SGD08: The Incredible Hulk hands on

by George on May 16th, 2008

Sega had a Hulk booth, and I didn’t even notice it. It was the last thing I saw at the event. There was a constant group of people playing it in a little huddle, laughing when they threw cars at people.Let me start off by saying that I never played Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Licensed games aren’t really my thing! But I have heard people talk about Hulk:UD, so I sorta know how it plays and whatnot.

The game was set in Manhattan. The first thing I did was go up to a car and punch it. That felt good, so I decided to go up and punch a building and it made a huge dent in it. Next I decided to try and jump on it. Representatives at Sega told me that B was to grab, and holding the button down makes Hulk climb all the way to the top.

If you jump while climbing you do a leap in the opposite direction. That was rather interesting. So I was playing around with climbing and jumping, and I found it really fun for some reason.

The PR guy then asked me if I had destroyed a building. I told him I punched one and he said you can destroy any building in the game. Empire State Building, Avengers Base, you name it! So I started punching it again and he told me there is a special attack Hulk can do that will destroy everything in his radius. Once performed, two buildings came crashing down.

They said that the game has been in development for 18 months. I actually thought it was a lot shorter, but apparently that is not the case. I just thought I’d let everyone know. Every time a movie game is bad people blame development time.

Hulk can also wear gloves in the game, kind of. I went up and grabbed a car, and when I did this Hulk tore the car in half and used it as gloves, taking a move straight from Ultimate Destruction. You obviously do more damage with them on. After I put the car gloves on I tried to climb a building, but discovered I couldn’t. That made me mad. But don’t worry, I didn’t turn green.

I asked him if the game was only based on the movies, and he said no. They added some comic book missions and villains in the game, but he wouldn’t go into specifics. He also said there are more locations than just Manhattan. He said somewhere based on the movie obviously. One location mentioned was Africa. A jungle level? Sounds interesting.

The controls were tight in the game (I tried out the Xbox 360 version). They responded just fine. Nothing felt lose or wobbly. I felt that they had the controls around the right spot.

The graphics were all right. It looked better in motion than the screenshots we’ve seen previously, but not by miles. The textures on the ground and other objects were low. I seriously didn’t care when I was playing though; I was too busy destroying the ugly textures!

Conclusion:

Sure, I didn’t play any missions. I actually had fun just being the Hulk and running around the city destroying buildings. This game was way better than Iron Man even in the short time I had with it. I think that destroying buildings is a very fun way to waste some time.

I wasn’t interested at all in this game, but after a few minutes of playing it, that changed. I think this game was rather good. The best licensed game from Sega in a while… A long while. I can’t wait for this game to hit retail so I can give you guys a full review.

Sounds good! I’ll have to give it a shot, as I missed my chance with UD.

UD is Backwards Compatible on the XBOX 360. I played it all the way though on the 360, and you should be able to get it cheap.

Wow, good to hear they didn’t screw this one up. My bro loved UD. I’ll be getting him (and myself) this one.
