SGD08: Our arrival

When we walked in there was a person at this checkout thing. He was wearing a suit and looked all snazzy. He showed us to the elevator and told us to take it to the 6th floor, where the event was being held. We got there and stood in line to sign the embargo. They told us to pick the color of our wrist band; I wanted pink, but they said that we couldn’t get that color and it was reserved. I guess they put it on the table to cocktease us, so we got orange.

Once everyone got into the room for the event, they had drinks and coffee set up for us. They later told us to sit down since there was going to be a speech. It was suppose to start at 9 a.m., but people still kept on coming in way past 9.

The person that gave the speech is the new vice president of marketing, Sean Ratcliffe. He talked about the successes they have had. If you have visited this site, you would know that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has sold truckloads. He touched on that, and also mentioned that Iron Man was selling well. This made some of the people there chuckle. Last time I checked it was doing decently.

He then turned his attention to the screen and said he was going to give us a little taste of what Sega has for us in the future.

One of the games he showed was a teaser trailer for Alpha Protocol. The game opened up showing past games that Obsidian Entertainment has developed, including Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2. Then in came the footage. Though they made the footage quick five-second clips, it looked rather good. There was a scene where you are talking to a girl and the characters sorta looked plastic, but it might be early models. It wasn’t even playable, so it’s still too early to tell.

They also showed a trailer of Beijing 2008. It had a bunch of Olympic stars and it tried to be really inspiring. It was mostly historic footage from races and stuff that has happened in past Olympic Games. They showed some gameplay footage. Had some shot putting and whatnot. I’ll let you all in a little secret: I hate the Olympics.

One of the most comical parts of the video was a sort of TV spot for Samba de Amigo. It showed a bored family playing a board game. I can relate, because board games are boring and made for homeless people who can’t afford video games. They get a knock at the door, so they go and open it. Boom, there’s a monkey with maracas in his hands. He walks in and the family starts to play Samba de Amigo on the Wii. They obviously look very thrilled. It was cheesy, but it reminded me of old Sega ads from the ’90s. Sure, the ad was sorta like the “Wii would like to play” ads from Nintendo, but 10 times better since monkeys rock. On a scale from 1 to 10, monkeys rank in at 11. Let’s hope the ad gets a TV run!

We then got an Aliens: Colonial Marines teaser. I don’t think it was in-game footage, but it was hard to tell. It was just a alien coming out of an egg and a marine getting close. Then the alien jumps and the screen turns black with the game’s logo. I really wanted to see this game being played or play it myself. Too bad.

After the video came to a close, they told us who we had to follow. They separated everyone by wristband color.

The first room that they sent orange to was Valkyria Chronicles
