New mini-Megadrive on the scene?

ATGames’ Mini-Megadrive

While doing my usual browsing of the Internet for games, porn and music, I came across something I found quite interesting. On PlayAsia, I found a new mini-Megadrive, the “Sega Mega Drive Twin Pad Player.”

Now over the past couple of years we have seen several handheld and mini-Megadrive devices being released. All of the devices have a set amount of built-in games for people to play with. The concept has always been quite cool, as many gamers like to go back and experience some of the 16-bit glory days.

However, the reality has always been flawed greatly. Quite often most people will only like, (or even know of), maybe 4 or 5 of the built in games. Or the device will only have maybe 3 titles built-in, and won’t seem worth the price.

While this new mini-Megadrive still has some 20-odd built-in titles, it has one great feature, which none of the other companies seems to have ever thought of…

It allows you to insert and play original Megadrive (Genesis) games.

Genius! Well not quite. But major kudos for ATGames to actually use their brains and add this feature.

The Sega Mega Drive Twin Pad Player, is not yet available, but is set for release this July, for $39.90. Hopefully we might be able to get hold of this once it’s released and let you all know about it.

Now the full details and features the device has to offer.

List of built-in games:

Alien Storm
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Altered Beast
Arrow Flash
Columns III
Crack Down
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
Ecco
Ecco Jr.
ESWAT: City Under Siege
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Jewel Master
Kid Chameleon
Shadow Dancer
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic Spinball

They should come out with a mini-Dreamcast!

It’s interesting how SEGA has kept their older systems alive by licensing the rights to their hardware and games. Like with Tec Toys and that Mega Drive controller with games built into it for instance. The Master System and Mega Drive are still staying around after all these years.

Mega Drive is still very strong in Latin America. It’s no coincidence that TecToy is a brazilian company.

Lol, in latin america a kid says to all his friends “Guys, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 just came out! There’s a new character called Tails, and you can play with two people!”

Sorry to sound stupid, but that’s what I pictured when you said that.

Anyways, that’s awesome! Now will they bring it to the US?

Nice. I might need one of these bad boys as my original Genesis reads the cartridges maybe one out of every four attempts…

But will this thing run Virtua Racing? Better yet, am I the only one who would actually play that port?

Hey TRAViS, I LOVE playing Virtua Racing in my MegaDrive. Have you tried showing it to your friends? They’ll be all like “WOHA!! That thing does 3D?”

lol I too enjoy a good session of Virtua Racing on my Megadrive :)
Though the Saturn version is my favourite (more tracks and different vehicles to choose from)

And I believe it will run Virtua Racing - the VR cart had an extra chip inside, which allowed it to do the 3D graphics. Or so I am told.

The Sonic game they choose is Sonic and Knuckles? That is the worse “stand alone” Sonic platformer on the system(ignoring a certain pile of shite everyone knows about).

I still hate these things, I have a similar one and the sound is fucking horrible. I bet this will be too as no one ever gets it right. A real Megadrive is also cheaper than this.

Clever, but I’ll stick to playing them on my PSP. I don’t think I’ll ever sell my PSP, it’s fan-fucking-tastic.

PSP is a really really bad way of playing genesis. The blurry screen, slowdowns, rom compatibility, singleplayer only.. Playing the real thing just blows away every other way of playing it ;)

Just about every game I’ve thrown at DGEN works perfectly, one or two with slight slowdown or small frame problems. I genuinely would have no one interested enough to play Mega Drive with me if I had one. Anyway, playing it on the ‘blurry’ (that’s a bit… ill informed) screen of the PSP beats playing it super strected across a 1366 x 766 TV through a wimpy composite connection.

There are other devices that allow you to insert Genesis carts. I can’t remember its name, but I know it had the letter X in it, and you could play NES and Genesis games on it. It sells online for about $40 (I think). This one is pretty cool though because it has the 20 games built into it. I’m just waiting for someone to put an SNES and Genesis together so I can buy THAT.

Come to think of it, it may have been called GenX.
