I’m concerned, and 1UP/EGM reviewers are too harsh. Then again, I’m getting extremely sick of reviewers throwing out 10/10s like they’re candy just because they’re stupid, hype-fueling fanboys.

Anyway….. Everyone knows Sonic was blue because of the Sega logo.

Okay, here’s my opinon:

1UP > IGN > GoNintendo > GameSpy > VC-Reviews > Electronic Gaming Monthly > Nintendo Power > GameSpot

CaptainUlt

How about this:

1up = IGN = EGM = GameSpot = etc.

They all equally suck. *shot*

@ CaptainUlt

“Wow. Flaming a good reviewing site because of one mistake. That’s just… fanboyish.”

-We do try not to sound like fanboys - and we know sites/people can make mistakes.
But I think everyone should be able to expect a certain amount of accuracy, especially from the bigger sites.
-And especially as it’s such an obvious mistake!
